Venom isn't in because the current Venom is absolutely nothing like the Eddie Brock Venom people are requesting.

That really has no bearing on the game.  Venom in Spider-Man 3 bore no resemblance whatsoever to the Mac Gargan Venom in the comics of the time.  I mean, comics Nova is dead right now.  Jean Grey is certainly dead (at the moment) and is not in possession of the Phoenix Force anymore.  Shuma Gorath hasn't been seen in five years and last we saw him he looked completely different.  Magneto's costume is completely different now too.

I think Marvel is fine with it being different from the comics as long as it pushes a version of the character they care to push, and Eddie Brock Venom is clearly still their go-to in other forms of media.

Well, it was just confirmed in one of the interviews that Marvel flat out said no to Venom.

Additional system notes from the Japanese UMVC3 website:

Quote

1 – X-Factor can be activated in the air.

2 – The attack and speed increases for each character while in X-Factor have been adjusted. Additionally, the damage reduction minimum while in X-Factor has been decreased from 50% in MvC3 to 35% in UMvC3, and Hyper Combos performed during X-Factor will now be subject to damage scaling.

3 – An upward exchange (this was sideways exchange in previous builds, and may be a translation error) during an Air Combo will take away 1 bar of your opponent’s HC Gauge.

4 – When you launch the enemy in the air with a Special Attack, hold the button down and your character will automatically super jump to follow the launched opponent. (This can be turned on or off in the Options menu.)

5 – The window for Aerial Exchange Counters has been adjusted, making it easier to land one.

6 – If you land a Snap Back attack on an assist character, similar to the landing it on the point character, the assist will become unavailable for a short period of time.

7 – It will no longer be possible to block during an air dash.

8 – The rate of HC Meter gain has been decreased by 10%, to 90% of what it was in MvC3.

9 – In MvC3, the amount of hit stun caused by assists was fixed, but in UMvC3 hit stun caused by assists will also be subject to hit stun deterioration during combos.

10 – For characters who have 8-way dashes, the speed on their down-back air dash has been slightly decreased.

It does...I ordered it from the Capcom E-Store and they shipped it early.  They did the same thing with vanilla MvC3; I got that the Friday before release, but this time it's even earlier.

Finally got to try a lobby with three people.  Spectating works great and there was no lag with the players I was with.  You actually have to toggle spectating on, however, which I found stupid.

I'm getting completely annihilated in most matches (get me a corner and I'm done), but learning a lot and finding who I want to stick with.  Although he feels stiff and slow, I am liking Ghost Rider.  Was able to shut down a lot of long range stuff with his normals, especially crouching H.    Also am having fun with Rocket Raccoon and Nova.  I think the only new characters I don't care for so far are Dr. Strange and Nemesis, although that's just from messing with them in training and not from seeing them in action.

Have already seen some amazing Vergil and Firebrand stuff.

This is difficult to say, since I've played so few people online.  It's going to be the same or better.  Others elsewhere are saying better, but until everyone has it this can't really be judged.  It's a good sign that there's no problems with spectating though.

These Vs. games will never be as Street Fighter is to me.  I don't take them seriously and see them as "second-rate" fighters.  Fun to mess with.  I usually get my ass kicked but that's okay.

How much time I put into this game and improve is ultimately going to boil down to how good KOF XIII's netcode is.  If it's good...this game isn't going to see as much play time.  :P

I've only played arcade mode once; it was the same as before.  Not sure how that Galactus mode is, and even though he is available, I don't remember seeing an option for it!

Mission mode is back again.

Basically even the UI feels like MvC3, with some remixed music and different background graphics on the menus.  Everything feels the same as before, only now lobbies have spectating.  Still no option to save replays.

Well, that's what the quote is driving at: the best defense is offense.  The situation is the same for everyone: defense in Marvel is unreliable; it's just not possible to expect to be able to block all that stuff --lightning fast left/right mix-ups, instant air overheads, multi-option resets, all leading to full combos-- so the idea is to try to create a gameplan that has you in a defensive position as little as possible.  Getting hit should tell you that you need to work on your offense more.  Sort of a broad concept, but it's the most valuable one with regard to learning the game.
