If only HP could figure out a way to get Steve Jobs to hold their shit up in the air and mumble something about a defined purpose.

If only HP had Apple's track record to back up the mumbling.

because when you hand an ipad to your mom or grandmom they're immediately going to clue the fuck in on how to handle it with very little explanation, and they are willing to pay a premium for not having to figure shit out on their own or call you every night to "fix it."

that's basically their secret

i think the slate will be pretty cool, but hand that to moms and she's going to swipe at a few times before handing it back to you and giving you that "i raised a goddamned nerd" look

The Apple logo is like half their marketing power.

I doubt the iPad will have the influence the iPod and iPhone had though.  Those are much more useful for the mass market while tablets are relatively niche.  Plus the iPad's penetration into the netbook and ereader market is pretty limited by it's price and lack of functionality.  I wonder how much they'll change it in the future.

Oh, don't be surprised if the iPad crushed the Kindle as a e-book reader despite price, the screen and limited bookstore (although they have a Kindle app). It's a Apple product. Looking at it logically as a product in terms of price and function compared to competition doesn't work. It has the Apple logo and that changes how things are judged by consumers.

I think the issues with W7 tablets would be running a fully featured OS on an Atom and having decent battery life.  A lot of the praise the iPad has gotten from tech reviewers is the snappiness of the interface.  Having a tablet chug because you're playing HD YT video would really kill the experience.  I think the Android devices have a better shot since it's a mobile OS.

I needed to explain how to activate flash on a digital camera just last week to an older gentleman.  True story.  It took about five minutes to understand what he wanted to do, then another five on how to use the function.

I'm guessing that most early-adopters are either Apple whores or people who wanted a comic reader (cause of the color screen of course).

I don't see it stealing any netbook buyers since there's already a pretty thin line between laptops and netbooks as far as functionality so all the average consumer has to do is pick a screen size and keyboard size they're happy with right now.  iPad doesn't have flash or a keyboard so obviously it can't be your main internet or word processing device.

Nah, I think the iPad will bury the ebook market with ease.
In a hypothetical world where everybody shops around and doesn't develop brand attachment, it doesn't give anything more for anybody who wants an e-book reader other than the color screen.  But, the only thing it does better than an iTouch or iBook is reading books/comics.  I think it's overlap with other Apple products is going to hurt it more in the e-book market than the price or lack of e-ink honestly.

Basically, it's usefulness is pretty niche compared to other Apple products and other e-book readers on the market.  I can totally see comic fans picking it but I don't see this as the next iPod or iPhone.

The general public won't go with the kindle/nook over this. Do you think they honestly know or care about stuff like e-ink or whatever? They see the Apple brand name and that is enough. Thinking the general public is smart enough to shop around and research is a dream. They go with brand names. It won't be as huge as the iPod or iPhone but it will be big enough to crush the e-book market competition. It is a matter of when not if this thing will speed past the Kindle and Nook in sales.

I don't expect them to do anything but compare the iPad with other Apple products.  That might be reasonable.

Why is this guy comparing the iPad to an older (or at least more limited compared to better netbooks with ION) Ideapad?

Didn't it underperform all the analyst estimates? Everyone was saying 700k but then Apple reported 300k. Still impressive but that doesn't put them on track for a million this week.
No, that was a estimate including all pre-orders that had yet to ship due to the first weeks online orders already being completely sold out as well including 3G orders.  According to MacRumors they hit 750k yesterday in actual sales.

I see this product as useless to me but there is no denying Apple has a huge hit on their hands. But that is too be expected with Apple products nowadays.

Also that 300k number was just from day one sales.

because when you hand an ipad to your mom or grandmom they're immediately going to clue the fuck in on how to handle it with very little explanation, and they are willing to pay a premium for not having to figure shit out on their own or call you every night to "fix it."

I dunno; mom and grandmom have trouble with regular cell phones, let alone an iPhone or iPad.  Those types of users would still be scratching their heads over limitations like the lack of flash video or why they can't hook the iPad up to a printer to print out their photos or to their modem/router if they don't have wi-fi.

Nah, I think the iPad will bury the ebook market with ease.

Absolutely.  Apple has already pulled a YOU WA SHOCK, "Kindle you are already dead," etc. etc.  I still think the iPad is too heavy for people to hold it like a book though; I'd equate it to holding an encyclopedia.

Make no mistake about it, even if something better comes along, Apple is going to conquer this new tablet market.  Nobody else is going to be able to come along and match the brand awareness and hype it already has.

the people at Apple are still marketing fucking geniuses.

Seriously, if those guys aren't making millions of dollars, they're underpaid. I really don't know how Apple is able to continually convince people they're the best.
They are expected to hit a million sold in America by the time of their conference tomorrow for a $500+  product. It is mind boggling how successful they are with literally every product they come up with, especially tablets which is normally such a niche product but now just the Apple name and a price hike compared to competition puts it on the cover of both Time and Newsweek during launch week.

Yup. Everything they hit is a home run.
 ::)

Those are all household products now, right? From the gummed-up trackball mouse that can't right-click properly to the totally gimped and renamed iTV, connecting to the crippled shoddy Mobile Me service that Jobs publicly apologized for.

And remember his huge announcement about the "simply beautiful" iPod Hi-Fi? Going to revolutionize how you listen to music? What the fuck happened to that? Oh yeah, no one wants a giant fucking ugly speaker.

And the G4 Cube, well, we best ignore that.

Nah you will see both, this isn't a replacement for the iPhone.

And no not everything they did was huge obviously, it was a over-statement due to Apples insane success. But if you think the iPad is comparable to the AppleTV that is silly. It is clearly a main product line alongside their computers and iPod/iPhone lines.

I just mean the hype levels.  The iPad will be pushed to the side once the new iPhones hit.

And then the next iPads will come out and the cycle will continue.

Yeah, I agree. And Apple wouldn't have it any other way. They'd love for their consumers to alternate their hype for their yearly revisions of both the iPhone and iPad and buy them both each and every year.

Does Apple still make computers?

Every 3 months they 'refresh' their laptops with like an extra 10GB of hard drive space or a little more ram or a better graphics card. Or something minor. That's how you upgrade a Mac.

I would say a new OS, but not 11...still X.  Snow Leopard is great but its basically a speed-only refinement.  I'm sure 10.7 will do some cooler things.

10.6 was a bug fix release and it was still buggy. My favorite 'feature' was how people thought they gained a ton of hard drive space, because it changed from reporting Megabytes to Mebibytes, so that's a 2.4% increase.

You can upgrade a MacBook or MacBook Pro pretty easily.  They accept standard ram and HDs, both Solid State and conventional.  Did Apple kill your dog, Mew?

What bigs do you speak of?  I haven't encountered anything buggy.  And fuck, dude, give some of us a little more credit–I knew about the mebibyte shit and didn't care.  10.6 is great for its 64bit features, even if it isn't as widespread as it should be.

You are such an angry person when it comes to Apple.  I don't understand why either side of the aisle gives two one hundredths of a percent of a shit about this.

I love my macbook pro, I've been recommending it to everyone. For basic media and internet use it's the best thing out there. I have far less problems organizing photos, music, docs and apps than I did on my windows machine. Spaces and expose is so ingrained in how I navigate a computer that when every time I'm on a windows machine I automatically go for the hotcorners (active screen corners) to try and go to another window or program, then I have to adjust to more pedestrian navigation. What I'd like for os x however is that W7 ability of fixing a window to half the screen, handy for comparing docs.

I decided to go with a 32gb WiFi only model seeing as I don't really plan on taking it out of the house that much.  I got it last Friday - after a week I can sum it up by saying that I think its awesome, but not a necessity.

+ Great to read with. I put a couple of ebook on it that I already "owned" and they worked perfectly.

+ browsing on it is pretty slick. I use it for all my rss, Twitter, and news feeds and it works like a champ.  No need to turn on the RoG Laptop. Checking and sending email with it works great too.  That instant on shit is awesome compare to a normal computer.

+ it is super responsive and typing on it is easy as hell.

+ battery life is great.  I have all push notifications and everything turned on - even using wifi non stop it lasts forever. Big plus in my opinion.

- big negative is the glossy screen.  It is one thing to have a glossy screen on a laptop - but this is ridiculous.  need anti-glare screen ASAP.

- iphone apps look like shit, complete shit.  Some games don't look that bad but for the most part the whole being able to use iphone apps on it is useless.

Eel,
reading comics on it is pretty sweet.  I only have the Marvel app right now but they all look super vibrant and tapping on the panels to enlarge them works like a charm.  I have The Walking Dead on my computer and need to find a good comic app to see how it looks.

Sounds awesome!  I played with one for a few minutes at Best Buy.  I was with other people so I didn't get to mess with it too much (no Marvel app for me to try), but I played a little Plants vs. Zombies and some Real Racing, and those were both very pretty and controlled well.  Checked out iBooks and that was pretty damned slick, too.  Didn't have a problem with much glare on the screen even standing under all those retail store lights, but I'll probably get a matte screen protector.  Initial impressions were - yeah, it's a big iPod Touch, but its a big FAST iPod Touch with a great screen and which does a lot of cool shit tailored specifically for the device.

Shame about the HP Slate, cramming that Atom in there was probably a mistake.  They should've bumped the RAM up to 2 GB, as well.  Win7 will probably run fine on it (runs fine on my netbook), but once you fire up a processor-intensive program it's gonna start to chug and chew through the battery in a couple of hours.

The battery life on the ipad is one of the things that impressed me the most.  It really does last a long time - the reviews weren't lying.  and they weren't lying about it being a fingerprint magnet either.

I got the 32gb, but honestly I could have done with the 16.  With AirVideo app and other programs to access files on your normal computer alot of storage just isn't necessary - at least not for me.

HP Slate and MS Courier both canned since the iPad launch.  Slate...whatever.

But the Courier had potential, I think.  Apparently, they didn't really know where to target it?  That doesn't make much sense to me.  Apple put out the iPhone and the app store, then let independent devs create whatever they could out of it.  MS really just needed to have a few of the usual productivity apps, then let everyone else run wild with it.  Sell things via an XBL type market.  It was different enough from the iPad to compete.  Dual screen tablet was a hot idea.

Pretty hard to judge the wisdom of cancelling a project without knowing what the actual state of the project was.  I doubt they were ever planning on supporting third-party apps to begin with, though.

would those really be a defining factor to a touch pad e-book type of device?

it's more that releasing a platform is a much bigger job than releasing a standalone device.
