These eastern conference playoffs are gonna be great. They were really good last year too but you'll have several legit contenders (aka best team that isn't the Warriors) this year as opposed to LeBron vs. EC field so I'm excited.

The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Carmelo Anthony are pausing talks on a possible contract agreement unless the franchise makes a turn back toward pursuit of Western Conference playoffs contention, league sources told ESPN.

The Lakers had been leaning toward signing Anthony for the rest of the season -- until losses in four of the past five games left the organization and Anthony's camp wondering if it made sense to bring the veteran into an unsettled environment with suddenly so little chance of making the playoffs, league sources said.

I don't understand all these pundits worrying that LeBron is risking his legacy by spending his last few seasons screwing up the Lakers. Makes him even greater in my eyes.

Saw this in the comments of a Yahoo sports article:

It's gonna be funny this offseason and next season if/when the Lakers fail to sign another star and get stuck getting whatever garbage players Lebron is still friends with.

"While Buss has been an ardent backer of Walton, she has also empowered Johnson, who has been less resolute in his support. His efforts have all worked against his coach rather than with him. After delivering James in July, Johnson ignored the pleas of the coaching staff that he retain Brook Lopez and Julius Randle. Instead, he signed controversial and limited journeymen JaVale McGee, Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson."

This has been a rough season to watch as a Lebron fan.  :snoop

Which is part of the reason for my lack of posts in this thread.

Unfortunately its hard for me to see things improving that much. It's basically the Kobe 2.0 situation. Star player on big contract on a crappy team. That's not exactly the hot spot free agent destination.

This is why I wanted him to go to philly. Those young guys are ready compared to the Lakers who are seasons away. The decline process has begun yet he still has to do all the heavy lifting on a squad like the lakers.

When Zion Williamson goes into beast mode I can see those comparisons to younger LeBron. Only plus like 70-80 pounds.

He's got that same absurd hard dribble move that LeBron and Kawhi have where dudes can't take it away but desperately try for some reason even as they're being knocked away from the force of the body hitting them.

With the playoffs already out of the picture, LeBron James and the Lakers played for pride in Sunday's 111-106 win over the Sacramento Kings -- and to appease the mythical basketball gods.

"I would never cheat myself," James told Spectrum SportsNet in his on-court interview, after recording his eighth triple-double of the season (and 81st of his career) with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. "I know we're out the playoff race, but if I'm on the court, I'm going to play how I play, and I play to win. So, I will never cheat the game.

"There's such a thing called 'game gods.' And they're watching no matter what you're doing, and it's our obligation to go out and be a professional, and that's what I'm about."

After the contest, James expounded on his approach for the 32-41 Lakers, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

"When I'm on the floor, I've got to play the game no matter what our circumstances is, no matter how many minutes I'm out on the floor, through the basketball gods, I've always respected the basketball gods," he said. "If I'm on the floor, I've got to try to play as hard as I can or do something to affect the game and not cheat the game. So, if I'm on the floor, if I'm in uniform, then I've got to try to make things happen.

"Not saying I'm going to make every shot, not saying I'm going to make every play or not have any turnovers. But just try to make an impact on the game and, like I said, I was on the floor tonight, and I was able to make a couple plays to help make our team win."

"Memphis was the only team that showed me any consideration," Noah tells ESPN.com. The Grizzlies promised a small role. That was fine with Noah. He needed to build his confidence back almost from scratch.

He injected energy right away. At his first practice, Noah dunked on rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. and screamed in celebration, "Don't do it to him like that, Sticks!" he and his coaches recall. (Noah's high school nicknamed him "Stickman" because he was so gangly.)

Never understood Hollinger being with the Grizz. As one of the original advanced analytic guys, they never seemed to follow that path when constructing the team.

As far as Walton, I could have went either way. On one hand, he was given three seasons and that's longer than some coaches are given. But he wasn't responsible for the poor team construction which put together a lot of pieces that didn't fit. My issue is that I fear they are very much likely to bring in a player coach who handles personalities rather than implementing and establishing a system.

WOO PLAYOFFS. Was kind of hoping for a Heat miracle, but alas. Should be a pretty good playoff, lots of interesting matchups and interesting teams. Dubs likely got it but who knows.

Lakers are way more of a dumpster fire than expected, they may have scraped in if not for the injury/AD bait. Handing the team to Bron may work, but they'll likely need to go back to having supporting shooters while he shoulders the load till the wheels come off. Kinda want him to get another one though.   :gladbron

Has been kind of a busted season for me with AD kind of blowing up the pels, who knows what future holds. I am getting daily emails for season seats/packages though so that's nice I guess.

I hope I'm wrong but nothing in David Griffin's past(besides lucking into Lebron after coming onto a team with Kyrie) really screams anything but average to slightly above average GM.

Really do hope I am wrong though.

Kings have already hired Luke Walton, who is their 10th coach in 14 years

apparently Magic quit because he wanted to fire Walton and Jeanie Buss didn't and yet... ???

Quote
"Make sure that door is closed," Johnson said, referring to the locker room entrance, before shocking the basketball world by resigning as the president of basketball operations.

He cited all sorts of reasons for his decision in an impromptu 45-minute news conference (which was followed by separate 10-minute and 15-minute breakout sessions, as if he hadn't already said enough). Included on that list was his desire to avoid conflict with Lakers owner Jeanie Buss -- whom he didn't inform of his decision to step down in advance -- because of their differing opinion on Walton. Johnson wanted to fire him; Buss supported her young coach.

"Tomorrow, I would have to affect someone's livelihood and life," Johnson said of his plans to dismiss Walton as soon as the season ended. "I thought about that and said, 'That's not fun for me. That's not who I am.' Then I don't want to put her in the middle of us. Even though, she said, 'Hey, you do what you want to do.' I know she has great love for him and great love for me."
Quote
The implicit pressure that came with coaching the team became far more direct after L.A. limped out of the gate 2-5. Johnson dressed down Walton in an explosive meeting, demanding immediate results. Everyone in the Lakers organization began feeling the pressure of trying to win now despite the fact that Johnson had asked the fan base to remain patient.

In the aftermath, Johnson told the Los Angeles Times and ESPN that Walton was safe and would coach the remainder of the season -- offering no vote of confidence beyond that.

Beyond the early-season meeting, communication between Walton and the front office was fraught, sources told ESPN. At one point, Pelinka sat in on coaches' meetings, involving himself at a granular level in Walton's workload. In another example, Walton went weeks without hearing a peep from Magic Johnson. Both tactics were unusual for an NBA team.

As damning as Walton's early-season meeting with Magic might have been, the true death knell came when he was left out of LeBron's exit meeting with Johnson and Pelinka, conducted several days before the end of the season, according to a report by ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.
Quote
And then came the Anthony Davis debacle.

In the weeks leading up to the Feb. 7 trade deadline, Walton said he tried to tell his young players, all of whom had heard their names mentioned in one reported deal or another, to block out the noise.

And when the trade for Anthony Davis didn't go down, the stench only lingered.

When the Lakers arrived in Philadelphia after the trade deadline, Johnson came into the locker room about 30 minutes before tipoff -- the time usually reserved for the coaching staff to go over the game plan -- and had an announcement for the team.

Johnson reasoned to the players that the fact they weren't traded meant the Lakers wanted them more than any other team did and then tried to rally them together, declaring his goal of making the playoffs.

The message fell flat, sources told ESPN.

"It was bad," one source said. "It was bad." Another source was sketchy on Johnson's exact message because, well, he "tuned the m-----f----- out."

If someone had told me at the beginning of the season that the 76er's were going to have that lineup come playoff time, and that lineup would struggle at home against the Nets, I'd have slapped the shit of you....But here we are.
