That seems strange, unless the unhappy people were reporting on their conversations, but the article makes in sound like they were independently tracked  ???

What do you consider small talk?  If they're telling you about their day then I dunno crossreference with your own day.

Not really people are happy to talk about what they are interested or vested in. The more deeper the better. They only placate other people with small talk because it is being 'courteous'.

For me it overhearing small talk. Like when people talk about cake displays to try and extend a conversation. fyl.
I think I am polite but distant since at work I'm all business  8)

Banish small talk. Everyone should immediately initiate deep philosophical conversations when they meet. This will be epic..

"Hello."

"Hello."

"Why do we live?"

"Life is but a vapor, to live is to feel the oppressive forces of inevitability and helplessness. We live so that we may come to terms with these things and accept them."

"There is much thought in what you say and I concur with your observation. To live is to accept death, and to accept death is to accept the beauty of life. Would you care to come to my apartment and have sex?"

"Yes."

So it's not going good then? Marianne was just telling me about this new herbal tea she got in China town.  Its suppose to increase you electrolytes or something, anyway she said after just 3 months on it she's never felt better!  Maybe you should try some?  I'll get the name of it from Marianne the next time we talk.

Well I started out like you and as a borderline aspergers dude I got to the point where I was comfortably flirting with girls. You can do it man!  Whenever you get into a workplace just take it one day at a time and don't be afraid to make fun of your awkwardness at first
...
but not in a self pity way.  Hmm its kinda hard to explain.

Facts: http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2010/03/24/small-talk-big-hindrance-to-happiness/

Quote
Then Dr. Mehl compared those results against the study subjects’ happiness, based on self-assessments and the opinions of people who knew them.

unfortunately, self-assessments are unreliable

people will self-assess what they think will be more accepted/look best

As I have experienced, substantive discussions and conversation are the most rewarding, but finding these discussions is exceedingly rare. So the pursuit of happiness through conversation only leads to the disappointment of not finding a good satisfying conversational partner. Everyone is talking about the weather, and trying to push them outside that comfort zone leads more often to hostility than to creating a good talk.
