Tech Bore: Are these monitors any good?
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:21:01 PM »
Want to get a new monitor; would be using it for PC/360/PS3.  Going to get it from Amazon since I'm about to get $200 in credit from them.  My concern is over any potential ghosting problems.  The monitor I have now has none.

2.5 ms On/Off Response Time; 300 nits of Brightness; 40,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio

and

3ms gray-to-gray response times

I have the 23" one at work.  I love it.  But I don't game or watching anything on it.  I just read spreadsheets and emails and look at Dulce Maria pictures.

Go with the 23", it's only a few bucks more.

Those are good monitors, especially if you are getting $200 off, but make sure you are aware of any potential ghosting problems before you choose one.  The first has 2.5 ms On/Off Response Time; 300 nits of Brightness; 40,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio and the second has 3ms gray-to-gray response times.  Hope that helps!

 :lol

Yeah, so I'd like to know what the difference is.  Odd that they would release two monitors with less than two inches difference between them.

There's also this.

ASUS MS238H

LED monitor with 10000000:1 Contrast Ratio.  Seems pretty slick.

Sorry it took me so long to respond.

No ghosting.  But like I said, all my stuff is done through spreadsheets and surfing the web.  I don't even watch videos on it.  The colors are great though.  I'm always super peeved when I go home and surf on my laptop and it looks like ass.  Great monitor from what I've used.

I'm concerned about the refresh rate/input lag on those HP monitors.  They don't appear to be as fast as the ASUS models.  But it's hard to tell since apparently manufacturers use different ways of measuring them (from what I've read) and I did go to Fry's over the weekend to look at the 2310m in person.  It looked pretty damn nice, but of course without being able to hook up a console and try out SF4, there's no telling.

There are ZERO reviews out there for any of HP's new monitors, too.  ???

Um.  The only game I even have on my laptop for work is Civ IV but i don't think that's the best for judging refresh rates :lol  sorry, dude :(

There's also people saying that 22" is the sweet spot for TN panel monitors.  I'm no graphic designer, though, so these cheap-o monitors are fine for me...

I personally did not like the new HP line as I found the color very washy during fast motion. I eventually went with the Samsung P2450. There is a newer model P2450H thats available at Amazon. Its super fast at 2ms and its got a very nice contrast ratio of 70k. The only draw back is that it only has one HDMI port. But it includes a VGA and DVI port too.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind, but I'm pretty set on these new HP monitors at the moment.  Seems like most monitors only have one HDMI port, but that's fine; I've got an HDMI selector.

I got a new monitor. Cheap ass 19" Asus for 100 euros/100 bucks. It's pretty much as good as my 22" inch HP monitor that I got years ago. IMO I don't see the use in getting something more expensive. Not until the technology improves by a lot. CRT is still better IMO, but those monitors are too huge and use way too much power.

Well, there you go-- start spending more money, and you get better black levels, color, backlighting, and the like.  The cheaper monitors are all TN Panels.  If you spend more you get different (better) types of monitors.

The question is that matters to you.  If I were a graphic designer, I'd want something of a much higher quality, but I'm not.  These cheaper monitors work great for me.  The only reason I am even getting a new one is for console gaming purposes.

And now that we're on the subject of electronics... what's up with all this black bullshit? All of this shit is black with a shiny finish. WTF. You can easily see dust and fingerprints. I really wanted a white monitor and case but decided that I had to go black anyway. The options are extremely limited if you want a white monitor, case and kb/m.

B-b-b-b-but it's SHINY!

It's fine to me.  I don't have fingerprints all over my monitor and I clean it often.  Don't see what the big deal is.

I don't think I've even seen a white monitor for sale recently, come to think of it.  Everything is black.  There are those Samsung "touch of color" monitors, which are really just black with a color band around the edges, lol.

Ended up going black and silver this PC go-round anyway-- my netbook is black/silver, speakers are too, new keyboard/mouse are black/silver, monitor is as well, G-Drive is silver, USB hubs are mostly silver, external DVD+-RW is black/silver, and the desk I just recentlly got is black metal with tempered black glass.  My iPhone's the same color scheme too...
