« on: February 14, 2010, 12:54:11 PM »
Just installed the Dark Void demo and first thing I hear is that smug fucking sonumabitch voice
 :drake

That's like the millionth time I hear that distinguished mentally-challenged fellow voice. Like I'm watching lowbudget cartoons.

Dude wants to get paid and make ends like anyone else. I don't fault him.

Blame every lazy dev and publisher who keep hiring the same voice actor.

Not even that, blame them for wanting the same sounding person.

It's not even really about the voice actor, but about the directors that want him to be Drake in every game. I forget which role it was, but there was one instance where I had no idea it was him until it was pointed out to me.

supposedly that was the dev's decision.

rumor was that he asked if they wanted an accent of some sort but they just told him to be himself.

I've actually only really liked him in Uncharted. The other stuff he has worked on has been okay voice wise but nothing that I really overly paid attention to.

He does have an ability to speak normally rather than in stilted video game voicework in a booth type stuff most voice actors deliver so I understand why people keep trying to get him but just like acting the role still has to be suited for him. Uncharted works with him because it feels like the whole game world has been designed around the personality of that voice. The rest of these games using him don't.

I think Roger Craig Smith does a nice job of mixing up his voice.

Chris Redfield in RE 5

Ezio Auditore in AC 2.

yeah, I remember reading something where the Prince of Persia guys pretty much told him to voice the prince like Drake.  I think it has less to do with the voice actor and more with every dev writing the same character, except they all do it poorly while Uncharted manages to pull it off.  If you look at old Dark Void footage, there wasn't any evidence that the main character would be a sarcastic douchey guy.

I prefer him to the Dreamcast days of picking the third shift janitor to voice the protagonist.

Nolan North being in a lot of games isn't the problem. It's when developers ask the poor guy to do the Nathan Drake voice for every big game he's hired for.

That being said, I'm pretty tired of the Nathan Drake voice (unless its in Uncharted).

its sad hes basically being typecast.

Absolutely.

Even though I wasn't a fan of all the repetition of the game, I could've slogged my way through the thing if it wasn't for him.  Fuck that dude.

Eh. His voice did suck, but I wouldn't say that it was even close to being the only shitty thing in PoP 2008.

Assassin's Creed series, he voices Desmond Miles.  At least you don't have to listen to him for most of the game!

It was awful in the Prince of Persia game.
