Rather than anything resembling worthwhile gameplay Sega instead blew their PSO2 Ep IV budget on this Sachiko concert insanity.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs  :heartbeat :heartbeat :heartbeat :tauntaun

Finished it.  The story...I liked the first half/65% more than Amnesia which was scary but kind of dumb and ended in a stupid silly boss with an old guy, but then the 2nd half, last 35% was kinda -_-
The presentation however was top-notch.  Walking through the MACHINE was fucking straight out of a Trent Reznor music video with gnarly mashing sounds, absolutely fantastic voice acting and omg the soundtrack is A++  I liked the music/acting in Dear Esther as well, so I'm pretty big <3 on Chinese Room's sound design and Jessica Curry's music.

The gameplay was...a walking sim narrative story ride.  You either are cool with those or you aren't.  I'm fine with them if the narrative is compelling, which it definitely was here.

Overall, not perfect, mainly because it's a narrative game and the narrative starts off being super awesome Twilight Zone Episode x Lovecraft x March of the Pigs, but then ends up:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Being this goofy as shit about MANPIGS INVADING LONDON which is about as scary as  :doge and the whole concept in the end that (here is the actual story which is pretty dumb):

1.  Dude goes to Mexico and find MAGIC ORB AT AZTEC RITUAL SACRIFICE RUINS that shows him visions of WW1/2 and his children dying at war
2.  Dude comes back and murders his children in ritual sacrifice to save them from that future
3.  Dude then uses their blood sacrifice and the EVIL MAGIC ORB that talks to him to build A GIANT MACHINE TO CLENSE THE WORLD
4.  GIANT EVIL MACHINES STRATEGY FOR CLENSING WORLD?  Grow MANPIGS and send them out to kill people and drag them into the machine because hey it runs on humans soylent green.
...
...
...
 :neogaf

Ok, so serious trying to be legitimate Poe/Lovecraft Victorian Macarabe's storytelling is about growing man pigs that look like the FFXII piglet race and letting them loose on the world to destroy humanity

...
...
..
:neogaf

That is so fucking dumb

Anyhow, the rest of the story is
5.  Dude somehow gets some humanity back and sabatoges the machine before it can start
6.  Dude gets amnesia and machine talks to him and leads him to believe his children are in the machine and he must fix the sabatoge and restart the machine
7.  Dude restarts machine and machine goes LOL GOTCHA and lets loose piglets on humanity
8.  Dude decides once again to sabatoge the machine and hopefully does a better job this time.
9.  Dude succeeds - THE END

Man, the story was so much better until the machine lets loose the MANPIGS on the town like 65% in.  The rest is fine, but it just kind of loses all credibility at the purpose of the entire machine being to make a manpig army to kill humans.  Lovecraft would've come up with a much more interesting concept.
[close]

Still would recommend it to everyone.  It's like $5 and 4 hours and the sound and music alone is worth experiencing.  I liked Dear Esther a lot, and I like this a lot outside of where the story goes, will definitely check out Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and see how that lives up to these two.

I have little interest in playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, but I heard the soundtrack was good. It really is.

Yeah, these are major spoilers but samples of how good A Machine For Pigs music is (the game is worth playing for the soundtrack alone):

Dear Esther also had really nice voice acting & music.  Definitely seems like the Studio's strength (now I'm getting myself hyped to play Rapture):

Rapture is great (I've only watched, which is pretty much the same as having played it :lol). It is much more like Dear Esther. A radio drama turned into a video game, essentially.
Certainly worth the couple of hours it lasts. The acting is good and small town England is beautiful.

i'm pretty cool with platinum games settling into this role as workhorse studio for other creative teams. Since nier2 was announced for steam this might have a shot at that too, I imagine they are likely using a lot of the same tech, so that's an exciting development as well.

My PS3 hasn't been hooked up for a few years so I tend to forget those games.

Overall, it is still a pretty good deal for me. It's $1 per game and most months I play 2 or 3 of them. This month, I've been enjoying Tricky Towers.

Mr. Positive Touch you keep recommending Doom and I'm interested. Though, I'm not much of a shooter fan I can enjoy a good shooter but would readily admit I'm terrible at them. How's the horror aspect? I never much cared for horror shooters.

Other than demonic/horror aesthetics, there's no horror in Doom. It's a straight-up, run-and-gun, non-stop, death-metal frenzy.

I might sound stupid, but DOOM 2016 feels almost like a cuhrayzee game.  It has the same tempo as DMC or Bayonetta (walk to room -> fight enemies -> kinda dick around for sparse secrets -> rinse and repeat).

Basically what I'm trying to say is the game is fucking awesome and you should play it.

it has an easy difficulty so you shouldn't have much  trouble. the gameplay flow has you weakening enemies, then going in for a finishing move that will restore your health so it encourages you to go wild and get right up in the action. it's really fun.

I would really suggest playing on Nightmare difficulty.  The game can get ridiculously hard (got stuck in one room for like 45 minutes) but it's super satisfying.

A Nightmare run took me about 14 hours to complete and I'm shit at FPS.

This heatwave was giving my PC a beating, so I finally got off my ass and looked at the heatsink. Good idea, as the thermal paste had dried so completely it came off in flakes. Very easy to clean in this state, but I should have done this much sooner. Lo and behold, my CPU now stays at 60°C under load, whereas it hit 70°C before. Things are much quiter now and it should help with 'random' framedrops in games. Ahem. I need to check my GPU next...

So Redout just came out 2 days ago on steam.  Other than Fast Racing Neo (which is Wii U e-shop exclusive and closer to F-Zero), this seems like the closest successor to Wipeout.  I normaaaally wait for indie stuff to drop under $15 or so, but I'm feeling like I better support a genre that I love that died because no one was buying the games.....gonna buy it and I'll report in on the quality:

So Redout just came out 2 days ago on steam.  Other than Fast Racing Neo (which is Wii U e-shop exclusive and closer to F-Zero), this seems like the closest successor to Wipeout.  I normaaaally wait for indie stuff to drop under $15 or so, but I'm feeling like I better support a genre that I love that died because no one was buying the games.....gonna buy it and I'll report in on the quality:

After a couple hours of Redout (and about 30 mins going back to Fast Racing Neo on Wii-U since I hadn't gotten around to playing it much and wanted to compare it), I like it, don't love it, but it's growing on me.  In a lot of ways it's Wipeout, the career progression, the race modes, the track design, the feel of speed.

But it's not exactly Wipeout.  The controls are different, you don't have L/R air-brakes to just slightly jet to the left or right (Fast Racing Neo has them), and the boost system is more like F-Zero where you have a boost that uses energy which can also be used to replenish your shields.  The game also uses an upgrade system where you buy upgrades for your ship to improve the stats (not a big fan of this in an arcade racer), so the early ships have not so great stats.  Also your ships are heavier & more tanky than Wipeout which always felt like floating pieces of paper that could turn on a time, making sharp turns requires turning VERY early and possibly slowing down and then speeding up out of the turn.  The weapon system is also weird where you buy 1 weapon to equip into a race.  The game also has a bit more floaty feel than Wipeout/F-Zero/Neo like your cars aren't as connected to the track, for instance when landing from a big jump it never feels like you're hitting the track.  I blame some of that on having weak sound effects so you don't get the crunch of impact at times.

The combination of all of the above is that Redout doesn't feel like Wipeout and if you go in expecting Wipeout, at first it's not a ton of fun and feels like an off clone.  I popped in Fast Racing Neo and immediately that was more fun and felt like a great F-Zero-ish game.  But after going back to Redout and giving it more time, and getting the hang of some of the tracks and vehicles, Redout is a pretty good futuristic high-speed racer.  It's just that it's its own game doing its own thing so don't expect Wipeout.  It's very fast, the tracks are fun and the career has a good amount of variety.  The AI is ridiculously hard so some of the modes are near impossible and will keep you playing for a while like Last Man Standing where the last car is eliminated each lap.  If you like the genre, when it's sub $20, probably worth a play.  I haven't tried the multiplayer, but from the SP side it looks like at least as much content as one of the shorter Wipeout careers so 4-8 hours probably.  And yeah, the soundtrack is no Wipeout, but that's expected.
