SMF 2.0 Final was released this past week... so if the board shuts down or goes wrong, you know why. I might lock the board up while I do some backups and general fuckery...

Add a solid snake emoticon while you are doing the general fuckery :-*

So my wife and I adopted a puppy last night.

It's a Labradane (Great Dane and Labrador Retriever) mix.  He's 3 months old and weighs 17 lbs.  He's apparently going to be huge.  Any tips on training him would be appreciated.

Currently we are giving him a light tap on the nose when he chews something wrong and we hand him his toy.  I'm taking him out immediately after feeding him and giving him praise when he poops outside.  If I catch him pooping or peeing I scoop him up mid business and take him outside to finish.  I haven't gotten a crate yet but I heard it's a great way to potty train.  Any comments on that?

DUDE WHERE ARE THE PICS!!!?

Congrats on the small horse, mupepe.
Thanks!  From what I've read he'll be at least 28 inches tall on all fours and least 90-100 lbs.

Apologies for the bad quality.  Both are bad quality and one is a picture of my wife's phone's screen while she was looking at the pics on the shelter website and the other is one I took last night when he was too busy exploring the house to really sit still.  I'll get better quality ones later...

His name is Apollo :heartbeat

We've been talking about dogs and I wanted to name a boy Zeus or a girl Athena.  i also either wanted a Shiba, Great Dane or a Labrador so when I saw him and his name was Apollo and he was a Great Dane and Labrador mix I knew it was meant to be.

Apollo is beautiful :3

We took our dogs out constantly. Like when we had two puppies, it was every 45 min when I was home and sometimes they'd still have an accident in the house. Didn't rub their nose in it or beat their ass or anything, but I would shame and guilt them while cleaning it up and incorporate "outside" in there. We also had puppy pads by the door on the tile and they were praised for using that, and with it being by the door, it connects the door to going out to potty. It was a convenient place to pick them up mid-accident and set them on the pad to finish, like you've been doing with taking him out.

I tied a string with a bell to the door handle and would jiggle it when asking if they needed to go outside, and eventually Meiko started pawing it herself when they needed out. But I mostly did it because they don't bark. My parents dogs would always bark or "whisper" (which is a very handy trick to train dogs that bark lol "No.... Whisper...") when they need out.

We had crates and kennels for the dogs, which are awesome if the dog likes it. I always put old pillows and sheets in there. It's basically a luxury hotel. No toys or bones or anything because crate means sleep. And I very rarely put them in there while being punished. Sometimes I had to because I was cleaning up something they destroyed, but if you link it to punishment, they won't use it and they will be pissed if you put them in it, including barking/whining. We have a small kennel we got when they were babies and a huge kennel that fit all 3 dogs, and Kobe won't let me put the little one away. He loves that thing so much and is pissed because I took it out of the bedroom. He's been protesting by taking half of my side of the bed.

It's easy to teach them tricks with food, but I start them very young wanting to do tricks for praise (Kobe's an asshole, so I won't scratch his belly until he does his trick instead). They just seem to respect us much more when tricks aren't solely tied to food. Meiko will just do tricks cause she loves us, and she's the one that can sneak outside and will listen to us to stop and sit so she doesn't run away. Kobe however, is an asshole. He's laying on my feet right now though :3

As far as chewing, pick up as much of your stuff as possible. Shame and guilt and replacing with their own toy works well. I hope I won't guilt my kids as much as the dogs, but they get upset when I'm upset, so when I pretend to have my feelings hurt by their decision to eat my shoe, they slink away in shame pretty quick. Meiko will even come make up with me after. But if we yelled at them, they just did it more to spite us. Damn shibas...

This ended up being really long, but I just love dogs so much :heart There's nothing more rewarding and adorably awkward than teaching an 8 week old puppy how to sit and high five. :3

cool!  thanks!  i just went home during my lunch break to check on him and walk him.  He peed twice.  Both times as soon as i took him out the back door.  I made sure to praise him.  I also took him for a walk.  He's so lazy!  He made it like a quarter of a block before he just wanted to sit in the grass.  And then when we were about 3/4 around the block and almost back to the house, he just gave up.  he just laid down in the grass and I had to go rub his belly and tell him we were almost home before he sluggishly stood up and walked home.  The only time he ran in front of me and pulled on the leash was when we were about 10 feet from the house and he ran for the door to get in :lol

I'll give all that a try.  He's very obedient.  If we tell him a few times about a specific object he'll drop it and won't try it again.  It took about 5 times of me telling him no when he was trying to get in the trash before he just gave up for good.  He hasn't touched it since.

That pup looks so nice and fun  :D

Hey guys, do you have male friends that call just to talk? I have one who does it all the time and I just don't get it. If it's not important, just text me. It's 2011, I don't want to stop what I'm doin just to talk to you.
:D thanks

and no.  i had a few close friends I used to do that with, but haven't in years.  And it was more or less catching up and shit.  Nowadays I only call friends if it would be too much to explain in a text or if I'm doing something and calling is easier.

My favorite dog I had as a kid was a black lab.

Probably my favorite breed because of it, I love labs.

My parents taught me at a young age to never mess with an animal while it's eating. ???

Yeah, that's what I figured.  I assumed he's just being a little bit shy right now.  He's opened up a lot since last night and is a lot more playful.

We do that too, nothing mean but we'll pet them and ask if we can have a bite of their food. After we got Kobe, we would feed them out of an oversized bowl so they wouldnt be snippy with other dogs over their bowl. They aren't weird about their food because of it and share like no other. I'd feel comfortable with a small child being around them while they're eating because they don't know to be protective over food.

My mom always buys them their own chew bones and they end up chewing the same bone at the same time anyway. Same with their food and water dishes - they still only use the same bowl. Meiko will tell me they're out of water or they are hungry, I'll get them more, and she either let's Kobe go first (because he's her baby) or they'll both have their face in the bowl at the same time.

Doesn't mean I won't teach my kids to leave dogs alone when they're eating because some dogs are hateful. I've never had a dog that did that though.

Good advice in general, but if you train your dog you know at least yours can be trusted even while eating.

never mind, there was an extra endl line character in the file where the results where printed, which made matlab insert an extra column into the matrix it read in.  Better run it all again.

Anyone else work in retail manning tills and find it annoying when people pay you by dropping the cash on their side of the counter and expecting you to reach over and take it?

Not only am I unsure if their intention is for me to take the money or they're just placing it there so they can count or rifle through their wallet some more, I also find it rude and slightly demeaning just expecting me to fetch it from their side. Why can't everyone just place the money in my hands?

How do most of you pay at the counter? I know most people aren't intentionally rude when they do it, but nevertheless, it's still annoying.

i never do that,  always place change in your hand or if you're doing something, place it on your side of the counter.

just to be clear, i don't mind when people place the money on my side of the counter, it's when they put it in front of themselves and can't be bothered to push it a little towards me indicating that I should take it that I get annoyed.

Hand to hand. Most cashiers have it down where there is no physical contact.

As a customer, I hate when the cashier inspects my shit in the middle of the transaction. Guy at Walmart slowly read both of my Father's Day cards for my dad and my FIL and then gave me a total, all while I stared at him with my wallet hanging open waiting to count money and a line was forming. So when he asked me if one was for my FIL or step dad, I proceeded to inform him they're both my dads. Very awkward after that, especially considering the conversation that followed between my friend and I.

Hey guy, protip: scan my two items, get me a total, and while I'm counting out change, read my cards.

When I worked in retail hell, I made it a point to never take any cash money or check that wasn't handed to me.  A typical offender was usually some sour faced bitch who probably hated making physical contact with poor people.  If she wanted to get her shit and go, she had to pick it back up and hand it to me.  This sparked a mini-revolution, with my behavior starting to spread to other cashiers until I was transferred to the electronics department.

I never scanned what people were buying either.  I consider that shit private.  In general, my focus was to get people's shit rung up and bagged up real quick like.  I couldn't care less what people were buying.  I just wanted to have the line move along.  As a result, I netted a few positive reviews from customers.  As much as people say they want customer service, they mean fast service.  Unless you drop the money that you owe on the table.

If you were really too good to pick cash up off the counter, you would also be too good to work retail.  Pick up the cash and collect your $9.25/hr.  :smug

I never sniffed over 8/hr working retail.

Yeah, but TEXP is probably a better worker.

That and TEXP's customers never got threatened with a use of excessive force via giant purple dildo of doom.

So we're considering cancelling our cable. Charter sucks, our Moxi blows, and they've raised their rates by over 40% in the last year.

Could we live without cable/dvr/hd/my big fat gypsy wedding? I just don't know.

So we got a free trial of Hulu Plus, and we can stream that through the PS3. We already have Netflix through the PS3. Is Hulu all that great? Are there better options?
