Xenoblade Chronicles is so exhaustingly long. I feel like I go 10 hours between story beats in this game. I am determined to finish it, but I am definitely still confused at how universally praised this game is.

It's a jrpg but exploration focus so the story is in drips. There is a good amount of story and it comes together really well by the end, but there are large gameplay/exploration gaps. Especially in the first half. I feel like the 2nd half starts throwing in more story.

The exploration gets kind of tiresome after awhile, because it only exists for you to walk around collecting 6% spawn rate items that you have no idea of knowing where they might spawn. There are something like 400 sidequests in this game and they fall into roughly 4 or 5 categories. Also, because this was a Wii game and they opted for BIG OPEN AREAs, everything feels sort of... empty. There's very little vegetation and in the big areas you can got a few minutes between seeing enemies sometimes. One thing XBC2 did slightly better was giving you more places to warp to. Also the in game maps can be pretty trash at letting you differentiate elevation changes.

I guess it really was a time/place/lack of jrpgs on the system thing.

With Mixer dead, does it mean Ninja is free to go back to Twitch with part or total of the exclusivity payment he received from MS ?
 :dobbs
No, he can only stream on Chaturbate now.

Not only did he get an absolute fuckload of money to move to Mixer a year go, from what I've read they had to "buy back" his contract...? :lol

As much as he asks to, I won't let him play Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma yet either (haven't told him, but Dark Souls is right up his alley too)... Don't feel any need to wait till he's 17 of course, but there's a time and place for everything... holding on to the innocence as long as I can.   :tocry

All kids are different.  Mine is only 2 but I wold probably let him play something like Bloodborne when he was 9 or 10.  It's bloody but it's obviously in a fantasy setting and there is also no "bad" language, sex scenes, etc.  I would put above some T rated games (especially FPS ones) or anything online.

Though I am reminded of when I worked at the electronics counter at Target and had to deal with a ton of dumbass parents angrily trying to return M rated games they bought for their 10 year olds.  "What do you mean this game called Grand Theft Auto that is rated M for Mature isn't supposed to be for kids?"

Yeah... working at a used game store for long while, saw the same influx of those parents... We'd warn the parents what was all in the game for the most part, but if they were fine with it, we'd sell it.  They've been warned..

I let my son play Baldur's Gate (he LOVES D&D) and it's rated T for Violence, Blood, Sexual Themes, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco... But it's no where near the visual spectrum as other games with similar ratings..  He's much further than me in the game.   :lol   He's on the last chapter and close to beating it!

I remember clearly when Duke Nukem 3D released 'as a new game' I must've been 8 or 9 at the time and my brother 14 or 15 or so.
Before that I had already played DOOM, Wolfenstein, Mortal Kombat and many other games. As a kid I loved to play Red Alert as well and was super psyched when my brother went to the first 'midnight release' of a video game, which was Tiberian Sun.
Back then games looked more like 'cartoons' though and weren't as realistic. As a kid you probably wouldn't like the most bloody and violent onces as they were often more complex than games with less gore.
When Soldier of Fortune released it was the coolest shit ever though, you could shoot off limbs  8)

The only game that ever gave me nightmares was Rygar  :doge

My parents of course tried to minimize the intake of violent games but they really couldn't stop me from wanting to play the same games my brother was.

I don't think Falcom gives their games to overseas companies until after they are done and out. And since their games have a fuckload of text/VA, it takes the localization people a good year+ to localize.

Too bad he was kicked off of Sony. :lol
More 15 hours stories, stretched over 30 hours. :fbm

Although thinking back, a lot of these AAA 12 hours story games were absolute shit, like Order 1886, Ryse, etc.
At least don't sell them at 65€.

[crash bandicoot 4 trailer]

I'm interested in a new crash game. By calling it "4" I assume it's going to be fairly conservative in how different it is from 1-3, but watching this trailer I gotta say I'm not too keen on the masks acting as power-up suits, they seemingly are mandatory for certain sections and go away after, which seems like it will be constrictive and annoying. I'm also wary of multiple playable characters with different abilities.

With crash sliding on vines in the video it is very difficult not to think of all of these things in comparison to Sonic games that feature annoying mandatory power-ups, annoying multiple player-characters, and sliding on rails sections.  :doge

I couldn't get past an hour of The snOrder 1886.  It was a waste of $7 to me.  However, even though not Sony, Hellblade was a great example of this direction.  It told a great story with simple, but fun gameplay segments.. It was WAY more memorable than plenty of other AAA 30-40+ hour games, like AC: Odyssey...

All that padding/filler/bloat... whatever you wanna call it....

I think a short cinematic type of game like The Order can work, but (price aside) it needs to have a core gameplay loop that is more fun than that.
Maybe some gimmick that'd get old over 30 hours, but works fine in a shorter burst.
And yeah, it's a type of game you have at launch, to show graphics, not 2 years into the gen.

So your attacks can be arbitrarily fast, but Mongol attacks can’t be faster than the player can react. That created imbalance early on — just hammering on the quick attack button defeated most enemies, which was certainly not the deep combat experience we were aiming for. It would have been nice to have solved this before Hideo Kojima visited Sucker Punch and tried Ghost combat, since that was the first thing he tried. Sigh.

I don't mind the Batman combat, even though in it there are better and worse examples of the idea.
Latest ACs abandoned that combast style for something more classic, and it ends up looking less fancy as a result.
If you want really sleek/cinematic looking animations, i guess you gotta go for it.
They talk about cancelling animations though, that give me hope that it won't be too annoying to play with.

While it is somewhat of a meme game, it also just got incredibly charm. Despite being barely functional at times. It's pretty much open world twin peaks murder mystery, but with zombies, filtered through the brain of kojima's challenged cousin.

I wouldn't care about the frame drops if the fucking game didn't crash the longer your PC is on or in certain chapters/scenes.

Made me swear off Swery's other products because the PC port is so fucking atrocious I could only get about 3 hours in before going "what the fuck am I doing?" at trying to go to the town meeting and uninstalled it.

Shame, because I binged Twin Peaks to get into the mood for it.

Gathering a mega list of awesome arcade balls to the wall XBLA games for 360.

So far the list is:

hard corps uprising, bionic commando rearmed, spelunky, vf2, VOOT, Daytona USA, fighting vipers, vf5fs. Shit like MvC2 and Outrun 2 have been taken down.

What else rocks that I'm missing?

Hmm... perhaps a trip to Alan Wake would be appropriate for you if want a Twin Peaks vibe without the mega jank?

Did you try DP on 360 or PS3? At least those wouldn't crash on you. I mean it was still a bit of an 0_0 at how optimized these games were, but I'd say the main game was worth it.

I'll also leave these 2 videos as they are pretty neat regardless of whether one cares or doesn't about Swery games

hard corps uprising, bionic commando rearmed, spelunky, vf2, VOOT, Daytona USA, fighting vipers, vf5fs. Shit like MvC2 and Outrun 2 have been taken down.

What else rocks that I'm missing?

Inertial Drift has a demo up on Steam.   It has some unique twin-stick steering/drifting controls, and I really like the aesthetic- gives me Ridge Racer Type 4 vibes (in visuals/music only- this does not play anything like it!).

I've posted before but you might want to keep an eye on Night Runners.

They're trying to go for that late 90s/early 00s car jp car culture vibe but it looks promising. Very Ridge Racer.

Man, the zydeco bowling alley music in Deadly Premonion 2 is amazing. Can't wait.
