My 360 power brick started making some REALLY weird, bad noises suddenly. I went looking for instructional material, and found this:

I had to visit two stores to find the right drivers, but since 360 slim power bricks are not sold on Amazon.co.jp (Dragon Japan, likely a Chinese company is the Amazon storefront), I had to at least try to repair it. An hour, one stripped security screw, and two passes on the fan later, my brick is silently providing power again.

My sense of accomplishment is almost certainly overblown, but I feel pretty snazzy right now.

Went to Gamestop over the weekend to trade more crap in towards the PS4. The system is now fully paid for with trade-ins and I had enough credit leftover to cover half of one of the games I reserved. Not too shabby.

However, the following exchange occurred:

Clerk: Hi, you got some trade-ins? Putting them on anything?
Me: Yeah, trading it towards a PS4 pre-order.

There's a well-done walkthrough for Ryu ga Gotoku 5 available now. It doesn't translate every single line of dialogue, but does a nice job giving you a rundown of what's going on. And hell, if you really want to play it, it's better than nothing.

Most fighting games treat returning characters as new characters. Last week they announced Slayer is returning in Guilty Gear Xrd.

That, and sometimes content is lost when upgrading to a newer console (GT5, Forza 5 have fewer cars and tracks than GT4, Forza 4).

You know, I normally don't care about 720p/1080p, 30fps/60fps and I think DR3 will be a fun game that I really do want to play at some point (either with PC port or getting an XBONE down the line after price cuts), but 720p/30fps on DR3 really comes off as pretty pathetic to me considering it doesn't really look noticeably better than DR2, which ran at 720p/30fps on X360.

Maybe there's a few dozen more zombies on screen at once and the maps a little bigger (latter is yet to be seen), but character models, environment models, lighting, physics, etc... everything looks the same. I'm not seeing any reason why DR3 couldn't have been an X360/PS3/PC game. I guess I just expect SOMETHING a little more impressive for an exclusive next-gen title. Forza, KI and Ryse look nice. Crimson Dragon looks like X360 XBLA because that's what it was. Was DR3 supposed to be a last gen game like Crimson Dragon that they quickly ported over?

It looks much better to me (I played DR2 on PC) and it's an open world this time, although I'm not a fan of the new drab/desaturated look to it. I'd blame the location, but even Case Zero had more color to it. I'm trying to say it looks good and it's coming off more negative than intended. It's the most interesting launch game between the two consoles.

if we're talking next gen games that don't look impressive, Knack doesn't look as good as the Ratchet and Clank PS3 game from 2007, and Forza 5 is pretty unimpressive outside of city locations (or was downgraded since E3?). The prague course from E3 looked nice. The recent mountain courses don't look that much better than Forza 4/GT5. To be fair the first Forza on 360 also looked pretty rough. These are launch games and things will only improve.

Unfortunately, despite MK12's sizable technical competence, it still feels so much like a bog standard AC game that I'm having trouble feeling any love for it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I am either already done, or won't be doing this still in 10 years. I really enjoyed being back in the USA and working in a western development environment last year; so much so that I am unwilling to return to a Japanese dev environment.

The section on QA is telling. I haven't worked in QA, but I'm empathetic to their situation. There is certainly disparity between how QA is treated and how the development team is treated.

However, on all the projects I've worked, the members of the development team all knew how to put together a coherent sentence in email, describe any current impediments to doing their job so that the impediment could be cleared, and knew how to take a shower.

In contrast, though there are always a couple people in QA who Have Their Shit Together, at least half of the QA workers in games have been people I wouldn't trust to put a hamburger together for me. There are so many times I've heard the cry for equal treatment for QA, but they're not evidencing equal competence, or even the desire to become competent. I'm not asking that they know how to program or build a level, I want them to write a defect report which accurately describes steps to repeat the defect, in a language closely approximating English.

I've sat in on QA roundtables at GDC, and the signal-to-noise ratio is always very poor, where much of the conversation is self-victimizing "why can't we get respect?" as opposed to "how can we become respected?" It starts with self-respect and is enhanced by actually doing the job.

I see a lot of start-ups coming from developers, and that's great -- it gives me a lot of hope that there will be a group of people in charge who don't want to put others through the hell they've been through. Or maybe I'm being naive again.

Can I ask a serious question here?

I can't help but see a large vocal group of gamers on Neogaf that are gay for Sony and the playstation brand. I just wonder why they think Sony is the best thing since white rice. Yeah they might have a technical edge with their console. But the love for Sony almost seems unnatural at times over there on gaf. How does one become so devoted to a brand like that? Is it a case similar to that of the cult of Apple? Also what is up with the unwarranted hate towards the Xbox One? As someone who is fortunate enough to be getting both consoles I don't buy much into the reasons people have been putting up as valid points of such disdain and hatred. The two consoles are just that game consoles with unique and different experiences to be shared with their respective audiences.

It disturbs me that even today we have this rampant fanboy flame war bullshit that seems so childish and immature. It paints gamers and video games by association in a negative light. I often question why a real gamer would let themselves stoop to such depravity. Cause in my eyes a real gamer rise above that shit and wants games regardless of what platform there on!

Sony came in as an underdog against Nintendo and Sega, and SONY CLEANED HOUSE. Microsoft even failed to topple them with the first Xbox. When the 360 appeared and dethroned Sony, the Sony Army became the Sony Defense Force, and many see this nearly simultaneous launch as the blaring of horns as this climactic battle begins.

Their fans have chosen a side -- it's too bad Sony itself doesn't really care who they are.

Video games is a major hobby for a lot of nerds (myself included). That plus a lot of nerds don't have a lot of disposable income so they buy a console and need to know the company behind it will not screw them over. So a loyalty forms there.

Obvs brand loyalty exists everywhere anyways but it's compounded by the nerd culture.
