That was fine but goddamn has all the marketing for this been completely terrible. I have a feeling this is going to do way below expectations.

They were giving out free hamburgers at E3. I refuse to pay fucking $8 for a hot dog at the LA Convention Center so I consider that part to be brilliance

E3 doesn't have the bacon-wrapped $3 hotdog vendors anymore?

I think its pretty neat. It plays a lot different than most shooters. You are way overpowered against the normal enemies. So it kinds of feels like a cat playing with a mouse. That's where the "kill with skill" thing comes in. Because you can just beast on them, its fun to find creative and different ways to kill them. Most shooters struggle with replayability outside of mp because the sp is just based around getting past difficult parts. Once you get past that part you generally don't have a huge desire to replay it. This game goes back to the arcade roots of you can do it better. Looks like it will have lots of leaderboard support obviously to compare how you play with friends. Looks nice. Seems to control well. I think they've delivered on what they promised based on that short demo.

Just played the demo. It's pretty good, better than I was expecting. The full game could be really awesome if the scoring system is balanced, varied, and just generally well-designed. I got a 9885 score after a few runs; I'm not sure how people are getting 18000+, but I really hope they haven't already found exploits and shit. I'll throw it in my Goozex queue when it comes and decide if I want it later.

This kinda reminds of Vanquish, which is of course a huge positive. Hopefully it turns out well!

Oh and it looks like the characters and dialog will be indescribably awful. That was some of the worst shit I've ever seen.

edit: got 10k+ but it didn't register on the leaderboards :maf

Fun game though.

I can't take Steve Blum as the lead VA.  All I'm going to be thinking of is "Dwarven crafts!" and Spike Spiegel.

Also, this game is one more great example of why all games need to offer full sound controls over music, SE, voices, etc.

Played a little bit, looks a bit adolescent power-trippy but whatever. It just kind of dumps you in without much instruction on how to use the whippy thing. Will spend some more time with it tonight after work.

alright demo.  not a fan of that it basically uses gears of wars controls, mainly how the spring handles.  also how context sensitive actions are here and the general feeling of being grounded and restricted.  but it was pretty fun and watching high point runs (posted below) it looks like it could be fun if the levels get more complex.

and yeah, not digging the style and general dialog.  it's kind of obnoxious.

Nice, I didn't realize the time bonus was so huge. If this game hits its maximum potential it will be the best FPS this gen by a landslide.

That vid looks sick. First Person Gears?

Nah, not slow enough and not enough waist-high cover to hide behind as you kill tons of bullet sponge enemies.

For the first time, I'm debating whether or not I should get this on PC or 360. The controls for 360 are amazing, and normally I'm the first to claim FPS work better on PC. Also, Gears 3 beta. Fucking tough to call.

It'll probably be a GWL game though.

I'm almost positive it'll come out on Steam. I think I'm getting the 360 version anyways.

EDIT: Are all copies of the 360 version the "Epic Edition" that comes with the Gears beta?

Played through the first Act. It's fun.

Basically you use the killshot stuff to unlock special abilities for your guns or leash. It's obviously a pretty over the top shooter with lots of set piece moments in it. It basically moves from setpiece to setpiece actually. It looks pretty. Playing on the PC but with a 360 controller. I don't like how you have to hit A to climb over stuff. That bit feels weird especially since its all about sliding around and free movement but otherwise it controls fine.

Obviously I won't be playing it a few weeks down the road but it seems like a great rental type of game. And there is definitely replayability and that sense that you want to do better after you know what to expect in a given situation.

If a fun game. I think its neat.

But the dirty little secret of me buying games nowadays is that unless a game is an rpg, or a big GTA RDR style game, or has an MP element I will playing for months afterwards, I don't buy $60 dollar games. I'll wait for a price drop or buy it used or just rent it.

It's darn fun. And the anarchy mode seems like something that would be fun but at most I'd be playing it for a couple of weeks. Of course it just depends on how people value their games.

i have been sharing this secret with you for a while now

the only time i break is when i can combo discount through amazon credits or somesuch, like i did with lbp2 and dead space 2 (averaged out to $43 each, and i still sort of regretted paying that much, nothing in either game that i wouldn't have enjoyed just as much six months later for $20-25)

i can see buying a multiplayer-focused game on day one (like battlefield 3, which is day one for me) because the communities tend to dry up in a few months, but a single player game is the exact same game on day one or day one fifty

Got up to like Act 4 last night. It's still fun. Very pretty game. I still have problems with the controls sometimes though where you have to hit A to climb over something or sometimes where you think you can go or slide but because there is a slight height change you can't. Those bits are frustrating. The controls and level design could definitely be improved in a sequel.

Not that it matters in a game like this but my observation on the story and dialogue is this. How odd.

I mean its odd because its really bad which isn't surprising but its bad in an odd way. Like when you see a Japanese game like this you get it because its a different culture and they just don't get our culture 100%. And other times when you see bad its just because its low budget or talent doing the writing and voice acting which is understandable in its way. But this is really bad in a deliberate way. I mean its not even satire like Duke Nukem or something. It's just purposely bad. Which is a weird concept.

Got up to Act 6 last night. Not much left and will probably finish it tonight.

The game is endearing. And the campaign is a very nice roller-coaster. The important part is that even if you aren't really that into the whole do the trick shot stuff its still really fun. I honestly don't really play it at a high kill shot level but even doing it just enough to power up the weapons and buy ammo is enough for me to find it fun. The base mechanics are strong enough that its fun to do even if you aren't a master at the game or anything. The game isn't very hard either. Playing on hard but it feels like the default level to me.

And the dumbness. It's so omni-present and over the top that its actually charming the more you play. I've definitely enjoyed the game, the more I've played.

This is another one of those fucking games that gives you a checkpoint right after an encounter, instead of right BEFORE the next encounter. So when you die you get to listen to conversations and cutscenes all over again and the ammo you could pick up last time is no longer there for you.
