Fractale 4 was good, but every ep is becoming worse than the previous one :X  I feel like the pacing is trodding too much with everything being "MYSTERY" and not much actually happening per ep.  It wants to be Ghibli meets Last Exile, but the plotting of the thing so far keeps it a notch below.  The first ep was the best.  The show can still become really great, but it needs to start picking up the pace.

Level E 4 was lolz, good stuff.

Also I just found out Madoka is only 11eps.  Wtf.  Why do all the really great shows that seem like they should be 26eps long end up with stupid 11/12 eps run lengths which barely gives the plot time to breathe.  I can't believe the show is almost halfway done already.  I hope they don't pull a Jellyfish Princess and have a non-end in hopes of a S2 at some point.

I had no idea they made an ova to show Major's epilogue.  The epilogue in the manga was really short so they had to stretch it out to fill the time of the anime, but it was still cool to see that stuff animated.

It's a shame that they'll never show everything between it and the last season's ending.

Watched an episode of this new OVA called .hack//Quantum. I watch all of Sign and liked it and the first few episodes of Legend of the Twilight and hated it, so my experience with the franchise is fairly minimal. Having said that, I really like the first episode of Quantum. It has a much different feel than either of those two, almost feeling like [at times] something like Summer Wars or Kamichu [a group of friends on an adventure]. The animation was pretty good, outside of some stuff CG here and there. Definitely looking forward to the next two episodes.

Quantum is the end of .hack iirc.  Takes place after the PSP game which takes place after the others.

When it's done I'll probably give it a watch.  I watched/played all the other ones but skipped the psp game cause it was mainly a filler side story budget project for kids.

Quantum feels like a combination of the overall qualty of Sign [but without the heavy, heavy melodrama] and the lightheartedness of Legend of the Twilight [without being offensive]. The last few minutes of the first episode does suggest that it's going to take a bit of a serious turn, but that shouldn't be big problem because there's only two episodes left.

I love how Madoka Magika is basically Shinbo and Shaft going "How can we make this even more dark and unrelentingly depressing" with each new episode.  :lol

Episode 2 is the weakest so far. And episode 4 was better than episode 3.

AHAHAHA HOLY FUCK

A KENSHIN: OVA FAN. MY FAVORITE ANIME.

The series is nothing LIKE the ova's. It's shounen but really GOOD shounen (until after the kyoto arc that is). The anime is filler after the kyoto arc because the author/artist went back to the manga and completed the story. So the anime had nothing to continue with.

I'd say just read the manga. It has the entire RK anime without the filler, PLUS the ova's story, PLUS, the aftermath to the ova's story -- the Revenge arc, where Enishi tries to kill Kenshin and everyone he loves --  and actual ending.

Aside from One Piece, it is my favorite shounen. I HEART RK.

The series isn't even close to being the same thing. It stars Kenshin as Vash the Stampede fighting the Meiji period equivalent of the Gung-Ho Guns. Of course, that doesn't mean that it's bad, just not an animated version of an Akira Kurosawa movie.

Guess I'll pass on the series.  Wouldn't want to ruin my love for the OVAs.  It's the best anime I've seen since Ergo Proxy came out years ago.

I wish I could get into manga, but I just don't keep up with it.  I don't like reading on my macbook, so piracy is out of the question and all those books will be expensive and take up what little space I have left on my bookshelves.

but if I could, I'd read that and the Berserk manga.

Ergo Proxy is the shit.  I've watched the whole series like 4 times, which I never do with anime.  I think I'm due for another rewatch, actually.  I love the shinsen-subs version of it, since they explain all the philosophy/religion references.

*looks up seinen on wikipedia*
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinen_manga

right on the money.

out of the shows I've seen that are listed on the wiki:
Monster-- Probably my second favorite series, but I can't rewatch it because it's 70-something episodes long (even though every episode is good and I don't remember there being much, if any, filler.)  also, knowing all the twists and story hurts it...I knew nothing about the show other than it's name and basic premise going into it, so every episode was a surprise.

Gantz-- it's a very overdramatic show with some very annoying characters (like the main character's friend who never shut up about saving everyone and having everyone work together), with a story that hints at all kinds of awesome stuff but ends up giving you blue balls.  I was still very entertained by the ridiculous violence, the video game-ish set up where they fight some seemingly unbeatable and unique enemy every episode, and the promise of an explanation for what the fuck was going on and why.

GITS, Berserk, Akira-- love all 3, these don't need an explanation

where do I go from here?

yeah, I need anime.  I feel like I've watched a lot of the best "more mature" (shudder) anime.

Armored Trooper Votoms

seems like a lot of mecha/war, but the plot sounds great.  is there a lot of character development or does emphasize epic mech fights?

The past week or so I've been rewatching The Big O. It's not the first time I've done this, but each time I do I gain an even bigger appreciation for it. It's the kind of show that slowly reveals more and more of itself with each viewing, shining a light on the skill that went into this production.

Tonight I watch two episodes back to back. "Beck Comes Back" and "Winter Night Phatom". The former is one of the funniest episodes in the series and really cements Beck as Big O's Joker. It's got some really great scenes in it, not just from a comedy standpoint, but also scenes that provide a bit more insight into the world and the characters in it. The latter is probably one of the best in the series. The noir feel is at its strongest and the focus on Dastun is really good. And it's got such a sad ending, an ending that wouldn't be nearly as good as it is if the characters were more shallow or less interesting. The fact that the ending is so sad is a testament, once again, to the skill of the crew that made this show.

There aren't many animes out there that I could honestly say are better and I've seen a lot of anime.

I can definitely appreciate what it's going for here and that it's actually a radical change of pace from what 99% of modern anime is, but...that still doesn't mean it's something that I really want to watch.

On a different note, I watched some Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust again recently and it I had to ask "Why isn't the director doing more stuff?". So I looked him up. Well, turns out that he's actually done a lot of stuff and a lot of it really isn't that good. I guess a better question would be "Why isn't he directing more stuff as awesome as Bloodlust?".
