Also, story by Rick Remender is a good sign, assuming any of his stuff makes it into the actual game. I get a bit of a Fear Agent vibe from this ('alcoholic pirate'...)

game looks like a lot of fun, but i hope there's a way to turn off the player character's quips - they got annoying after about ten seconds in those videos, even with barely being able to hear them over the dev talking

Yeah, it's been surprisingly under le radar for something that Cliffy B was publicly stroking his Peacemaker over a year ago and is now nearing launch. Either it's a marketing slip-up (read: they're covering their ass by not spending much on it, so when it doesn't sell they can say "we knew it wouldn't sell"), and/or the game has serious problems.

At the very least, it doesn't appear to take its overblown machismo seriously, which is one of the things I dislike about GoW.

This is going to be completely win... I usually pass over the non Epic-developed games and wait for stuff like Gears, but I think I'll probably pick this up. If the scoring system is as good as it should be and the multiplayer is solid, I can see myself playing this for a long time. Also, the Gears beta never hurts.

Anyone else planning to buy it? We should make a list for some netz hotness.

It's definitely tough to launch a new IP late in a gen. I think if they just show off the game like in the promo videos then I think they have a shot. You kinda have to market this game almost like an old school in your face 16 bit product. Don't fucking get artsy with it. Embrace the dumb. Like when the advertising was all cheesy and the commercial screams this game is so bad-ass.

The other thing is I think they said the game has no competitive multiplayer. Just horde mode stuff. That's a pretty big omission for this genre for a game that isn't Mass Effect or something. The masses who buy these games will pass on products if they can't imagine themselves playing it a few months down the road. (whether they do or not. It's a psychological barrier)

Hopefully it turns out well. I've gone from not interested to quietly excited for this one.

There is no competitive multi in the sense of killing other players in tdm or objective modes from what I understand.

I don't know... I think a lot of people will play it. EA marketing power + Epic fanboys = potentially huge sales. I'm excited just to play it among friends, I think it could have some staying power if the scoring is deep enough and Epic continues to support it through DLC and whatever.

Edit: I just remembered it comes with the Gears 3 beta. Massive sales success confirmed.

Yeah, the GoW3 Beta pack-in is a good point. It's a good way to get a lot of copies of the base game out there. But there's no way people will be paying for DLC to get traditional competitive deathmatch.

Also the central mechanic of the game seems to be the manipulation of enemies using the grappling hook. I don't think that would translate well into traditional competetive arena based multiplayer.
