What did you think of this movie? I just saw it and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised how the movie take a grip of you from the first minute to the very end. Never a dull moment! Also, El Capitano must the one of the most hated villains in movie history. What a douche.

Decent movie with crappy characters, writing, in your face symbolism and themes and editing.

Watch Spirit of the Beehive instead. Pan's Labyrinth done right and a big proponent of its creation; big influence, and an actual movie for adults.

Thought it was interesting and different which is always good but it didn't really grab me the way the hype back then sort of set it up for.

I don't really remember a lot of it and I don't have an overwhelming urge to see it again which is never a good sign as I tend to like to rewatch movies I really liked a few times.

Who is "hating on del Toro"? I saw some people express an opinion about a movie. I hate this idea that there can only be one opinion on a single movie, or game, or book, or Tv show, or whatever.

I don't see many similarities with Pan's Labyrinth, to be honest. The only things the movies have in common are the spaced out girls and the Spanish language.

But the movie had something. I liked how it was filmed. Felt so eerie. And Ana is so cute in a non-pedo way.

They're similar in that they explore civil war Spain through the eyes of a child. Both movies share one central theme: family. girl in Pan's has no family aside from her mother, and there's a giant emphasis on being the true daughter of some spirit dude. The captain is a man obsessed not with love, with on passing on his genes to a son. Beehive examines the destruction of the Spanish family unit due to the war. Notice that there is not one scene in Beehive where the family is together, aside from the two sisters.There is a big emphasis on family and a sense of being in both films, told solely through the naivete and utter gullibility of children.

Who cares about symbolism. I want an entertaining movie also. And Beehive just isn't all that interesting besides its symbolism and use of metaphors. The people who don't catch the symbolism will fall asleep while watching Beehive.

Pan does not just offer symbolism, but it is also presented very well. You can watch it and think about the symbolism. Or you can just watch it and be blow away by the presentation without thinking about its undertone.

You can't really blame Beehive, though. It's made in 1973. It's good for what it is...

No, but the cinematography in Pan is more imaginative. The whole movie is more creative than Beehive. In Pan you can see the world the girl is imagining. In Beehive you can only see the girl.

Pan's presentation is epic, while Beehive's is more subtle. Both movies approach the concept differently. The more I think about Beehive, the more I like it. But I just like Pan's universal approach better.

Who cares about creativity when it's presented like a turd? There are tons of movies with great concept and terrible execution. Beehive is one of them. And you're inserting your own central point into Pan's to fit your critique. Yes, she cares about having her family, etc. But a huge, huge, huge, huge part of the movie is the visuals. Watch anything where Del Toro talks about the film. He makes it extremely obvious his focus was there. Movies don't have to be engaging in the same way. And i don't care how deep a movie is if the presentation reminds me of paint drying. A good artist finds a balance between both.

Either way, Third, ignore Himuro regarding Pan's. When he first saw it. He "trolled" how "bad" the cinematography was.

Pan's didn't have bad cinematography. But it certainly had fucking annoying editing. The overuse of trees and dark transitions...ugh. So predictable editing.

Not really. Since editing IS the movie, unpredictable editing makes a movie better because it's hard to predict. A lot of the tree shots were great, but to my memory, the editor uses them far too often as a transitional tool. This makes the editing feel canned and forced because I've already seen that trick play out in the story.

In short, it ruins immersion.

Editing can really bother me when watching a movie.

Like I was watching Invictus, and the part near the end where it's basically three minutes of slow motion. I wanted to gag and stuff my cock in the person's ear who edited that shit. You make use slow motion as tension. It's supposed to build up, and explode like a guy cumming on his first pair of tits. When I watched the credits I was looking for the editor, I was gritting my TEETH,"this better not be Clint. Clint is better than this." Thankfully it wasn't. Jesus Christ those two-three minutes of Invictus were awful.
