On a serious note I did watch the game. Probably the first full soccer game I've ever seen in my life.

Not knowing anything about the sport or soccer strategy in general, it seemed like England was the better team and they were constantly down there in scoring range but they just couldn't convert. The American goal seemed especially lucky.

USA USA USA

I played soccer in high school after some guys on the team dared me to. Way harder than basketball; good lord doing suicides on a soccer field fffuu. Today I'm not some big fan of the game but I respect the sport.

Italian Americans become ostentatiously, obnoxiously Italian every four years during the World Cup.  Then new episodes of Jersey Shore come out and suddenly they're just white people again.

Same applies to Italian Canadians. See no further than GAF's ForzaItalia and Manics.

Italy aren't very good this year though. I'd love to see them knocked out of the group stages, but that's doubtful.

So far all teams that have played weren't impressive. Still waiting for the first contender for the cup to stand up.

the first games are usually like that, no one wants to try to be overzealous and dig themselves a hole. doesn't really kick until the second set of group games. then again, a lot of good teams have yet to play.

anyway, good for Ghana! Bring on Germany and the Aussies.

England as a team were shite - again. Green's mistake wouldn't have mattered if we'd not played like a bunch of utter donkeys.

Usual reaction from the press "bu bu bu we would have won if Green hadn't cocked up" - lol, we were devoid of ideas and people simply didn't perform.

I'll agree that England didn't impress but I'd wait 'til they've played their other group matchs before completely writing them off. I really don't see them playing in the final but if Lampard catchs fire I can see them reaching the quarters or possibly even the semis depending on the bracketing.

Yeah I should've phrased that better. I don't expect him to vie for the Golden Boot but he can step up and help control the flow of play on attack. Ball control, sharp distribution even the odd threatening run...he could really transform the side.

Australia doesn't have very good odds against Ghana and Serbia so I don't think they'll make it to the next group, especially with cahill out for the ghana game due to a red card.  otoh, USA has to play against Algeria and Slovenia which are long-shots so I might cheer for the country I'm a citizen of.

I wanted to post a Youtube video of all Bendtner's misses from a terrible game he played against Burnley this year, but amazingly nobody seems to have made one.

It still boggles me a bit that a striker -- whose entire purpose is to score goals -- can have goalscoring as a weakness and still be starting for his national team.  Yeah, I know, Emile Heskey.  But still.

This one's for Mandark:

http://2010fifaworldcup.tumblr.com/post/696789590/conservatives-obamas-policies-are-the-world-cup

Quote
Glenn Beck: “Barack Obama’s policies are the World Cup.” In an extensive rant on the June 11 Glenn Beck Program, Beck purported to explain how President Obama’s policies “are the World Cup” of “political thought.” Beck stated, “It doesn’t matter how you try to sell it to us, it doesn’t matter how many celebrities you get, it doesn’t matter how many bars open early, it doesn’t matter how many beer commercials they run, we don’t want the World Cup, we don’t like the World Cup, we don’t like soccer, we want nothing to do with it.” Beck stated that likewise, “the rest of the world likes Barack Obama’s policies, we do not.”

Beck added “those who like the World Cup … they’re the most likely to riot,” commenting that by contrast, “I haven’t seen the baseball riots.” He later said of soccer, “I hate it so much, probably because the rest of the world likes it so much, and they riot over it, and they continually try to jam it down our throat.”

G. Gordon Liddy: “Whatever happened to American exceptionalism?” Discussing soccer’s popularity in the U.S. on his June 10 program, G. Gordon Liddy asked, “Whatever happened to American exceptionalism?” Liddy noted that “this game … originated with the South American Indians and instead of a ball, they used to use the head, the decapitated head, of an enemy warrior.”

More good old fashioned racism at the link.

EDIT: I just noticed that, since the health care bill debate, "jam it down our throat" has become something of an obligatory phrase for any conservative railing against vast liberal conspiracies.

If you win a match you get 3 points, a draw gives 1 point to each team and a loss gives 0 points.
The 2 teams (of 4 teams) with the highest points in a group (8 groups) continues to the next round.
