To be fair, we haven't really seen a lot of Android/Tegra 2 netbooks, but I like what I've seen from the tablets.

And Jinfash, I still think the iPhone is ridiculous and overpriced, especially since there are a slew of legitimate contenders in the market. The only thing Apple has going for it is The App Store, which is still too closed for my preference and will no longer be the only game in town within a year or two.

also, i doubt many (if any) of these other tablets will be under $500, unless they have extremely weak smartphone guts inside

even the crunchpad, which was supposed to come out for $200, is launching for $500 - and that's a web-only device

Eh, most of the manufacturers were waiting for Apple to set the price point, but Engadget said the Adam (Android/Tegra 2) could debut as low as $300. And again, the Tegra 2/ARM innards were playing 1080p video. There were a dozen or so of them at CES.

They also allow for multitasking, Android is open source, many will be GSM ready, etc.

I'm a bit surprised at the amount of people who are ready to jump on some day one kinda business. How long did it take for Apple to make the first gen iphone useless? Isn't that some rule in the apple fanboy rulebook; never buy testbed bullshit first iterations ?

well, you can always wait on anything and the next iteration will almost always be a little better

...and plenty of people have been using their iPhone for years thinking 'this is awesome but i'd like the screen to be just a bit bigger...' like 10x a day. There is pent-up demand for this thing for sure

derp derp obviously, but in this case it feels like they deliberately left shit out because they didn't bother making it work properly, spend too much money on R&D and have easy go-to features to add in later iterations. No camera, 10 hour battery life, no multi-task? ffs...  :duh

I doubt that MSI, Asus, Notion Ink, Compal, Quanta, HTC, etc. are going to be undercut by Apple. And if they are, it won't be by much. The word from the CES floor was that most of the devices would be in the $300 - $700 range (with $700 being the ceiling) and that the manufacturers were waiting for iPad pricing before making definitive pricing plans. I really doubt that companies were sitting on the pricing because they thought they'd be more expensive than Apple.

we'll see, but that sounds like the sort of smoke being blown last year about all those $250 ION netbooks that were supposed to come out

i just don't think a 10" capacitive touchscreen tablet running Windows 7 with high specs is gonna hit for less than $500

if it does and is better, fine, i can always dump the iPad for close to what i paid and call it a rental fee

This thing could really kill the Kindle,Nook, and Reader market. $4.99-$14.99 for most books with a full color and back-lit screen. It's $200 more than a Kindle, but it's like comparing a launch GameBoy to a PSP. As long as they can get the content in iBooks, it'll do for eBooks what iTunes/iPod did for music.

I know people who want to buy a eBook reader, but the lack of a back light kills it. This solves that.

Yeah. 1st gen or not. If they had charged $1,000 as was rumored, they'd definitely have fallen into the trap of not being as useful as a notebook. But for a luxury Apple product, $500 isn't that much to get your feet wet. There were iPods that cost almost that much.

So my buddy from Nvidia has a prototype of a Tegra2 tablet in the office which is running Unreal Engine 3 stuff. iPad will definitely have some stiff competition.

Also, over lunch, we dreamed up some fun uses for the iPad. Imagine playing tabletop D&D with animated pieces on the tablet, while players did all their dice rolls and inventory stuff etc on an iPhone app. That could really liven up a night at the pub!

As much as they hype their own products, Apple rarely predicts what really end up being the killer apps for their products. They didn't guess that podcasts would be a huge source of free content for their iPods, they tried to stop developers from making apps for the iphone...and they really didn't show off anything innovative in the way of hardware, software or content for the iPad either.

Nevertheless, because it will sell shitloads, all that good stuff will probably come to it anyway.

yeah, i was just fishing there, borys. you never know your luck.

I think the entire world feels they have to have an opinion on the iPad today, because even if they don't buy into the hype, they feel they have to prove that they HAVEN'T. Whether they even have any kind of legitimate interest in it as a product in the first place. It's like Ferrari unveiling a new model and the entire internet chiming in. "It only has two seats lol!", "i'll stick to my Civic with it's awesome MPG" etc

Obviously the price tags don't compare but just because you heard about it doesn't mean it's for you, you know?

Is it true that the 3G models price is to cover the plan as well? I saw someone mention that the reason it's expensive is because, like the Kindle, it is online access without a data plan.  If it really is $150 extra for 3G internet on the device without needing to pay an additional fee to AT&T or something, that would be pretty cool.

With the burden existing iPhone users put on AT&Ts network while putting $100 a month into it, I really doubt AT&T is going to let iPad users do whatever they want for a one-shot $130 premium.

I don't think the regular models have a sim card slot at all, do they? You're paying to have the capability, then it's $15/mo for 250MB or $30 for 5GB.

This thing would rock my world. I could do all my reading on it and just let i use one of the laptops as a media server. I'd love to have one as a digital media device. There was a big piece on the Korean news about how many of the parts are of Korean design or sourcing. Which is hilarious given that they were doing everything in their power to block the iPhone for years and years.

And for the 3G models, the $30 is for the unlimited plan, not 5GB (right?).

I've grown incredibly cynical of the tech world lately because of that trend. Most savvy journalists are usually the first to dismiss a new product but they're also always the first in line to pick one up. Hypocrisy is pretty common in that sector and makes it hard to take anything a tech pundit says seriously anymore.

The tech press is completely worthless.  Somehow I've become addicted to reading them though  :-\

The 5GB or was it 250MB plan was $14.99. Unlimited was $29.99.

I think it's cheap because it's just data. Locked to an iPad won't like have the user streaming porn 24/7 and using TB of bandwidth.

To be perfectly honest, if I didn't just buy a netbook (literally last week, and what I'm typing on now) I would be a lot more interested in this.  A netbook is better for the school work I need it for but a tablet is still nice.  I still think a good netbook with a swivel screen would be just as fine, or whenever they have flexible screens go mainstream, have that solution.  The touch screen keyboard doesn't seem bad except that it is completely flat, meaning you look directly down at it while typing; that hurts my neck and back just thinking about typing anything longer than a web page.

I don't see buying this thing until a couple revisions from now.  It doesn't seem that bad despite some hilarious omissions (multitasking, flash); I just don't have a practical use for it.  It's certainly not as bad as the Macbook Air or that ipod clip thing that only lets you shuffle music.

also, just a random anecdote, but judging from an earlier class, people think this is a reader device like the Kindle.  I don't think the average person knows or cares about e-ink.  There were also ~100 people including the professor who seemed to be jazzed about this thing.
