Continuing the Zeta Gundam talk - were Katz and Fa the two most useless characters in the series?  Fa pilots the Methuss which seems to get destroyed every other episode, and all Katz does is be annoying and whiny like Kamille but without the ace piloting skills.

well, let's compare their greatest accomplishments:

Katz
-flew the G-Defenser to support the Mark II

Fa
-takes showers with the two kids on the ship and runs after them naked

I think Fa edges out over Katz since they could always assemble the super gundam before launching.

Fa actually survives the series, for some reason. That's quite an accomplishment considering it's Gundam.

There's no real canon in Gundam.  It can be part of your personal canon if you want, since there's so many deviations to the storyline, and it's an officially licensed novel by Tomino.  You can't get more "official" than being written by the frickin' creator of Gundam.

Well, watching the last two episodes of both Railgun and Sora no Woto this week was basically the epitome of fail-ton. Both were series with interesting premises, some decent work in art and animation, and some great episodes mixed into some kind of pointless slice of life plot lines...all of which was completely slaughtered by a arrogant, kill-crazed villain from out of the blue and a "love conquers all" ending.  :yuck

Here is the new Ranma 1/2 OVA.  "New" as in 2008, released on J-DVD in the last month or two.  Anyway, found it on Youtube.  The sub job is kinda shitty but decent enough.  There's also a similar new Urusei Yatsura OVA that I liked much better (way funnier), but it's not subtitled.

NSFW Warning: Ranma tits in the first video.

Something that isn't a pointless, 500+ episode action series.

Probably start with something like Escaflowne or Cowboy Bebop. Trigun's a contemporary classic of sorts, but Vash's antics and the inconsistent tone, along with inconsistent animation quality, might be a bit grating. If you want to move towards something a bit more weird/surreal, pick up some Kino's Journey, Serial Experiments Lain, and Soul Eater [for the wacked out art style]. From there, if you're wanting something more ordinary and that isn't animu, there's always something like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex or Big O. For something mark on the dark side, there's Paranoia Agent, which is a pretty twisted, cerebral series. There's also shows like Witch Hunter Robin [a sort of anime X-Files] or Ghost Hunters [which is a series of story arcs about various hauntings], Mushishi [a series of one-off episodes about people plagued by mysterious creatures] or go full-animu and watching some like Excel Saga or Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu.

I finished up Yotsubato! volume 9 and reading it, it really struck me how amazing the art is.  This is a series where in theory the art shouldn't matter much since it's a slice of life comedy, yet every frame is really detailed.  It might not be Berserk level (or maybe it actually is), but you compare it to something like CLAMP's XXXholic and it's just night and day.

vs.

Between the art caliber and the writing, Yotsubato! really is one of the best manga running.  Continually impressed by it on a yearly basis.

speaking of mangos, i've been reading Vagabond lately and it was so good till i had to skip pages like crazy for the main character to stop talking to himself and start attacking OH GOD 5 CHAPTERS OF HIM JUST POINTING HIS SWORD AT AN OLD BEDRIDDEN GUY AND ASKING HIMSELF HOW TO BE INVINCIBLE.

still, continued reading till i reached chapter 130 or so, some lonely old man trying to raise some deaf kid. why do i even bother.

If a brother such as myself was to get into anime, what would you suggest

Dude, don't "get" into anime, but I can definitely suggest some stuff you would really like. Nice artistic stuff.

These are all films.

Quote
The second film by director Satoshi Kon and screenwriter Sadayuki Murai recalls Perfect Blue, but Millennium Actress is a more complex, subtle, and sophisticated work that evokes the history of Japanese cinema. After nearly 30 years of living in strict seclusion, the aged film star Chioyoko Fujiwara grants an interview to journalist Genya Tachibana. As their conversation begins, Kan intercuts scenes from Chioyoko's films with her memories of pursuing the mysterious artist she met as a young girl. Accompanied by his blasé cameraman, Tashibana finds himself within Chioyoko's memories and films, alternately observing and aiding the woman he adores. Kon's skillful direction and subtle use of color strengthen the intriguing story: Chioyoko's memories are rendered in shades of gray, with hints of muted color highlighting the overall composition. American viewers will find their appreciation of this shimmering, spiral narrative deepens with repeated viewings. (Rated PG: violence, mature themes) --Charles Solomon

Quote
One of the most ambitious animated films to come out of Japan (or anywhere, for that matter), Perfect Blue is an adult psycho-thriller that uses the freedom of the animated image to create the subjective reality of a young actress haunted by the ghost of her past identity. Mima is a singer who leaves her teeny-bop trio to become an actress in a violent television series, a career move that angers her fans, who prefer to see her as the pert, squeaky-clean pop idol. Plagued by self-doubt and tormented by humiliating compromises, she begins to be stalked, in her waking and sleeping moments, by an accusing alter ego who claims to be "the real Mima," until she collapses into madness as her coworkers are brutally slain around her. Director Satoshi Kon, adapting the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, shows us the world from her schizophrenic perspective: days blur, dreams cross over into the waking world, the TV show blends into her real life, until her life merges with her part and she can't separate the ghosts from the real-life stalkers. Though the pat ending sweeps the psychosis and anxiety away with nary an emotional scar, it remains a smart, stylish thriller and one of the most intelligent and compelling uses of animation in recent years. Though tame by the extreme standards of "adult anime," there is nudity and a few sexually provocative scenes, and the animation is detailed and stylized (if somewhat stiff and jerky by Disney standards). --Sean Axmaker

best anime ever

Quote
Satoshi Kon's third feature (following Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress) confirms his status as one of the most interesting directors working in anime. Tokyo Godfathers centers on three homeless people: Hana, a flamboyant ex-drag entertainer; Gin, an alcoholic former bicycle racer; and Miyuki, a sullen teenage runaway. Their tenuous existence becomes more chaotic when they set out to find the parents of an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve. They scream insults as they confront the lies they've told each other--and themselves--about the past. Yet they remain curiously endearing and even noble. All three care passionately about the abandoned infant, and they love each other, although they're loath to admit it. Kon skillfully uses color to suggest the bitter winter cold and the characters' alienation. Tokyo Godfathers shows that battling the inner demons that led these three characters to skid row can be a more daunting challenge than fighting aliens and cyborgs. (Rated PG-13: profanity, violence, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Quote
My Neighbor Totoro is that rare delight, a family film that appeals to children and adults alike. While their mother is in the hospital, 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei move into an old-fashioned house in the country with their professor father. At the foot of an enormous camphor tree, Mei discovers the nest of King Totoro, a giant forest spirit who resembles an enormous bunny rabbit. Mei and Satsuki learn that Totoro makes the trees grow, and when he flies over the countryside or roars in his thunderous voice, the winds blow. Totoro becomes the protector of the two sisters, watching over them when they wait for their father, and carrying them over the forests on an enchanted journey. When the children worry about their mother, Totoro sends them to visit her via a Catbus, a magical, multilegged creature with a grin the Cheshire Cat might envy.
Unlike many cartoon children, Satsuki and Mei are neither smart-alecky nor cloyingly saccharine. They are credible kids: bright, energetic, silly, helpful, and occasionally impatient. Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki makes the viewer believe the two sisters love each other in a way no American feature has ever achieved. My Neighbor Totoro is enormously popular in Japan, and some of the character merchandise has begun to appear in America. The film has also inspired a Japanese environmental group to buy a Totoro Forest preserve in the Saitama Prefecture, where Miyazaki's film is set. --Charles Solomon

Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) achieved his first international hit with this delightful 1979 adventure yarn. Quick-paced, high-spirited, and loaded with wit, Cagliostro is a dandy throwback to the caper pictures of the '60s. International man of mystery Lupin III stumbles back into the picturesque European duchy of Cagliostro with his faithful and gruff sidekick, Jigen. They will encounter, in no particular order, a runaway bride, a magical ring, an evil count with a dastardly plan, an inspector bent on catching Lupin, perilous rooftop chases, hooded guards with superhuman powers, a well-used dungeon, a counterfeiting scheme, and an ancient mystery promising grand treasure. Lupin deploys an array of Bond-type gadgets, razor-sharp wit, and a surprise up both his sleeves. Despite the hail of bullets, this caper is great fun, never taking itself seriously. Miyazaki's career illustrates how limiting the term anime can be for these films; there are hardly more than 10 live-action films of this genre as entertaining. Far less mean than Hollywood fare, it nevertheless is for ages 9 and up with language and gunplay. The Lupin character has been featured in other anime films, but never as successfully or with as much fun as in Miyazaki's film. The new English-language dubbing is excellent to boot. --Doug Thomas

Many anime fans acclaim writer-director Hiroyuki Yamaga's Wings of Honneamise as a masterpiece, but general audiences may react less enthusiastically. Honneamise is a small country in a parallel world very similar to Earth. Shiro Lhadatt, the least impressive cadet in the air force flight school, volunteers to become the first astronaut in a controversial space program. Training toughens his body, while the priggish evangelist Riqunni challenges him to discipline his spirit. In one distasteful sequence, Shiro attempts to rape her. The next morning he starts to apologize, only to have her apologize for braining him with a candlestick, a scene certain to infuriate feminists. Despite an invasion by a hostile country, Shiro gets into space and delivers a ponderous homily from his capsule.

Wings was made by a group of young artists in 1987, and with a record- setting budget. Art director Hiromasa Ogura's lavish designs blend '80s high-tech with art nouveau, and Yamaga's leaden pacing gives viewers the time to study every detail. Fans of Honneamise acclaim it as a critical meditation on the illusions and follies of the human race, which suggests that profundity, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Finished Ladies vs Butlers. Didn't chose either girl end :/

Finished Railgun. Not bad all together, really liked those slice of life/filler episodes. Sorta butthurt that the ending didn't show any hints of Accelerator or the clones. Just have to wait for the inevitable S2.

Sora no Woto is next.
