evilborians of ireland

irish-bore (if it even exists), i need your help!

on sunday i am off to ireland for a week. :swisscry it's a business related trip, and unfortunately i won't be in dublin, but cork (which i heard is kind of boring, but i have no idea). the thing is, i'm still gonna have a lot of leisure time and the ability to take free taxis wherever i want to go.

anyone been to cork or have any tips to share about the city? i'll be in a group of probably around 10+ people a lot of the time. none of us have ever been there before so restaurant/bar/museum/sightseeing/shopping tips would be very welcome.

cormacaroni, i'm looking at you!  :tophat

Yeah, Kosma is in Cork as far as I know. I missed his exit scene so not quite sure what the level of his butt-hurt is, but I suspect it's pretty low by now.

I'm Northern Irish, and grew up during a period when folks didn't do a whole lot of traveling between North and South. So I think i've spent maybe one afternoon in Cork my whole life :lol I hear there is a castle of some sort! Sadly, no, I don't remember it being very exciting. Ireland is not where you go for excitement, unless of the guns-and-bombs variety.

I'll ask my mum tonight if I can get her on Skype.

My best friend was born in Cork.  Unfortunately his family emigrated here 20 years ago, however I think they still have a house in Cork.  I'll have to check, I know there is a fine Guiness brewery there which gives great tours.

St Anne's Church

The tower of St Anne's church is one of the most distinctive sights in Cork. It dates from 1722, and the 120-foot climb to the top is not to be missed. While up there visitors can try ringing the bells. The tower is topped with a golden weather vane in the shape of a salmon, and has clock faces on all four sides.
omg that sounds awesome.

Crawford Municipal Art Art Gallery

This is one of Ireland's best art galleries outside Dublin, housed partly in Cork's 1724 Old Custom House. It hosts visiting exhibitions and its permanent collection has strong Irish and British works, and local Cork artists too. There is also a good stained glass and sculpture section.
omfg.  :omg

St Fin Barre's Cathedral

St Finbarre is said to have been the founder of Cork, and put a monastery here in about 650AD. The present cathedral dates from 1879.

THE founder of Cork?!  :hyper

Univeristy College Cork
Many of the buildings date from the mid-19th century as the college was founded in 1845, and there's also an art gallery, the Lewis Gluckman Gallery, which displays work from the university's collection.

If I remember my PBS documentary correctly, Saint Anne's Cathedral is right across the street from another Saint Anne's church.

Also, Saint Finbarre made us laugh as that is my friend's brother's name.

Cork  is home to Beamish, the original brewers of genuine Irish stout, which has a prestigious history dating back over 200 years. You can visit the brewery to find out about this famous drink, and try the stout yourself with a free tasting.

Beamish > Guinness imo, it's close anyway

I guess my friend's bro lived in Dublin for that summer and that is where the Guinness factory is, but I'd check out the Beamish one if I were going to Cork.

Sounds like Cork is a place for good times

Is it near the coast at least? I would think that visiting any Irish coast would be nice to see and photograph worthy

This.  Everyone I know who has seen a match live is hooked.  I don't know how they don't kill each other in that sport.

I don't think genital warts are airborne, so it should be a minimal risk.

I just saw this thread, and I live in Cork!

There's probably not a huge amount to do here alright but I'll try to come up with a few suggestions anyway.

In terms of Restaurants, you might want to try Amicus (I hear the cheesecake is good here), Milano's, Puccino's, The Boardwalk, Fenn's Quay, Isaacs or Jacob's On the Mall. I hear The Market Lane on Oliver Plunkett street is good too. O' Conaill's Chocolate is worth visiting too.

There's plenty of good pubs. I like An Bróg myself, they play a lot of alternative and rock music and the place has a lot of character, I wouldn't go during the day though. Other good pubs are The Franciscan Well, they brew a lot of their own beers there and have a garden where you can sit out, if the weather is nice, which it has been for the last few days. Abbot's Ale House is good too.

If you're in the mood for something classier, you could try The Long Island, SoHo or Suas for cocktails.

For shopping you might to take a look at Brown Thomas for designer stuff. And the English Market for a mor ecclectic mix of unusual foods and various oddities.

For art, The Crawford Art Gallery and the Glucksman are worth a look and admission is free.

If you have time to travel for an hour or so down to the coast you can see some nice views and as it stands the weather is very beach-worthy, by our standards at least!

There's also the Fota wildlife park, which might be of interest.

YOu can see a list of upcoming gigs here: http://www.corkgigs.com/ - Not too much this week, it seems.

If I come up with anything else I'll add it in. Have fun.

Oh and the Demonym is Corkonian. lol
