Just do something else. Why would you want to go from the top to scrounging for table scraps at Fox or being ousted out of the realm of public display altogether (cable)?

Hang it up. Go write some Simpsons episodes or something.

Why should he hang it up?  This is what he loves doing, this is what he's been doing for nearly 20 years, and the timeslot and show is something he's earned.  I personally don't mind him going to Fox, it has no affect on me, I just want to watch his fucking show.

He's definitely not going to hang it up. He enjoys doing the work. It's just likely he will be doing it on another network like Fox.

The Fox thing ain't happening anytime soon, if ever. Can anyone even figure out the logistics of putting him on Fox? It'd be a total nightmare. ABC doesn't want him, and CBS would have to dump Craig Ferguson (and Conan would have to go against his old show).

I just don't see that happening. If he goes to Fox, it could be years and by that time, he'll get crushed by Leno and Letterman. He won't last long at all.

His only other viable alternative is to go to cable, which is just pathetic considering where he'd be coming from. It'd be like being a pro athlete and getting demoted to the minor leagues. That's just lame.

Hang it up.

Huh? I'm not rooting against him, I'm just being a realist with his options. If you guys want to see him on Fox two years from now, after it finishes wrangling all their affiliates in (and probably not ALL of them) only to see him trounced by Leno and Letterman - fine by me. I say let the guy go out with some dignity.

He's not going out with any dignity here, just humiliation.  NBC is basically telling him "fuck you," and as you've pointed out, he doesn't have a lot of great options.

best possible news: if Jay takes the high road and just leaves.

He's not being humiliated. He's being given the shaft and been a class act about it. That's not lost on the public. If he exists The Tonight Show, he exits with his creative integrity intact - which is not something most folks in Los Angeles can say.

you know, i could actually sympathize with leno a bit during the whole letterman fiasco, as he'd been the guest host for years and was well within his rights to make a play for the job permanently (forget carson's wishes, no one consulted with jack paar when carson was chosen as his replacement), and dave was already dominating the 12:30 time slot

i also have a bit of sympathy for his feeling that he was pushed out the door

but i don't have any sympathy for his behavior afterwards, it's been pure passive-aggressive sabotage on his part

he should have let it go, or accepted one of nbc's other offers (i recall reading one of the offers was a two-hour sunday evening show, which would have been perfect for his style and audience)

they clearly feel leno is worth more to them, and nbc has a history of bending over backwards for their late-night kings (jack paar was given carte blanche in choosing a prime time show to transition to in 1962, carson got a day off and had a half-hour cut from the tonight show as part of settlement in a 1980 contract dispute, and we've all cringed at what they did for leno)

conan's already gone at this point, but he'll get a truckload of cash out of it

"They were not thrilled. They told him it would undercut his negotiating leverage," one source revealed to me. "But Conan wouldn't listen to them. He wanted to make it." When Conan read the statement to the staff, "he broke up. He began to cry," one of my insiders reveals. "Because for 17 years he was working towards The Tonight Show, and now he says he's prepared to walk away from it. That's an amazing thing. An amazing thing. But he takes very seriously the fact that The Tonight Show baton was passed to him."

First Conan O'Brien Leaves, Now Jay Leno?

Sources close to former 'Tonight Show' host Jay Leno tell me he is furious with the way NBC has treated him and Conan O'Brien and is considering walking away from the entire mess with his head held high. "Now that Conan has made it clear he is leaving the troubled network, Jay is considering doing the same. They have put Jay in a terrible position. It looks like he is the reason that Conan is now without a job. Jay is a great guy and it's not fair that due to NBC's stupidity he looks like the bad guy," a TV insider tells me.

"Plus, what happens when Jay does return to the 11:35 slot if his audience doesn't immediately follow? How can he possibly trust the same network that canceled Conan after only seven months?"

This would be HILARIOUS.

Have Jay Leno go on the Science/Discovery/or History channel or whatever with a show about cars.

Have Conan do a skit show with no BS interviewing on Comedy Central.

And I will be happy.

I'm loving the internet rage at all this.

Leno show gets canceled even though his ratings were good & expected from the network. Is reduced from an hour to a half hour AND moved back from primetime to 11:35.
While Conan gets pushed back only half an hour & gets Leno as his direct lead-in to help his massive sagging ratings & he is the one screwed out of this situation?

I'll say it here since this is becoming the official thread, but Conan is the douche bag for putting Leno in the current situation.
Now Leno has to either accept the position of Tonight Show host & look like an opportunist, taking advantage of Conan leaving or decline & endanger his entire show & career.

Fucking dick move.
