There have also been a wave of impressions from various sites.  Everything sounds ULTRA DOPE, especially the stealth.

Likewise GR.

Anyone know if this features a character Creator or do we have to stick with ol' shades 'n' goatee here?

It looks like the PS3 version in that video, but is there any word on console differences? Is the PC version a port?

I love the way they're doing the levels, with multiple routes that reward exploration. Contextual highlighting is very nice as well, makes it a lot easier to see what you can interact with and it doesn't look overly obtrusive.

Also, bonus points for not forcing combat. :rock

Eidos needs to seize control of Square-Enix and dump those twin money pits for good. To no ones tears.

Eidos people have been in charge of technical strategy for SE globally for some time now.
Here's an interview with the former Eidos chief technology officer who is now CTO of Square Enix as a whole.

looks great

also confirmed recently that Nixxes is handling PC version of the game.  They made the PC versions of K&L2 and the last two tomb raider games, and both of those were amazing jobs.

The Eidos team has also said that they're working closely with Nixxes to make sure the port is a good one. And Nixxes actually co-developed the engine.

Of course, according to GAF this is the greatest tragedy since the sacking of Constantinople.

gaf is distinguished mentally-challenged.  the glow is overdone, sure.  but that one thread is like an onion of stupidity.  things like complaining about the deus ex franchise not leading on PC when Invisible War was an Xbox game poorly ported to PC.

I didn't even know what a nixxes was until yesterday, but their ports have been amazing.  They even have a separate config window before launching the game so you don't start out in 800x600 and must restart when you change a graphical setting.

Bull-fucking-shit.  This "contextual highlighting" counters the very idea of the original Deus Ex, where you were able to explore and experiment your own paths.  I'm not some "PC elitist", but the best part of Deus Ex was figuring shit out for yourself, and not having someone holding your hand.

I was hyped to all shit for this game until I discovered this highlighting bullshit......

They added an option now to turn off all the hightlighing and a few other on screen elements (objective locator, takedown/cover prompts).  The hardest mode now has highlighting off by default.

dunno, but in the announcement they keep saying it was because of the complaints that they did this.  They still basically say that it's meant to play with highlighting on.  Options are good, and all that.

This week is "PC week" of coverage or something where they're releasing info on tweaks to make it feel 'right' on PC.  Mostly interface and control tweaks.  PC version has an inventory bar mapped to the number keys instead of a radial wheel (but there is supposedly normal controller support as well).  Also more minor but neat things like inputing door codes using the number pad and the scroll wheel actually scrolling through in game media.

First video goes through some of that.  Second video has a nice bit showing off Detroit and gives that DX1 feeling.

Sounds like a slightly uneven mix of "ZOMG THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME" and "Hmm...this is kind of annoying".

On the other hand, it seems that even the issues that were present weren't enough by a long shot to keep the guy who played the game from being totally excited about it.

yeah, this is the first Eidos Montreal game but I believe they're already working on Thief 4 (or Thi4f, whatever).  Eidos seemed to put a lot of faith and support behind them, and Square-Enix too.

what leaked is apparently the press demo that most impressions from a few weeks ago were based on.  It's ~10 hours and a fraction of the game (supposedly, it mid-20s).  Should still give a good feel for the game, and most of the impressions have been positive.

I'm curious about how old the leaked version is.  I think it is before they added the option to turn off the orange highlights.  The game is still like three months away.

Game controls, looks, moves like a 6 year old game.

Sure enough, this game doesn't need to look like Crysis 2, but the dated animation to the characters is off putting since you spend so much time looking at them. They animate terribly, and sound terrible, the V.A is pretty bad.

What's up with the music sounding like it was ripped straight out of Mass Effect? I have my doubts about this game now. Presentation wise at least.

Will try this leak on the weekend after my test. The story about the guy that leaked it is pretty funny

Google translation can probably be attributed to why I found it funny

Played it for about an hour this evening. Seems fun. Seems like a throwback game which is good in most ways and bad in a couple.

The animation and voice action is pretty stiff. The graphics aren't good either not that I care. Even if it is stuck at low, I have a feeling its not going to look amazing even at high settings.

The combat is as expected perfunctory. You're not going to confuse this gunplay with a top of the line current shooter. But of course Deus Ex isn't just about its combat and that's where this feels good. It nice to have a shooter with an inventory system and the augment stuff seems to be in place. The third person camera takes a little getting use to once you adjust its fine. I think I'll play through the whole of the "demo". I played with the 360 controller and it seemed perfectly fine with that.

AI is really sketchy in this. At least on the default level.

I was in a room with about 4 guys so I just started shooting them with from long distance with a tran gun. The other people would see them get tran-shot. Run over to try to wake them up, occasionally actually do it, and then I would shoot them both again. Imagine this repeated process with about 4 guards and its like slap stick comedy routine. They never thought, hey I should take cover or let me go look for the guy who keeps shooting us and putting us to sleep.  :P

The reality is in these type of games people don't actually really want smart AI. They want predicatable AI that they can exploit and feel like a bad ass against but this was a bit much. Hopefully they address this somewhat as the game nears release.
