It's a new port based on the Dreamcast version with hd visual upgrade, new difficulty etc.

never played grandia ii but finding it it had the same scenario writer as the two lunar games has bumped it to the top of my must-play list

It's very early 2000's edgy emo lead character "church is bad" RPG plot, super linear too but damn the battle system is awesome.

Quote
-Setting is Tokyo and planet called Plotraksa(?)
-12 young protagonists gets Shinigami (Evil God)'s soul in them so they become immortal, and they end up getting involved with battle of Gods
-Dungeon traveling is 3D Sideview with SD characters
-you can perform actions like jump and dash to progress dungeons
-enemies are symbol encounter so you can attack them first
-battle involves 4 characters in system called active chain battle
-Each members are bound to the 4 face buttons (○/×/□/△) and when you press each button corresponding characters attack
-you have to think of the order of the attack to keep the combo going, and higher combos will result battle chance of rare items
-In the battle there is 'front row' and 'back row' and you can switch them during battle. Front row has higher damage output but is easier for enemies to attack. Back row has lower damage but it's harder for enemies to attack you.
-main characters have power of shinigami, so you can unlock those powers to do special attacks

-story is not your typical "good guys beat evil guys"
-you have important choices to choose which member you send back to Earth. The order in which you send characters back to Earth will have influence on the road to the ending.
-time it takes to beat the game is around 40~50 hours
-There is extra dungeon after you beat the game
-there are lots of post-game contents
-online elements include time attack on boss battles

Wait a second... some of this stuff sounds REALLY familiar.  :hyper :hyper :hyper

Plus its directed by MASAKING!!! :hyper :hyper :hyper

The core gameplay is good, but story and characters are a huge downgrade. I never finished it.

Should I just go ahead and play 3 then? I heard it's set in the same time as VC

Last time I checked VC3 wasn't available in English. I can't read Japanese so I never played it myself.

Why not move on to a different series? I'm currently playing Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch - Tyranid Invasion and that's a great game if you're into turn-based strategy.

Three has a fan patch. It's pretty solid from what I played. Same good VC gameplay, but the story moves back to something like the first one.

With how fickle older PS3s can be (knock on wood a million times) - better off just buying a PS2 w/ Component imo. Component thankfully is not as pricey as a Gamecube component cable.

It depends on the model (I have the 60 GB from the European launch). I've run into issues with some games and I prefer using my modded PS2 instead.

Hmm, thanks. That should look better than component.

60 GB PS3s are going for ~$100 on Amazon. A PS2 with official component cables, an extra controller, memory card, and component switcher (realized my TV only has one component input) cost around the same.

IDK, do those older PS3s really have a bad rep? 60 GB models have the actual PS2 hardware, not relying on software like the 80 GB models (AFAIK). It'd be nice having access to the PS3 library too.

Not sure if it's due to discrepancies in reporting, but looking at this Wiki list, the PAL 60 GB PS3s have more issues with games than the NTSC ones.

Yes, that's correct. The launch US model comes with more PS2 hardware.

I could neither play Shadow Hearts or Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army on the later model.

A bonus video I hadn't seen before from the earlier set, the Double Fine guy remade his one BioShock level in Doom, and now Romero's playing through it. More talk about modding/level design/old games vs. new/etc. LeBreton discusses how he didn't have any of the audio direction from BioShock to use so had to use keys to direct the player, etc. Romero notes how the pace is completely different and there's more "sights" that lead to nothing whereas in Doom it'd be some secret like life or ammo or a key or hidden pathway or switch that does something somewhere else in the level.

And he gets completely lost like ten times.

You can tell he really gets a kick out of how the guy tried to recreate the BioShock atmosphere with the more limited elements available in the Doom engine. Ponders about more games being "demade" like this. Which I think would be cool to see even as mod/fan levels.

Also, how Romero chose his house because it subconsciously reminded him of his Doom level design concepts.
