Quote from: Hollywood & Fine
Like a lunatic's trip to Wonderland, it builds suspense with only brief respites, reaching a climax that is truly shattering. Hang on tight.

Quote from: Urban Cinefile
Martin Scorsese's sure hand directs this thriller with the precision of a brain surgeon and the grace of an artist

Quote from: CHUD
The work of a master at his height. This is Scorsese flexing his muscles and cracking his knuckles and making a movie that's intense and thrilling and engrossing and beautiful and dense.

Quote from: Hitfix
Scorsese's in Cape Fear mode here, making his own version of the sort of thing that rocked his world when he was younger... [a] horror film, but with a haunted house that travels on two legs.

Quote from: Dread Central
Shutter Island sets a tone straight out of the gate with dark, shadowy imagery, a muted color palette, and a splash of noir-esque style peppered across the top.

This isn't the first thriller Scorcese has done, though.

Still, looking forward to it.

I've grown to loathe the trailer and at this point the movie in a way.  I'm still going to see it.  But the wife and I see about two movies a week and we have been since the trailer regularly since... October of last year?  STOP PLEASE GOD STOP SHOWING IT :'(

I'll still be there day 1.

I think my wording is vague enough, but just in case.

I also thought it was pretty good.  Well executed, well acted, well shot, yadda yadda yadda, but entirely hinged on the twist.  A friend of mine that had read the book came along and was not particularly enthralled sitting through the movie knowing the outcome, which I suppose is acceptable as a valid complaint considering what most of the movie amounts to after the big reveal.  Still, entertaining as a bitch the first time through.

I hadn't read the book but imo the movie's first half was much better than the latter half. It barely seemed like a Scorsese film in the first act, then it just kind of became predictable past the halfway mark. Still an excellent, excellent movie.

very good film, just saw it. I thought the ending actually wasnt ambiguous enough, a lot of things were very clear cut in the resolution, where I thought they should have left things a bit more open so the viewer could determine what they believed the truth was. Thats just my opinion anyway, with a story like that not everyone is going to be happy.

Just came back from it. Wow, awesome movie but the ending was definitely a little heavy handed (it doesn't feel like there's any room for interpretation). Had other issues with it too (wished it went in another direction in general) but as far as cinematography, stylistically and visually, such an awesome movie in that regard.

I also don't get the complaints on Dicaprio's acting, there was never a moment where I disliked it.

I thought it was a lot better than The Departed, but I always thought that was Marty's most overrated film of all-time. The Aviator was Marty's best flick from the last decade.

Also, just for context, I've been watching a lot of 1950s flicks, so part of my enthusiasm for Shutter Island is somewhat related to that. Like I said, make the whole picture monochrome and slap on some artificial print anomalies, and you'd never know it was filmed this decade.

The Aviator had an absolutely shit screenplay.  I mean, I own it on DVD and I enjoyed it and all, but it's one of Scorsese's weakest pictures in recent memory.  Even Gangs of New York was better.

Aviator had great direction, great performances, great everything except the script.

Gangs of New York was miscast (Cameron Diaz really doesn't belong in period pictures) and was fucked with by Harvey Weinstein...I would really love to see that early cut that existed before Harvey Scissorhands got his meaty paws on it.  I still feel there's a really great picture in there somewhere, just like I felt about Kingdom of Heaven before the director's cut came out.

Aviator is still great. And the cinematography makes the BluRay a must. I love how the purposely changed the color throughout the movie to match the technicolor of the era which the movie is taking place in at that point.

I find it funny that The Aviator was obviously Scorsese's attempt at macking a slick Oscar picture so he could finally get an Academy Award, and when that didn't work he decided to make a remake of a fun, cheesy Asian b-movie and that's what finally won him an Oscar. :lol

Gangs is pretty mediocre, The Aviator is a terrific picture all around. Marty should have won his Oscar for that. Going to have to respectfully disagree with the screenplay as well - it's a terrific biopic.

or me.

To be fair though, the reason I didn't like the aviator was also just because of its script but because it didn't cut the mustard as a biopic because it didn't fully show how fucked up Howard Hughes became.  It just showed the most Hollywood-acceptable part of his life, which I understand but it makes the movie mean fuck-all as a biopic.

Cajole loves The Departed too.  :-*

All kidding aside, I do stand by my statement that The Aviator has a piss-poor script.  It's a very by-the-numbers biopic.  The direction and the performances are outstanding (even the Jude Law cameo is perfect), but it can't overcome the fact that the script, the very skeleton of the movie, has osteoporosis.

or me.  to be fair though, the reason I didn't like the aviator very much was also because of the script but because it wasn't really about showing the person, just about showing him at the best of his life.  Not when he was old, disgusting, and even more insane.  which would have shown you what the actual Howard Hughes was like.

Aviator showed Hughes how he should be remembered. If you want to see a malnurished heroin addict dying in a Las Vegas hotel room, maybe David Lynch will make a Howard Hughes movie for you someday.

I really don't see what else was that interesting about Howard Hughes.  His mind was so extraordinarily fucked up because of his substance abuse and his germophobia, that any biopic about him should just mainly focus on how he became so fucked up (for the rest of his life...).  A movie about that would be very interesting but instead we saw Scorsese focusing on a few physical things that Howard Hughes made, sort of diminishing the importance of how this guy was completely disconnected from reality.

He was actually focusing his OCD on film and aviation.  The movie instead tries to say that he succeeded in those fields DESPITE his mental problems.  Seriously, this is like saying Hitler was successful in turning around Germany's economy despite being a complete sociopath.
