The newly sloshed What Are You Drinking thread

I was enjoying a rare trip to whisky-land last night, and I thought, "What are my fellow boritos enjoying around the globe?"

So what'll it be?

Not drinking yet, but when I do it'll just be some soju and cider.

Soju is a Korean liquor that is usually around 40 proof. If you can find the good, traditional stuff, then it's basically the Korean version of sake. But the cheap shit you get in the stores basically tastes like watered-down Smirnoff vodka. Still, it's only like a dollar for a small bottle that'll give you a nice buzz, and it's not too bad if you mix it. It gives a bad hangover if you overdo it though. I usually limit myself to one bottle per night before switching to beer.

Not really into alcohol, but a friend and I recently hung out and had a drink. I think I had a Newcastle. Pretty tasty. I'm not big on beer though.

Wow, it's like we're brothers from another mother.  I'm all about Leinenkugel, but I like the Sunset Wheat.  Sam Adams Winter Lager is tasty.  And I loves me some Woodchuck, but I'm an Amber fan.

Currently in the fridge:

Currently in the cabinet:

I've had a nasty-ass cold for the past five days, so I have found the joys of Laphroaig and hot water. In my family, this is called a "Hot Toddie," but I understand that's a different cocktail.

Normally, I don't drink whisky, and I don't drink anything other than single-malts. I'd be ashamed to do this to the Glenfiddich 18 I polished off the other day, but this Laphroaig 10 is really tasty this way.

You need cloves and sugar to make it a real hot toddie but i guess you have the important bits covered.

people are starting to hear about it and are asking if they can come.

it's kind of cool but there's also this sense of deep shame.  one of the people at the party was involved in a conversation with my GF about the game as she had played in highschool so she was totally interested in joining us, but when her boyfreind came back over, they had to stop talking about it because it was too nerdy.

and non players ask me for updates because they're kind of amused by the whole thing.

Sunday, yesterday.

Saturday I tried out a Shadowrun game as I hadn't played that since the early 90s.  I still hate the mechanics of it, but I think i'll keep going to see if the campaign goes anywhere interesting.

i think my favorite moment of our sunday dnd game was when my gf hacked the head off of an ogre and kicked it into the next room as a warning / threat to the Orc Warlord and his two lieutenants.

seeing as we are beyond the drinking watershed of noon, 1 180ml bottle of black nikka (consumed)
half way through 180 ml bottle of jack.

both utter piss, but i'm saving the awesome japanese single malt for my birthday :D

Woah, woah: black nikka is delicious for the price, and super effective at that.

preaching to the choir there, ch1nchilla.

Started on the Cotes Du Rhone about an hour ago. Got some Chimay and Anchor Steam Liberty Ale in the fridge but tempted to save those for tomorrow, when I will start on the chili that's been on the stove all weekend.

I've developed a bad habit of drinking Macallans 12yr old scotch every time I watch an ep of Californication. I only say bad because I've got two full seasons ready to go.

Cohen, I'd also love to hear about this wine too.

And while I can't compete on quality, I might give you a run on quantity. Last night we went to a teppan-yaki/wine bar. A friend had just acquired some local pork belly similar to Iberico, in that they feed only on acorns. While feasting on that, three of us were drinking wine; we went through four bottles: an Italian white which was lively and fruity, then two French reds, the latter of which was described as "all manner of berries" -- lovely, and finished with some port, and finally a dessert wine. Astonishingly, my head was in decent shape this morning.

I meant to comment on this earlier.  Rayas is a traditional holdout in the super-modernized (in terms of wine that means overripe grapes, extraction from the skins, micro-oxygenation to smooth out the rsutic edges, and lots of wood aging).  They have one of the best terroirs (growing area) in the world and they make a remarkably feminine, structured wine.  It's quite expensive, and very rare.  It's the third or fourth bottle on my list I've drunk that I can cross off now.  It's a weird thing to do, but it's fun.

Does indeed sound fun. Have you had a chance to contrast it with anything from the same region that uses modern processes?

I watched a documentary called Beer Wars recently, about the impact of the major brewers and their mass production on beer culture. Very depressing stuff, although it seems to have spawned a healthy backlash. I'd imagine wine is broadly similar. The urge to create consistent product is laudable to a degree, and the technical aspects of it are impressive. However, when that product or methods come to dominate, it actually hurts the market because everything becomes bland and consumers ultimately rebel. (or we get Idiocracy).
