My wife's dad was hospitalized this morning, here in Japan.

In the USA, my mom was hospitalized last Friday, and is not recovering well, so I'm cutting my time in Japan short to go visit her.

Last night I had a dream that she'd died instead, and for a while after waking up, I was still thinking she was dead, and all the crap I have missed the chance to talk about, to get straightened out between us. I'm feeling lucky to have such a clear reminder about what's important, but Jesus-Christ-hopping-on-a-fucking-crutch, did this really all have to happen a week before I start a new job and am in the middle of an international move?

Pretty shitty day today. Left work to rush to the hospital earlier today. My uncle has been hospitalized all year with an aneurysm; it was lodged right near the brain stem thus making it near inoperable, so the surgeons and doctors spent months preparing and getting ready for the big day. The surgery happened on Monday, and seemed like a success. But sometime Tuesday afternoon a blood vessel ruptured. He's on life support and the family met to decide what to do; looks like we're going to donate the organs, but as his state deteriorates time is running out in terms of being able to donate them.

The surgery was so high risk that it felt as if this was inevitable. I almost felt separated from the events as my dad and his brother and sister discussed things with the doctor. But when my uncle's daughter (my cousin; 14yo) showed up I realized that for some time I had almost forgotten about her, and seeing her crying and literally collapse was the ultimate punch to the gut. She lives with her mom (my uncle's ex) and I almost never get to see her. Most of my family lives in Detroit, it's hard to get together with anyone

Then I went to visit my grandma, who's in hospice (cancer). So yea, shitty day.

Jesus, PD. That is horrifying. I'm sorry to hear so many of us are having such bad luck.

I've realized that, as bad as things are, I am feeling lucky to have a chance to see my mom while she's still alive, happy that I've got all next week to use as I wish before my next job starts, and the financial freedom to travel, as well as the support of my wife to do so. I feel like I "won the wife lottery." She's also volunteered to have them move to where we land in California, and she'll help look after them both, since it is likely my mom will never fully recover.

There's a lump in my throat, has been for weeks. At first it felt like I swallowed a hair and it was in my throat, but eventually it started to grow enflamed, like a weird sore throat. I have acid reflux so I took some Zantac and the pain went away almost instantly - within a few days. But I could still feel something in my throat. I plan on seeing a doctor for it, pretty nervous.

My real problem is that I like her a lot. I never actually liked a girl this much. She isn't usually bitchy and apologizes over her stupid remarks. Its gotten to the point where I'm not as comfortable around her as I was before, its never really "Napoleon Dynamite" awkward just not as fun as it was before. For my case, the type of girl I usually sought out was not the type of girl with whom I could form a lasting relationship.
