I can almost agree with the argument against Best Picture, but what Cameron did is completely deserving of Best Director, IMO.

I think he deserves some sort of award, but his work is largely sub par when it comes to the final picture. Everything is average, drama is average, tension almost non existing, action is average, creation of momentum is average, etc.

He didn't show much skill as a director, as much as he did as a technical revolutionary. For example, The Matrix, at the time made under an average budget by Hollywood standards, managed to bring new kind of special effects, camera work, original and risky story by hollywood stories, with kung fu mixed into a cyber punk world, etc etc Yet nothing happened for the Wachowskis aside from the change to ruin it all with the sequels.

The BIG things that are Cameron's responsibility, are mostly behind the cameras.

Really gotta disagree with the bolded parts. Especially the part about the action. This film had some of the best action scenes of all time. But that's why we have opinions.

The fact that you would call it average is pretty surprising though, considering that the action scenes are one aspect of the film that have receieved virtually universal acclaim.

Well i'm just calling it how it is. Again, i say, i barely remember any action sequence in it. Uncommon amongst Cameron's movie, i still remember mos of Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2, and even True Lies.

Wrika, you're absolutely right. The problem with Avatar is that, aside from the blue people and the 3D, it's completely generic.

Only the plebs are creaming themselves over it. People who are actually discerning filmgoers can tell that it's just average, albeit beautiful, fare.

My problem with A Serious Man, is that i kept noticing how much of its charm was over how clever and funny it was over Judaism. And i know little of the practices of the religion itself, so i ended up watching a movie that although i thought had a lot of charm, didn't hit close to home to me and so i don't really feel like a got enough from it to actually judge it,
