you know, i could actually sympathize with leno a bit during the whole letterman fiasco, as he'd been the guest host for years and was well within his rights to make a play for the job permanently (forget carson's wishes, no one consulted with jack paar when carson was chosen as his replacement), and dave was already dominating the 12:30 time slot
i also have a bit of sympathy for his feeling that he was pushed out the door
but i don't have any sympathy for his behavior afterwards, it's been pure passive-aggressive sabotage on his part
he should have let it go, or accepted one of nbc's other offers (i recall reading one of the offers was a two-hour sunday evening show, which would have been perfect for his style and audience)
they clearly feel leno is worth more to them, and nbc has a history of bending over backwards for their late-night kings (jack paar was given carte blanche in choosing a prime time show to transition to in 1962, carson got a day off and had a half-hour cut from the tonight show as part of settlement in a 1980 contract dispute, and we've all cringed at what they did for leno)
conan's already gone at this point, but he'll get a truckload of cash out of it
