Being in a university in swing state has some advantages.

Howard Dean - a politician but he was all over.  Got to shake his hand and shit.
Tom Daschle - A shame he turned out the way he did.  He probably gave the best speech I ever listened to.
Leonard DiCaprio - He was wandering around.  I think I said, "What's up" and replied in kind.  Not too eventful.
Dave Matthews - I opened the door for him but his music sucks so moving on...

I met more but these are who I met.

I live in the same town as Russel Crowe, only saw him in person once outside the bakery. His brother once took a piece of roast beef off of my little brothers plate at a party though.

I've only met a few musicians and politicians.

But I have found that celebrities are usually shorter than I'm expecting for some reason.  And if they're a newsreader behind a desk they're often fatter.

Seems every J-GAFfer I know has met Rogers.  Dude gets around.

indeed he does.

Oh, recently some guy asked me for some help recently on the street near my home. Turns out it was Berlin based DJ/label owner Fuckpony.

Jay Haze?  :o That is AWESOME.

I've also seen Mick Foley around town quite a few times, but never went up to talk to him.

I've met quite a few celebrities as I worked for a theatre that saw quite a few high-profile comedians and the likes. All are British so you may not know them all.

Ricky Gervais
Stephen Fry (He was sooooooo nice)
Russell Brand
Jimmy Carr
Robin Ince
Chris Addison (dude in In The Loop)
Stephen Merchant
Stephen K Amos

And many more! Mostly it was just hello, asked what they wanted to drink, exchanged pleasantries etc. All were nice except for Ricky Gervais who was the biggest diva I have ever met.

Yes he seemed like a nice guy when I met him. At least he wasn't demanding we get him chicken satay despite the fact that there are NO Thai restaurants in the vicinity. Nor did he show absolute disgust at our lack of Fosters beer, which by the way, is shit.

Super jealous.

I've never met a celebrity, not sure I want to because it's a total Catch-22. If you're a fan of theirs, you want to say hello and be friendly, but to them you're still a complete stranger. And if you don't say anything, well that just sucks.

That reminds me that I saw Chris Klein wandering about in a mall in Omaha with Katie Holmes.  Chris Klein isn't considered to really be a celebrity after 1999 so he doesn't count.

I almost ran over Warwick Davis in Orlando.  Literally.  I was walking through Universal Studios and he was there signing autographs.  As he left his table, he turned and walked into my knees.  I didn't see him there until I looked down.   :lol  He was cool about it and said it happened all the time.

Also got to play some music with Vincent DiMartino while in college.  He's a really famous trumpet player and John Williams' right hand man for trumpet solos in any of his music.

Other than that, not much...

Oh yeah, I hung out with Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian one night. That was seriously awesome.

Also - completely forgot about this one : Muse.

on the flight that had me move to Japan in 2000, Muse were sitting next to my ex and I in cattle class. She was chatting away with them, i was too busy crapping myself and hammering the whiskey as i wasn't a fan of flying back then.

You knew of them back in 2000? That was before Origin of Symmetry even (which is still by far their best album).

Who didn't know of them back in 2000? Shit, I saw Muse back in 1999 in support of Showbiz.

I shared an elevator with Ichirou once. The guy is a lot taller than I'd expected, and really handsome. It took me a couple minutes to place him, because he asked me "Push two, please?" in American-accented English, and I had thought Ichirou's English would have been like Asian Buttmuncher's. Anyway, I couldn't push two because my hands were full of baggage, and his were empty, so I was in full-on WTF mode until we reached the lobby.

Mick Fleetwood was at Renaissance Faire (Agoura) one year when I was working (1988 maybe?), and I saw him in the parking lot, dressed like a wizard. It was cute.

After TGS once I saw Kevin Perreira in Akiba, looking really wild-eyed and exhausted. I wasn't familiar with his stuff at the time or I would have said "hi." Or "Where's Olivia?"

Edit: :lol at "asian buttmuncher" for poor Godzilla's name.

i almost forgot this story

when i went to the cincinnati tennis tournament in the early 2000s i stayed in the same hotel as andre agassi and lleyton hewit, agassi always just zipped to and from his room but lleyton hung around a lot more, i was in line with him for the breakfast buffet a couple mornings :lol  anyways to the gist of the story, back then i didnt really follow tennis, since i had more than enough of it in my life from just playing it, so i didnt really know all the players, and when me and my family first got to the hotel we sat in an empty restaurant/bar thats in the middle of the hotel and didnt have any walls and was open to everything else, me and my sister are sitting there eating chex mix from the bar and this guy who i later found out was lleyton walks in with some other guy and have to circle the entire bar to get to the elevators, the entire time he was doing this he was staring at my sister, now im known to be notoriously overprotective of my family in general, so i yell out "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKIN AT", him and the guy he was walking with laugh and he yells back "NO WORRIES"

my sister eventually worked up the nerve to say hi when he and his entourage were having coffee in the lobby, when she extended her hand the guys next to him went all secret service and he ducked down a little bit, i think they thought she was going to shoot him or something :lol

edit: its also worth mentioning that at the same tournament when my sister leaned over the railing to get andy roddick's autograph after one of his matches he looked at her, winked, and signed right on his crotch, it was the cover of a magazine he was on and he was mid shot and you could kind of see his junk

One of John Jesus Calipari's assistants paid several parking tickets for me.

I also ran (quite literally) into and summarily over Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow's parents once outside of Commonwealth Stadium. Tim Tebow is a fucking GIANT. Nice guy, though.

I don't think I've met many, if any.

I once met a guy immediately after he was rejected on the NBA draft (because of free-throw stats I think).  I don't know if he eventually made it though.  ESPN did a piece on the ugliest rookies of the year which he was on so he was a bit famous at least..

I also met Joe Brown, the former mayor of Oakland who is currently in the gubernatorial race.  He seemed like a cool guy but then he's a politician so who knows.

Oh and I also had one teacher in my High School who had Steve Jobs as a student (the Apple HQ is like 2 miles away).  He liked to brag about giving Steve Jobs a D.  So that's like knowing somebody who knows somebody famous.
my sister eventually worked up the nerve to say hi when he and his entourage were having coffee in the lobby, when she extended her hand the guys next to him went all secret service and he ducked down a little bit, i think they thought she was going to shoot him or something :lol
The same thing happened to my friend with Peter Moore.  It was at the North America X360 launch and he saw him looking real nervous surrounded by 4 body guards and just weaved in said "HOW YA DOING?" and shook his hand quickly.  I can't believe that Peter Moore would get that much security.

Huh. I'd no idea. His English was so good that I started thinking he was not Asian. Seriously, I'm surrounded by poorly pronounced English from Japanese people all day long here, so when I'm in the USA and any Asian chimes in without an accent, it's outside the realm of expectations.

I took a piss next to Nick Faldo (ex PGA) at some restaurant in Maui, and he was a nice guy. Or at least as nice as you could be when someone calls you out for being you while taking a piss.

Also, when I was like 8 and Coolio was still famous, I was at the Red Carpet Club in Heathrow and Coolio was also there. He let me chill with him and his entourage and we played Bloody Roar on his PlayStation w/ TV adapter. It was a good time.

Sat behind Mandy Moore with Bacchus7 and another friend watching Superbad at the local theatre in Oregon (her bus was going through town for a tour), but we both completely pussied out and failed to say anything to her. Fucking horrible.

Also met a lot of Chicago-area sports stars when I was a little kid, most notably Frank Thomas and Scottie Pippen. I still have a Sox hat signed by Frank Thomas.
