I've watched most of the new stuff from this new season, but so far nothing is anywhere close to being as good as season 2 of Astro Fighter Sunred [which FINALLY started up again].

I watched two random shows and one turned out to be crap and the other turned out to be surprisingly entertaining.

one is something with demon in the title -  it's harry potter for animu perverts.  main character is a demon lord or something in the future and a bunch of women at the magic academy want to jump his horn.  bunch of fan service like a loli robot helper an invisible girl that--surprise surprise--accidentally reveals herself completely naked when she botches it  (this is the shit show)

Working - I saw the first episode a while ago and the second one just now.  It's like a parody of an animu while totally being an animu.  There is a main 16 year old male protagonist who joins a family restaurant that is mostly employed with quirky girls and two guy cooks.  One girl is 17, but looks 12.  One girl has a samurai sword.  One girl is afraid of men so she attacks them on sight.  The manager is passive aggressive and touchy about her age.  One of the cooks is gay, the other is probably gay too.  The twist is that the main character is a pedophile.  He outright says he hates anything over 12 years old, except the 17 year old girl who looks 12.  Add in that the girl who hates men has a crush on the pedo and that sums up the humor the show provides.

Working is entertaining for being so shameless but never becomes a bunch of panty shots and weird shit like that.

I've seen both of those and pretty much agree. Ichiban [the demon show] has a really interesting premise and a good basis for both humor and drama, all of which is completely wasted on awful, awful fanservice-a-minute and harem tripe. The second episode is even worse than the first one in that regard. On the other hand, Working, despite being, as you say, very much animu, still has a sort of charm to it that make it bearable and even kind of fun to watch. A definite guilty pleasure, unlike Ichiban which is just guilty pain.

Also, Arakawa Under the Bridge is pretty good. The first episode was just okay, with a few moments here and there, but the second episode was a vast improvement. All the jokes felt fresher, the humor less forced, and overall a much better handled episode than the first. Here's to more of episode 2!

Nice pics Mr. Gundam.  I was there about 14 months ago myself.  Gundam fans think a like :P
Here are my pics from then:

there was no ending.

Quote
I felt like there was more plot going on than dtb1 which was twice the length.

dtb1 = episodic + lots of episodes dedicated for characters like yin or huang, it was slower which was much better since i like watching hei and his two persona. the plot was between these episodes till they reached episode 20 or so where they had to wrap it up (with a silly ending too.)

dtb2 is just the main plot, i like it but yeah, needed to be longer (i guess the ovas will cover some of that) + a real ending or season 3 and this time hei as the main character.

still though, i am actually surprised you liked it, guess i can't troll you now.

Does the manga make more sense of it all?  I'm thinking about reading it one of these days, though I should probably wait until it's finished so it doesn't leave me hanging.

no, manga is after the first season and before the second, it's just hei, yin and the police versus some flower villain, it's awesome but releases are painfully slow.

if season 2 ovas don't shed more light about it then our only hope is season 3 which might never happen.

In my quest to rewatch all of UC Gundam I'm now on Gundam 0083...still kinda a crappy show with really nice animation.

Nina is just a hassle to watch and if Kou had any balls he would tell her to shut the fuck up, but for the majority of the series he acts like an evilbore poster around her, which makes her even more of a pissy bitch.  Then there is Monsha who is borderline rapist around any female.  The humor the show tries to provide is either awkwardness around woman or full on pervert.   Kou falls on the floor trying to eat carrots in one scene and Monsha is trying to sneak a peak at Nina's legs before launching to kill people.  Sweet.

The logic behind the show is also ridiculous.  Kou helps the one armed zeon guy rebuild a mobile armor ignoring that HE WILL KILL PEOPLE WITH IT.  Gato is supposed to be a badass zeon pilot but he constantly spares the unit 1 Gundam and then complains that Kou doesn't have a reason to fight.  I dunno, maybe you want to at least disable the Gundam? or after Kou proves he is capable of murdering Gato's allies, maybe it would be a good idea to stop him from doing it in the future.

But then it becomes cool action with awesome animation.

Question:

What are some essential, top-tier anime films?

What I've seen so far: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Wicked City, most of the Miyazaki/Ghibli stuff.

I'd like to watch more of the essentials. Nothing with uguu or too many tentacles, please.

Anything by Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, etc.).

Sword of the Stranger
Evangelion 1.11, 2.~~, 3.~~, 4.~~
Cowboy Bebop movie if you've seen the series

Sword of the stranger is probably the best animated action film ever.  If you want a good sword fight action movie, definitely check it out.  Millennium Actress is a fantastic ride through the history of Japanese cinema.  Extremely well made.  Eva is Eva but the movies are nicely done so far.

The movies are stand-alone.  They're basically a re-envisioning of the series in movie form.  It's going to be 4 movies total.  Each stands on its own.

Movie 1 is out already in English
Movie 2 is coming out soon
Movie 3 is coming to the theaters probably in 2011, home video in 2011/2012
Movie 4 is probably 2014/2015

But the first movie stands on its own pretty well and is a good film worth watching.

I'm guessing when K-On! aired, ep12 was the final ep.  Especially since it says "THE END" and is a finale for the show  :lol

I thought it was a really good ending.  It reminded me of the good old days of anime when the staff put all their effort into the 10 min finale at the end of the show and the animation, music, directing always took a giant step up to end on a strong satisfying finish.  I felt the end did a good job pulling the story together while giving Yui kind of a final send off monologue about how she's grown.

Definitely my 2nd favorite Kyoto Animation show.  Air being my favorite because I like Xenogears and Air is Xenogears in :uguu form.

Now gotta watch ep13/14 and then I'm ready for S2!  Hope it has as much  :heartbeat as S1 did.  S1 didn't feel like a generic cash-grab.  It felt like a show made by people who care.

I give season 1 two bebpuu~~~ thumbs up

Watched the first ten minutes of Evangelion 1.11.

The main character is the whiniest, pussiest bitch of all time, and he sounds like a little girl. Why can't I have a manly, likable protagonist in my giant robot action movie?

Even that pussy-ass amnesiac Fei was twice the protagonist this guy is.

Then he goes out to fight having had zero training and with seemingly no aptitude or will for combat, and promptly gets annihilated. WTF did those military peeps think would happen?

Spoke too soon. Things have picked up now that the main character has seemingly unleashed his system-ID attack.  :lol

Does he eventually man up, or does he stay a whiny bitch for the duration of the story?

What are Eva fans like?

Well, the more HARDCORE fans try to make everything about it seem deep or have meaning. "Hey, there's a random latin word! WOW SO DEEP."

Back at the height of its popularity, people were making lengthy guides and faqs to Eva's plot and story online, and discussion about it was going around a lot of animu fan circles. Some people thought it was okay, a well animated and interesting mecha show with some cool themes (this is me). Others thought it was the deepest animated story of all time. Those fans are the ones you have to look out for, though I'm not sure if they're still as pronounced as they were back in the 90's/early 00's.

I realized that I'm just not a fan of the idea of a completely uninteresting kid being the one who is chosen to wield humanity's greatest weapon. I like stories where the protagonist is a fucking man (or a really cool woman). Not some kid who got picked last every time for kick-ball.

Evangelion is great.  Like MGS2, I appreciate it when creators just troll the audience in a big budget way.

Rahxephon is like Evangelion without all the stuff that you hated/loved in Evangelion and it was soooooo boring.  You'd think scenes in Eva where characters stand around for five minutes doing nothing are boring, but I find that to be hilarious.  Rahxephon tries to be serious and it put me to sleep.  I literally fell asleep while watching Rahxephon because it was so boring.

I was thinking about it yesterday.  Some show with mechs or just things people control like mechs had some "quirky" female character that would randomly say "lala" or "nahnah" something like that randomly.  It was like uguu of that show.

HA

it is Rahxephon.  from wiki

Quote
Quon Kisaragi is a mysterious young girl who speaks the first words of the TV series and is shown meeting Ayato in episode 4. Her standard expression of surprise or agreement is "Ra-ra" (or "La-la") and most of her dialogue is cryptic and musically themed.

that pissed me off watching the show

The greatest anime of all time and you can get it for 13 dollars.

Eva is real good, but that's because Anno is a fantastic director above and beyond the talent of 99.9% of the people working in the anime industry.  Anno is like the P.T. Anderson of Japan.  He makes really good character pieces with a unique style.

Eva is not some deep sci-fi story.  What it is, is a extremely good dramatic piece about a kid who hates people because he's never been loved.  The ensemble cast is also really good as they are explored.
A live action Eva without the robots would be an oscar-nominee heavy drama.  But the robots are an essential trigger for the changes in the characters and a driving force to bring pressure to the situation and fuck everything up all the time.

imo, Eva is the most important TV anime out of Japan since Gundam because it showed that anime can do serious adult drama about hard topics on the calibur of high brow hollywood character dramas

It's not my favorite anime.  But it's definitely in my Top3 with Eureka 7 and Millennium Actress.

Rahxephon was cool until i couldn't be bother with this shit anymore (i think it started where he went to the other dimension/world whatever).

Eva was very interesting due to the themes and EVERY CHARACTER was fucked up.

Is it the greatest anime of all time? fuck no

Is it an interesting take of a story with some robots added? yea.
