i have never understood the reasoning behind these kinds of drastic changes
"Hey, you know that really cool superhero, the one that's been around for nearly 70 years in the same familiar iconic costume which is ingrained in pop culture and has appeared in countless media outside of comics, the one even grandparents recognize? That character would make an awesome movie. Let's change everything about it."
i can understand tweaking it a bit to give it depth on film, as in spider-man, but stuff like this just smacks of filmmakers and costume designers thinking they can do better than the design which helped make the character so popular in the first place
