I am becoming increasingly alarmed about Square Enixs direct involvement with Deus Ex 3.

Maybe Square-Enix can bring some true RPG elements to the series without turning it into a horribly streamlined piece of shit

Love the realtime shots.  Fantastic art direction (much better than the original games).

Of course, I was never concerned about the visuals.  Let's hope they actually nail the rest of it.

I'd say it's an improvement in art direction too, though that may only be because DE1 looks like ass now and so the art direction couldn't be fully realized because of the graphic capabilities.

... what?

Have you played Deus Ex? How can you say MJ12 Commandoes or the huge mechanical Bots or the Hand sculpture in the lobby have bad art direction?

Hong-Kong streets?

They looked realistic and pushed the Unreal 1.0 engine pretty hard.

Oh yeah I forgot the pinnacle of art direction for you is MGS2 Tanker scene.
MGS2 was not the pinnacle of art direction, but it sure as hell looked better than Deus Ex (artistically and technically).  Don't get me wrong, Deus Ex is one of my favorite games ever made, but I never thought it was a good looking game.  Back in 2000, it was already quite dated.

I loved Hong Kong back then, but it's just a bunch of boxy structures with random Chinese signs sticking out.  Nothing special from a design standpoint.  That said, I also realize that the engine and time period of its release prevented the game from really delivering what they may have had in mind.

Now we have stuff like this, which I think looks fantastic...

Yes, there is definitely some Blade Runner influence in there, but that was also true of the original.

Man, that's insulting.  I don't feel that way at all.  I actually don't care for a lot of Japanese art direction, to be honest, but I also recognize quality work when I see it.  There's great work coming from studios all over the world.

I played Deus Ex on its release date and fell in love with it.  Of course, it ran pretty poorly back then.  Do you remember how low the framerate was for many people on the Statue of Liberty map at the beginning?  Christ, it was bad.  Also, when large explosions would trigger I was always hit with lots of HDD access.  I used to sit there and think "damn, that explosion must have been awesome as my PC couldn't handle that!!!".  Of course, it really wasn't when I finally saw it.  :P

Amazing game all around, though.  That was right around the time when I had played Thief II, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex all within a year of each other.  Late 90s PC gaming was the best shit around.  :heartbeat

I'm a mega huge fan of the first game but I'm completely open to a new style and gameplay. As long as the game is good then I'll be happy.

That's how I feel.  I read some posts on gaf and it's like people won't accept anything that isn't the same game from 10 years ago.  It's like if people complained about Tron Legacy not looking like the old film.

So far I'm liking the style of this game.  I mean, the first thing I didn't like about Invisible War was how it looked.  The style of the trailer and screens look great here.

True. Walking down that hallway might actually be more fun and interesting than 12 out of 13 chapters in FFXIII.

Instead of heading straight for the door at the end of the hallway, you can look behind some of those doors and who knows?  you might find an orgy.

Not hating on the game but my expectations are pretty damn low. It's being developed by Eidos Montreal, a new studio with team that has no track record.
The fact that it is a new team is one of the reasons I have hope, actually.

NMA went insane over it, yeah.

I really like the way the trailer looks, very Blade Runner, so I've got some hope for the finished product. Not much, but a little bit.

I was just worried you were one of the guys that spat on Deus Ex and 99% other WRPGs but the moment SQUARE-ENIX drops a FMV in the game they go drooling because JAPANESE ART DIRECTION!!!

It doesn't appear to be Japanese art direction, look at the credits at the end.  The credits for the game itself are all Western names and even the trailer credits (which I'm guessing are representative of the in-game FMV team) have Western names for the script, direction, editing and concept art, though the actual CG production team appears to be Japanese.

They got SE's CG team to do the CG because it's something they're pretty good at, but the actual development of the game is handled by the team at Eidos Montreal.

Why some people are trying to make this an East vs. West issue is beyond me.

Yes, but even within the CG FMV cutscenes the high-level direction, scripting, design and art direction is apparently done by a Western team.

I think you could argue that. The Deus Ex future is dark and gritty, heavily inspired by the future as portrayed by works like Blade Runner and Neuromancer. Modern-futurism I see as being more like Minority Report, with everything having a slick and clean, almost Apple-inspired, look.

I loved one, but a pretty CG movie is never, ever going to be enough to make me buy a game. I doubt that montreal will pull off the complexity and depth of experience the old game afforded. I really like whatever Ubi montreal produces, visually speaking, but gameplay tends to get short shrift.

Also, seriously, I know the "two bombs were not enough" is a reference to something a US politician said, but it's still offensive to have trotted out. The phrase "Japs," too. If some politician had started throwing out statements about "distinguished black fellows will always be slaves" or "feggits are made for beating" it is still not something that would be tolerated on The Bore. Hell, there are word filters for it.

This shouldn't be, either.

So, I want to play through the original Deus Ex, but I have such a hard time getting through that first stage. I don't know, the gameplay just isn't very fun. How does the game change from its first moments? It seems like a really slow-starting game, but so was Mass Effect, and it became amazing by the end.

DX1 is my best game ever.
IW was utter shit.

I have a good feeling about DX3. I give them the benefit of doubt and remain hyped.

Aww come on, IW wasn't that bad. If it had any other name it would've been praised.

I played through it about a year ago and I agree. It's not a great game and it's a bit on the short side, but it's still pretty fun.

It's been a while since I played it and maybe my definition of 'middling' differs from y'all, but I thought the game was good (enough) for the time it lasted, but it didn't have any particularly interesting hooks that made it stand out. At this point I suspect it's too dated to be enjoyed and it's legacy is just being a disappointment.
