Arc Rise Fantasia - The Long Forgotten Gamecube RPG
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:42:47 PM »
this get released next week,i've read gamesradar review and they described it as the most generic and bland rpg ever, which sounds pretty believable considering an ex tales of scenario writer was involved with this game

but ehy it's not like there is much else to pick when it comes to jrpg on the wii so i guess beggars can't be choser

i guess the only other people that are going to check this out are the one who fawn all over yasunori mitsuda :smug

I should mention why I like it:

I have only put about 5 hours in. I'm at "Dragon Prison" which isn't that far. I've beaten one boss.

- The game is widescreen - no bars
- The game is colorful - what can I say, most Wii games are muted shit
- The game is playable with a Gamecube pad. It's a Gamecube game!
- The battle system is neat. It's if I had to describe it, a turn-based Grandia.
- You can grind weapons and unlock skills and attach them
- The characters aren't offensive.
- The story is pretty cliche, but I'm ok with that. See above, it's not offensive
- The dub, while ok it is pretty bad, is NOT as bad as we saw in the very first cutscene. That was just bad. Some characters actually put effort in. However there are moments where they just screw it up. Mostly when they have to make a sound effect.

I won't defend myself if you hate it, but I do like this game. Definitely consider checking it out, and at least playing up to the first boss. If you still hate it, dump it and don't force yourself. I don't consider this a Wii game. It is a Gamecube game.

I'm interested now.  Watching videos, it does look slightly grandia-ish, just as you say, turn-based instead of a timer for actions.

It's not so much Grandia in that I haven't figured out how to cancel enemy attacks, but that's what it feels like to me. Each turn you set up your plan of attack (Have a guy attack, have a guy use magic, have a guy use a special move). Then you hit "Start" and the turn plays out. Your characters will run up and attack first, while say an enemy is charging up to use a spell. You might kill this enemy before he pinches the spell out. You might heal before the enemy attacks you.

You can also use passive abilities like "Team Attacks" where a character will get a free attack in after a character attacks. Or one of the bonuses attached to your weapon at the time.

it's passable. worst story ever, though. the two big twists so far have been HUMILIATINGLY stupid.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
adele: i was your friend of 15 years, now i'm a major villain!

alf: lol me 2! sorry we annoyed you with all that chumminess and nostalgia up to this point! and the extravagant lengths we went to in order to break into our own city and prison for no good reason, and the faked up kidnapping -- well, we did it for the lulz. seriously, i myself can't fathom why adele and i went to all this trouble!

l'arc: WELL ISN'T THAT A BUMMER. AH WELL, TIME TO GET PAID.
[close]

spoiler (click to show/hide)
ryfia, rastan, cecille: man, this cave is boring. hey, l'arc!

l'arc: FUCK WHAT I AM ALWAYS ANGRY AND THIS IS NOT HELPING.

ryfia, rastan, cecille: WE'RE FROM OUTER SPACE!!!!!!! :trollface
[close]

bonus EXTRA stupid:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
dynos: remember how i was like the most annoying boss fight in the early game and was thwarting you at every turn?

l'arc: I GUESS, MY ANGER ISSUES GIVE ME SHORT-TERM MEMORY DIFFICULTIES I THINK

dynos: cecille's my OLDER sister. we're from outer space. we cool? i mean, i've only been summoning the undead to harass you and made every effort to inexplicably murder you AND your rivals, but we cool? lemme join for a bit. blah blah blah imaginal rozone eesa crystals real pollution herp derp fuck.

l'arc: BOGGLE. OKAY.

mmm i see

anyway i like what i played so far,the character are nice, the battle fast paced enough, the bosses hit hards and actualy even killed me and it basicaly has FF9 skill system meaning there are a lot of customization option

everybody says that the dub is horrible and the translation horrible but i don't find it that bad,i think the voice are well suited, arc is the smug hero, ryfia is the dumbass heroine and niko is the idiotic zell like buddy, the only voice that really bothers me is adele which sounds like mary poppins if she had potato in her mouth,i think they were trying to go for "dumb country girl" but they kinda missed the mark

one thing i don't understand is if the whole party shares their AP what reason do i have to use any other character other than the one who deals more damage for my actual attacking need?

If you have the same character attack 3 times, it will be slower than having 3 separate people (or 2, and 1 healing/item) go. It is VERY noticable. And down the road you will learn about "Syncing" which is basically chaining. You can have multiple people use an Excel Art on an enemy, or all attack an enemy, or all use magic on an enemy and it will get stronger.

i just chained magic with a single character by double casting the same spell so.....
what are the advantage to double casting in a party? game says i get more AP but i already regenerate 8 out of 10,doesn't seems worth the effort to distribuite my magic around

Yeah, so use a different character to link. You aren't restricted to just one type of magic. You have to buy Gem Expansions, which let you attach more orbs, so others can use Fire magic for example

Magic is extremely strong, you will find out.

One tip I can offer buy -lots- of potions. You will be guzzling them during boss fights when Ryfia runs out of Heal. Money is extremely generous in this game so go nuts.

i know that magic is extremely strong,i just did like 2000 damage to the third boss by using the fire level 3 combination magic :lol

problem is,i could use this magic because i put all my 3 orbs in a single character,if i gave 2 to one and 1 to another one i wouldn't be able to do so,that's why i keep saying it seems pointless to distribuite your orb between character

have you tried stealing from bosses? i didn't think about doing it so maybe i missed something important,i hope not :-X

Bosses are very difficult, I don't even bother trying to steal. However it is useful when doing those silly Guild quests. I got my first one that involved a boss fight (at least it had boss music anyway). It violated my anus so I left it alone.

I've also begun filling in my grids so I get the bonus from swords, some of them are very useful. Like the boss I'm on is an aquatic type, so I filled the water sword so he has Aquatic Bane+ on it now.

so 3 hours of poker netted me

- a sword that heals me everytime i murder some monster
- a pair of gloves that let me convert HP into special attack points
- a gun that give me +10 luck
- a wand that has a small chance to increase my max HP everytime i finish a battle (i bet the small chance is really small and that the HP increase is like 1 HP otherwise it would be to easy to broke the game :lol)
- a dagger that increase money drop
- a sword which i have no idea what it does, maybe another luck+ skill

did i mention this game is quite cool?

Well my schizophrenia like illness makes me very veryy lazy.  So much so that i cant learn from the usual channels, unless i am pushed to do so.  So i cant learn from reading a newspaper without a reason for example.  So as a result i have learned very little in my 30 years of life and accomplished very little.  So when i make stupid comments etc it is just part of my learning process.  That is why i am dumb.
