What the fuck?  Is the game about an African slave traveling to the west and working at a cotton plantation or something?  What a horrid title.

I love the game's aesthetic.

I liked Heavenly Sword's aethetic too, but I got bored of the repetitive gameplay in the DEMO.

Glad I searched for an OT, even though this thread isn't getting much love lately.

I'd seen the ads on Penny-Arcade, and ignored them. Namco does not have much oomph this generation, so I was ready to just write this off the same as Dead to Rights 5 and Soul Calibur XII. But yesterday this had a featured video on Xbox Live, so I watched it. Gorgeous game is gorgeous. The combat/platforming looks like it may be fun. Yes, it's an adaptation of the Monkey King, which has tremendous cultural lineage, and the game is being written by Alex Freakin' Garland. Gokuu-as-Riddick? Yesh, pleashe.  I went from having zero interest to big-time interest. Hopefully it's not ill-founded hope.

i think it would be best to play the demo before getting your hopes up.

The thing is though the demo is only on PS3 at the moment.

Because Heavenly Sword was fucking GARBAGE. F-tier God of War clone with the worst character in a video game, Kai. Female Gollum was an awful idea.

I think a lot of people have a stick up their butts because this is a multiplatform game from a company that previously made a PS3 exclusive - an exclusive that seems much worse by comparsion to Enslaved.  They're obligated to hate.

Heavenly Sword may have sucked ass but judging by the demo and all the positive previews, Enslaved seems like it might be worth the money......as long as Ninja Theory doesn't fuck it up and put in a ton of annoying QTEs like they did with Heavenly Sword.

And Kai was the only interesting thing about Heavenly Sword.  It was like having Bjork follow you around with a gun.

The demo didn't have any QTEs.  A lot of people on gaf trash the demo, but I thought it was alright for the most part.  Like Heavenly Sword, the best part of the game was when you weren't playing it.  Platforming is even more automatic than Uncharted, combat is boring and dull, and the game has a really loose skin look where things don't mesh together.  Yet it still managed to be interesting.

It is actually coming out the same day as Castlevania.  Both are games where the 'game' part doesn't interest me much.

I'll download the demo tonight, hopefully along with the free copy of Tomb Raider: GoL mentioned in the "online deals" thread.

The hate is probably coming from Heavenly Sword being overhyped and underdelivering. And again from them "jumping ship" to become a multiplatform developer. You know, being a PS3-exclusive dev house this generation is like being an original Xbox-only dev last generation. There's no way to make it work unless you are getting a steady flow of money from the hardware manufacturer, and even then it is unlikely that you'll see a major bump, big sales to the point of being able to grow. You're more likely to just become a 2nd party house, destined to eke out an existence tethered to the good graces of one fickle corporation.

FWIW: Playing Conan (speaking of 2nd rate God of War clones...), I have to do some horse-crap QTE at the ending of each stage of the final boss, so six-multipart QTEs after the most grueling end boss fight I've encountered. Mid-level monsters have QTEs which can be ignored (Like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed) but big bosses cannot be passed without them, failing them gives the boss an extra hit on me, and restores the boss to 1/2 health. FFFFUUUU....

:piss QTEs :piss2

For me it seems they haven't learnt a goddamn thing from their last game. Decent to alright story, somewhat serviceable gameplay, technical issues (though being fair they are using UE3 which runs like shit on PS3 but if the 360 version isn't good then...).

Kinda disappointing and its gonna get worse since they are now doing that DmC game.

Demo was fun, but every complaint listed here so far seems valid: auto-platforming is auto, mashy combat is mashy. The visuals, voice acting, and the promise of Monkey's cloud-riding, er, hoverboard riding sequences are enough to keep me interested, as well as some hope for Alex Garland's interpretation of the Monkey King myth.

I kinda liked it although I have a feeling most people on here will detest it. It's not a very technical fighting game or platforming game but then I tend to not like the very technical aspects of either of those two genres. It does have sort of a prince of persia 2008 meets uncharted kind of feel.

A lot of the gameplay is definitely on auto-pilot but the main draw of the game seems to be spectacle and story, and character interaction.

I'm either getting this or Castlevania on the 5th.  I'm leaning towards this since while the action isn't great, it is still interesting.  Castlevania is all around looking sketchy.  Some people are trashing the demo, others are saying it is good.  Times like this make me wish I had gamefly.

The controls are really wonky. Usually games that have such scripted jumping have much smoother controls. I don't know why he has to do that clunky pause before every jump.q

how does that work?

I checked the site and it says the trial is 10-days.  I was thinking about using that whenever there are a bunch of game coming out.  I keep thinking about going for gamefly like I did netflix, which ended up being a great choice, but one game out at a time is $16 a month seems weird when I can just buy a game for that price in less than half a year.  Plus the general problem I have with not owning games is that I get weird urges to play the most random games in my collection.

Not really surprising to be honest since UE3 runs like garbage on PS3.

Yeah, that's a little bothersome.  It's even worse than Uncharted 1 & 2 and I thought those games were way too forgiving with its auto platforming but this still seems interesting to me.

Not a day 1 or anything like that but I definitely want to give it a go.

The game is pretty fun. It plays very much like Heavenly sword, but since it's not trying to be a martial arts epic, the slow pace of the combat works well with the character since its supposed to be this big strong brute force kind of guy. Combat works even if it's not extremely engaging, an interesting aspect is the use of Trip to help out by the use of a decoy for example that distracts your enemies, it's NT take on the whole dynamic of a duo in a combat scenario. It's not quite as involved as in Prince of Persia but hey.

Platforming is merely visual flair to help you get into the world, and the character of monkey, and it helps that its so automated in scripted sequences like the opening. It's very much Uncharted 1 kinds of straight forward platforming, it's not Tomb Raider if that's what you are expecting.

Game looks very good, runs pretty good, but most importantly what the game does have is personality and character. It feels like a different game, that has different characters, and it's interesting. Not one hour in and i'm invested in the Journey already, in these characters, be it because of the voice acting or whatever, it's good stuff.

I like it, i don't think it's amazing but i'm gonna see this one through.
