None of those is better than Heat, Collateral or The Insider. Yes, including the first two, which have been massively overrated through the years. Freidkin's filmography is so choked with pure shit I'm surprised anyone takes him seriously or holds him in any high regard. He put out some decent work as a studio hired hand in the 70's, but overall his track record pales in comparison to even Coppola, who also seemed to make two meh/terrible films for every good/great film through the years.

Fuck, Coppola made Jack and is still more worthwhile than Friedkin. :tbslol


Edit - Also, the first French Connection pales in comparison to the sequel. That was Frankenheimer, right?

Collateral blows, man.  I just couldn't get into that movie for a bunch of reasons:

- Jamie Foxx flirts with the girl who just happens to end up being Tom Cruise's target?

- A cab driver beats a hitman?

- Tom Cruise's performance overall...I think people were like "awsum, Tom Cruise with gray hair and playing a bad guy.  CRUISE POWA" but he was really mediocre.

The Insider is awesome, I'll give you that one.  I think Heat is increeeedibly overrated.  All the soap opera subplot shit with Al Pacino's family and stepdaughter was crap.  Ditto the stuff with DeNiro falling in love with the bitch from Judging Amy.

And yeah, FC2 was Frankenheimer.  I still prefer the first, though - that car chase!

So yeah, he has made a lot of crap (so has Frankenheimer).  I would argue Mann hasn't made as many legitimately bad films as Frankenheimer or Friedkin is just 'cause he doesn't do as much directing.

Friedkin had a good thing going for him with French Connection and The Exorcist, then Sorcerer and the fact that he was a raging douchebag of James Cameron proportions (but without the track record to back it up) essentially killed his career. And good riddance, I say. The Exorcist today is a hollow, hoakey experience and The French Connection, while good, is not the classic, timeless masterpiece it's fans like to make it out to be. The fact that today it is remembered primarily for the car chase and nothing else doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

By all accounts, Mann is as big a douchenozzle as Friedkin.  There was a Colin Farrell interview not so long ago where he bashed the fuck out of Mann for being a diva.

I'll just say the best of Friedkin's filmography is better than Mann's best.  And let's not even talk about Frankenheimer.  Ronin is the type of movie Mann wishes he could make.

Mann always comes across like an articulate, down to earth RESPECTABLE FELLOW in every interview/commentary/etc. I've seen with him. Friedkin on the other hand can do nothing but bemoan the fact that he's still not getting massive paychecks and snorting coke out of hooker's snatches. Have you read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls? Almost everything he says in that book makes him sound like a fucking asshole, and it's coming out of his own mouth.

Also, Friedkin's commentaries SUCK.

Also Friedkin's taste in cinema makes Willco seem like an art school cigarillo. He goes on and on about how all his peers in the 70's were making faggy little art movies while he was the only one smart enough to make studio movies. Look where that got him. Scorsese is still getting massive budgets to make kooky throwback studio flicks while Friedkin has to rub pennies together to make a halfway acceptable indie horror flick. Or direct episodes of CSI.
