Yeah it was hot as hell here. We had to take our cat to the vet and I sat in the car with it running when we picked her up just to try and keep the car at a reasonable temp.

Fucking humidity is worse in GA as I'm sure Biff would agree with. You guys in Wilmington are usually luckier than the rest of us but it sounds like today was rough everywhere.

I can attest that I've been in 47c heat in Vegas, and it was more pleasant than 40c with humidity in Tokyo. That said, hot is hot, and no fun for anyone.

i've been coming home from work and pretty much going straight to bed so that i can get up early and get some work done before the worst of the heat and humidity sets in, also been taking frequent breaks (although that is nothing new

)

luckily i paint inside, so the only real misery i get is from moving my equipment from apartment to apartment and from spraying (can't run the ac during that half of the job, and i have to wear a respirator)

i really feel for people that have to be out in it all day, glad i'm no longer on a crew working new construction jobs

Speaking of well-read, we went to the Biltmore House today. That guy had 24,000 books! The library was quite a sight with over 12,000 hardbound, delicious first edition novels

The guard told us he read about eight books a month. I thought it was interesting reading the titles of the books. One group that struck me as funny was seeing three volumes of 'Great American Families' beside six volumes of 'American Indian Tribes'

America had existed for 50-75 years but somehow amassed three volumes, while the indigenous people had only amassed six.

And then I got sad thinking about how many tribes listed in those six volumes that I likely had never heard of :'(

It was still hot as fuck and humid in Asheville, but I'm sure it was nicer than it was in Charlotte. Going to stay inside tomorrow and watch the soccer game

It's said that Kyoto is worse because of the location in a valley. Apparently the air just sort of settles, no breeze, and the moisture clings to you. Plus if you go into any of the shops, they've got the A/C cranked so hard it will freeze your sweat into an icy shell around you, and then when you go outside again it melts, building up layers of salt and grime and sweat sludge.

Tokyo humidity is doubleplus insane because every tiny room has a huge-ass air conditioner blowing hot air out into the streets 24/7. If you walk on the sidewalk in front of a big storefront, it's like walking into a fridge. If you walk BEHIND that same store, it's like the jungles of 'Nam after the napalm dropped. The ambient temp in Tokyo has soared over the past 20 years due to the proliferation of air conditioners. :doh

Some places have started using these new heat pump things, where the hot air is used to power various heating elements in the house rather than pumped out into the street. Bring it on!

It's even worse when your job has no air conditioning. "Hey, we're gonna install this awesome A/C in the library room that nobody ever uses! What about the teachers' room? Nah, they got like two shitty old electric fans that are facing the vice principal's desk. They're good to go!"

Meanwhile, my wife will complain it's too cold here in 90 degree-plus Atlanta because of these "weird" central air-conditioner-things that everyone has in their houses.

Really? It got up to like 94 and I thought it was pretty oppressively humid all day long. Then again I spent most of the day in the a/c'd out shop, except for having to make three trips to the dumpster with all of the damn weekend trash. That shit sucked and probably put me in my bad mood for the day.
