The Ds is one of the greatest gaming platforms of all time, there's no question about it.

I think you are the only one that disagrees with that statement.

I disagree.

DS is one of the best portables.  Maybe the best.  I dunno, GBA/PSP are pretty good too.
Compared to consoles though?  :rofl

That is nitpicking.

It's nitpicking to point out that Wii Play is a controller+demos?

Yeeeah. The DS is an excellent handheld, but compared to home consoles, it ranks under at least three I can name off the top of my head, without even thinking.

As much as I love my DS, most of the library is RPGs.

I still think the DS idea and hardware kinda suck.

Two small (ignore XL) low-res screens instead of one large one is just impractical.  Half the games try to use it as one large screen and fail because of the gap while the rest use it for stats or maps; in both cases, a single large screen would be be better.  For me the hardware has always been uncomfortable; between the sharp boxy shape and how unbalanced it is, it doesn't feel natural to hold like pretty much every other Nintendo handheld or the PSP.

While it's not required, there are still a bunch of choices developers make on the DS that are almost never good.  I'm talking about using the mic to blow into, poor touch screen controls, and trying to make a 3D game that isn't hideous.  That said, there are so many good games for it that most of my problems become irrelevant.

Yeah, no one stopped other companies to try and sell their game with a controller.

I agree that the design of the DS is kind of lame, but you can't deny how well it's sold. It's a fresh and well-planned idea, but at the same time it's kind of stupid. I want a successor to the GameBoy line, but that will never happen.

Third pillar my ass.

I disagree as well.  I was a huge, huge Gameboy and Gameboy Advance fan (GBC was kinda "eh"), but the DS never quite grabbed me the same way.  I'm not big into RPGs, so that's probably a big reason for it.  I have enjoyed the Ace Attorney and Castlevania games, Contra 4, Meteos, Bleach DS 2nd, and Tetris DS, and that's really been about it for me.  In fact, with no new Castlevania or Ace Attorney games released in 2009, I didn't even touch my DS last year.

This gen's handheld wars have been all about the PSP for me.  So many awesome games, plus superior homebrew.  I have 53 PSP games versus 20 DS games in my collection.

Lyte edge is right, the GBA whooped the DS. PSP also has a better library than the DS. It's probably a great handheld if you like a weeaboo RPGs and ancient ports, though.

DS annihilates every previous handheld.  Picross DS and (presumably) 3D Picross. :heart

Edit:  And the GBA is incredibly overrated.  For all the flak the DS receives about remakes, you have to consider that the GBA's biggest feature was that it was a retirement home for old SNES games.  Drill Dozer is probably the best GBA game.  How I wish Game Freak could use their creative energies on something original instead of being a Pokemon sweatshop. :(

The best years for the DS was its first three. It's been garbage ever since. The PSP has blown it out of the water.

And saying that it's better than the GBA :lol

Give me a GBA micro over the DS any day of the week.

I owned a DS - twice - and still have my original PSP model.

You won't find a bigger fanboy for the DS' early years, in fact you can probably dig up a few threads where MrAngryFace and I would rave about Mega Man ZX and the first two Castlevania games. We liked Clubhouse Games and Tetris and several other titles early in the system's life.

It's been downhill ever since. The last two years against the PSP is really unfair, because while the PSP receives less support, the support it did receive blew the DS out of the water.

Again, if you're a giant weeaboo, I'm sure the DS is "the greatest system ever", but if you have your testes firmly in place - probably not.

MLB: The Show, superior version of GTA: Chinatown Wars, sequels to Patapon and LocoRoco, Motorstorm, Resistance: Retribution, LittleBigPlanet, decent Rock Band game, Soul Calibur, Tekken 6, Dissidia and Disgea 2 (if that's your thing), Monster Hunter, PixelJunk, etc.

Yeah, what an awful year for the PSP!

When I owned a DS three times (from the 2004 launch to 2007), the only three games I liked on it were Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, and Tetris DS.  The annual Metroidvanias that got pumped out were boring and stale.  As were the Ace Attorney games.  I do want to check out games like The World Ends With You.  I do not, however, want to play ass-ugly 3D remakes of Final Fantasy nor quick cash in SNES and early PS1 era ports.  I'm not a graphics whore but if you're going to update games to 3D, either do it right or don't do it at all.

The wii is fine for light browsing.  Now that I actually have a pc, I can't say there is a whole lot I do with it that the wii couldn't do besides hulu and itunes.  Still mostly browsing when I'm bored.

edit: come to think of it, back when I had a psp I did some wifi leeching with it.  I don't think it supported youtube at all.  Could be a bad memory on my part though.

DS vs GBA thing is is tough because of two reasons: I liked the hardware more (even the original GBA would be nice if it had a backlight) and it had a good original Zelda game on it.

Both are really good.  DS pretty much destroys the GBA with puzzle games and rpg.  GBA has better action and platformer games, but the DS isn't exactly bad with those games either.

If we're bringing PSP into this, it annihilates DS and GBA combined for racing games.  Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart, though.   Also, because I just remembered it, Duke Nukem GBA > any shooter on the DS.

I like PSP, GBA, and DS for different reasons.

Pokemon needs a long holiday more than just about any other franchise, in my opinion.  I'm with you on wishing Gamefreak got more chances to show their action game chops.

Pokemon doesn't need a vacation. It's similar to fighting games at this point - they just keep iterating on it and tweaking the balance for competitive play. Throw in some new Pokemon once in a while and a throwaway story for the kids and it's a perfect formula. They just need to work on their DS engine, as it's way too slow compared to the GBA games.

I wonder if the Wii will outsell the Ps1 or Ps2.

It's tracking ahead of both right now compared to a similar point in their lifespans, but its momentum has slowed a bit, or at least it had until that ridiculous December, so it's by no means a sure thing.

The Wii won't outsell the Ps2, but the Ds will do so very soon.

So not only will Nintendo have the best portable gaming platform ever made, they'll also have the highest selling videogame platform of all time.

You're going senile again, prole; EOII was 2008.

More proof that the DS sucks. EmCeeGrammar, you'd be happy to know that the PSP also has superior versions of Space Invaders Extreme and N+.

Prole coined the term "gaming ghetto" just for the Nintendo DS. Never forget.

I had a lot of people tell me that Space Invaders Extreme was better on DS actually. Better music, at the very least. I can't stand playing on the PSP though, just so uncomfortable to hold, hate the ghosting, and I hate how the shell gets so fucking greasy. Was hoping PSP Go actually was gonna be something decent, so I can play these PSP games I bought, but naah. I'll just stick with my DS. (which needs more 2D and less 3D games)

PSP

This is bound to be Nintendo's finest generation overall. Software wise, they've actually enhanced the quality of their IPs in every single way, and with the upcoming release of Zelda Wii, which is bound to be spectacular, I think it's safe to assume that, from a first party standpoint across both platforms, they've outdone themselves this gen. Easily the best developer this generation. Easily.

As far as the DS, it's legacy as one of the best gaming devices ever (if not the best) will soon be painted, whether a bunch of jilted and frustrated PSP owners like it or not. The DS's portfolio is undeniable and comparing it to that of the PSP is like comparing the Beatles catalog to fucking Owl City. "I'd like myself beliiiiiieeeeeveee" STFU!

Raban

  • Senior Member
I totally respect people preferring their handheld of choice, but saying the PSP has a superior library compared the the DS is flat-out wrong. This isn't GAF, and I'm not going to list-wars, the DS has a much more solid library, more reliable and user-friendly hardware (sans media functionality, unfortunately), and generally more support from big-name developers. I'm not saying in any way that the PSP is crap, it's an excellent system, and some of the games on there rock. Don't forget the ability to play PS1 games on there as well as some occasionally rad PSN games.

Regardless of all that, the DS still comes out the victor. Willco's just being a bitter fanboy.

Stop typing on your Android smartphone, Viscen!

... This forum was pretty pro-DS its first several years. Then it began to suck (a lot). It's unfortunate. I think Prole and other people noted that it managed to have some fun games in spite of the lame touch screen gimmick. Almost all of its best games use traditional controls and barely use the dual screen functionality for anything worthwhile (oh look, a map! inventory! yay!). The DS wishes it had a widescreen and regular controls.

i don't know,it's hard to have a counter argument to "2009 sucked for the ds" let's take a look at a list  :-\
http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=ds&cat=0&year=2009&numrev=0&sort=0&letter=&search=
this list is horrible

GTA - meh
Mario & Luigi 3 - meh
Might & magic Clash of heroes - actualy pretty good, should be higher than those two
Spirit tracks - meh
Layton 2 - not as good as the original
Peggle - everybody loves peggle but the tiny ds graphics leave a bit to be desired
Devil Survivor - meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh
Dragon Quest V - good but still it's a remake of an old game
Pokemon Platinum - see my previous post
Rhytm Heaven - WHY IT'S SO FUCKING LOW,JOURNALIST ARE distinguished mentally-challenged!
Henry Hatsworth - meh
Fire Emblem - meh
Retro Game Challenge - actualy good
PS0 - meh
Knights in the nightmare - just no
Scribblenauts - worst game evah
Starfy - meh
Suikoden Tiekresis - an horrible entry to the awesome suikoden franchise
Kingdom hearts 358 - ultra crappy spinoff, feels like an insult when psp gets the one with the new bosses and the new world
Galactrix - haven't heard great thing about it,better played on a big screen
Trackmania DS - don't like racing game
Valkyrie Profile - don't like SRPG,don't like valkyrie profile, double meh
Mario & Sonic Olympic Winter - mehmehmehmehmehmehmehmeh
Nostalgia - i played it trough the end but it really was like the most generic rpg ever
Avalon Code - really disappointing game

the "miss" outnumber the "hit" by a lot,i think my most played DS game this year was the 2009 version of yu-gi-oh and i hope that my most played DS games of 2010 isn't going to be the 2010 version :-\

I don't think there is a single game you listed that I'd even want to play, outside of Chinatown Wars and Peggle - both of which have superior versions everywhere else.

I don't see any reason to upgrade especially now since I'm not playing the thing. I wanted to when the Lite first came out, but I was broke and heard about everyone's hinge cracking. DSi selling for $170-180 has always been a joke to me.
