The Wii actually could be a decent system, hardware deficiencies aside. What with its absolutely massive userbase and market penetration, if NOA cared a lick, they could have cultivated an audience of people who buy more then whatever fad of the year they're pushing (exercise, party games, Wii-motion plus). The Wii could have been an alternative to the high budget, risk-averse games that are crowding the big consoles, it could have been a welcoming home to all the kinds of niche games that the Playstation used to house. With a little quality control, and hell, I dunno, actual risks of some sort, Nintendo could have built and nurtured a diverse and unique game library instead of the shovelware home the Wii has become.

I wouldn't characterize the Wii as so much of a failed system rather then a deeply disappointing one.

That is, except for when somebody (usually not Nintendo) does put out something that is totally fucking awesome (Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for instance), but those days are few and far between.

actually, Wii Play is the best selling game in the NPD's history. All the way to the records they've kept since the mid-90's or so. MW2 could top it, but even if it does would it remain on top. Hard to say.

Nintendo cheaped out on their userbase - deliberately and with malicious intent. There was no reason the Wii couldn't be stronger beyond a desire to use the huge backlog of failed GC hardware contracts. Shameful that the fans swallowed their awful excuses whilst paying WAY over the odds for the tech - the complete reverse of the industry norm of paying less for tech and the manufacturing company recouping any loss on software.

Yeah but the Wii features almost decade old technology sold for $250. Nintendo doesn't seem to believe in taking hits on the hardware so software would sell and with Wii being their biggest gamble yet, I understand Nintendo would probably sell the thing for a significant profit so they can recover if it fell flat on its ass.

However it didn't and paying $200 for something that probably costs them $70-80 to make (maybe $100 including overhead) is bullshit.

I can't hate on their model - it works but the Wii is probably the worst leading console of all time. Regardless, I'll get another one this fall for Galaxy 2, replay the first and Mario Kart, and play the 2-3 other Wii titles that is worth playing.

It's tracking ahead of both right now compared to a similar point in their lifespans, but its momentum has slowed a bit, or at least it had until that ridiculous December, so it's by no means a sure thing.

I want to say it would be a disappoint Nintendo for it only to reach ps2 levels, but I imagine they're happy with all that money no matter how it turns out.

Yeah, a few of those games I don't really remember seeing anyone whine about not coming to the other systems (like NMH), but it is a question I've brought up before. How can one constantly complain that the Wii has shitty hardware while at the same time lamenting it not having more worthwhile games?

wii has worthwhile games but it's undeniable that it's home to a lot of shovelware and that a lot of company just put their 2nd grade game while doing the good stuff elsewhere

examples

Squaresoft - chocobo dungeon is a good game for sure but not is not final fantasy 13 has,final fantasy crystal chronicle is really bad,i'm not sure there is a squaresoft game that bad on a hd console...

Capcom - crappy lightgun spinoff on wii,serious game on HD console,wii gets the weird vs fighting game,HD console get street fighter 4,wii gets the crappy version of dead rising,HD console get the sequel

Ubisoft - ubisoft sucks but still wii gets BABIEZ and OMG THE RABBIDS THEY ARE SO WACKY AND IT'S JUST A MINIGAME COLLECTION AND A GAME THAT SOMEWHAT COPIES KATAMARI WITHOUT THE AWESOMENESS and on the HD console they make prince of persia

Namco - I SALUTE YOU NAMCO! YOU HAD THE BALLS TO ACTUAL MAKE AN EFFORT ON THE WII BY RELEASING YOUR LAST TALES GAME ON IT! sure your first tales game on the wii was half assed with 90% of content recycled on it while you were doing the good tales on the HD console but at least you finaly decide to try
also namco did the munchable yet another half assed effort on the wii

Konami - konami has become a pointless software house who exist only because "THEY ARE THE ONES WHO MAKE THE METAL GEARZ" that still doesn't stop the fact that their 2nd effort game went to the wii
