I'm rooting for everyone above the cigarillo line. Anything south of Germany is bitch football and needs to be removed as early as possible.  :maf

the stigma surrounding football in America makes me think their team is shit. Do they know it's a contact sport?

Just sayin. Barely half of Europe can remember that football is supposed to be a contact sport these days.

GO US! Will decide backup team when the time comes. It's usually France, but their shenanigans getting in may have put a touch of a damper on that.

Odds are Netherlands or Australia will get a touch more fervor this year, and also the England team.

Can not wait. :hyper

I don't remember the particulars (as far as the context in the game itself) but Henry had an obvious handball at a pivotal point that wasn't called on. France went on to win and qualify. Ireland petitioned France and FIFA to have some sort of rematch (even Henry said it would be fair), FIFA denied the request.

same

Outside of USA, I like to root for my ancestor's countries. Not England this year, due to being in the same group.

I like USA's retro unis this year.

I was off my colcannon that night, let me tell you.   :-*

To recap - the problem with the Ireland situation is the rejigging of the rules to suit France.

All first team places went through to the finals.

<snip>

Sounds like they graciously gave our lads a shot at sending the frogeaters home for a much-needed bath a round or two early but some cheating French scum prevented it.

Why would a Saudi root for Brazil? I was in Jordan last year during the Confederation Cup and all the Jordanians were rooting for Brazil then too-- with jerseys and flags even.  I don't get it.  Your teams suck so you root for the best team so you can pretend to know what winning feels like?
Yep that explains it exactly.

I saw Japan getting mauled by the Ivory Coast - they were undersized at literally every position. It seemed like the Ivory Coast had 11 guys of exactly the same height, speed and build and so did Japan...but shorter, slower and punier. They had no chance. You can imagine the Japanese guys looking at the opposition at the kickoff and thinking 'Fuck this, we can't play these guys...it's like high school kids against a pro team'.

Negative football sucks ass.  That's why so many Americans think soccer is boring.

Defense just has too much of an advantage in today's game.  If I were in charge of FIFA, I'd make drastic changes to the offsides rule or maybe even eliminate it completely.
