This game is UN FUN. The cars drive like shit, you lose health for getting in accidents (THATS THE WHOLE POINT), too easy to get killed and the guns dont 'feel' like anything. Feels like homework.

All of those reviews have a line similar to "Let's get this straight:  Mafia II isn't an open world game, nor is it intended to be." and then a bit later "There aren't many side activities, the open nature is wasted, it's 10 hours long, etc. etc."  One of them even appears to be glad there isn't as much busywork as there is in games like Saint's Row and RDR, only to complain about the lack of side missions later in the review.  So which is it?  It seems like they all go in knowing (and telling the reader) that it wasn't meant to be an open world game, and then ended up reviewing it like it was.  I don't trust a single review I read from Stoney's links.

Yeah, but it seems like they're saying that because they wanted it to be something that it isn't, even though they knew that going in.

"Story is great, shooting and driving are fine, but it's only ten hours long and there isn't much to do outside of the main missions" doesn't seem like a bad game to me, seems like someone wanted Goodfellas Theft Auto and didn't get it.

What I'm getting out of the links is "the game isn't all that good"

The game is amazing, one of the best games ever, you just can't go in expecitng a sandbox shitfest like Saints Shit 2 or Grand Theft feggits 4. This is a mans computer game by a Eastern Europe developer, the world is just a setting for the missions and the story. It's one of the best games ever made and a sequel to the former best game ever made

"Journalists" are missing the fact that this is Mafia 2. They're blatantly ignoring the first one, mostly because these console fanfags and Xbots never played the first one so they just dont' "get it". This is a high class game, when a bunch of Saints Shit 2 loving feggits are playing this and expecting to throw shit over mobsters.

None of those journalists who played the First mafia are reviewing this game, and if they did, they're the ones giving it a 9.0.

I don't understand what the deal with the DLC is

on the manual (pc version) it says something about a Jimmy DLC (Jimmy's Vendetta? something like that).  I thought it was something only for the PS3 and included with the game.  Then I see on the PS3 store that it is sold for $10 and it is betrayal of jimmy, not his vendetta.  So confusing.

Betrayal of Jimmy is exclusive to PS3, and the code comes with new copies (If you buy used, you gotta cough up the $10).  Jimmy's Vendetta will be available to all systems as paid DLC later on.  They're both just sets of missions.  In essence, you're paying for (or getting free on PS3 in the case of "Betrayal") all the extra missions and side stuff left out of the main game.  I'd imagine there will be a Free Ride DLC at some point, too.

Played for a number of hours since I got home. Seems ok. I mean this ain't RDR but its decent enough. As expected its a very linear and scripted open world game much like the first. Some people will like that and some won't.

The story and voice acting seem to be the best part so far. The shooting and driving is just average but then its average in most open world games so this isn't really that different.

Played a bit more before I stopped. I'll probably beat it tomorrow in another long session.

I like it. Unless the second half just completely falls apart I can say I've enjoyed it. I like the era specific recreation and music. I like the voice acting. I like the arc of the story.

There is nothing revolutionary here or very advanced for the genre. And the action is average. But it appeals to me. You sort of bear with the average action to get to the next story bit or more cutscenes.

If you like Mafia movies as interpreted by Hollywood then you'll probably like this. If you're not overly a fan of that then you'll probably not like it as much. There is almost nothing "extra" to do. It's really structured in a such a way that you just go from mission to mission and there isn't a lot of extra stuff in the world. But I've always been the type where that's fine with me in an open world game. I don't mind the structure and I need a good story to propel me through these kinds of games. When its very very open I tend to find it too plotless for me to enjoy.

They aren't.

It's like Vice City to Liberty City in the PS2 games. There's references to Lost Heaven everywheres, and then that aforementioned cutscene. It's not directly connected, but they do intertwine.

Finished it up this evening. I was home sick today so I played alot.

Most of my feelings remain the same as they were earlier. I really enjoyed it. It's a great little mafia story with great little characters. As far as videogame stories, it was one of the more engrossing ones I've ever came across.

I still like RDR a hell of a lot more as an overall game because that is a more complete, and audacious, and generally better game but the story and cutscenes and voice acting in Mafia 2 are superior imo. And that's saying a lot because I thought that aspect of RDR was damn good.

Mafia 2 is kind of let down because the game parts of the game are just average. Rolling around and shooting people is just average. But damn if I wasn't motivated to do it because the story has great motivation and reason for you to be doing all the stuff you are doing.

Despite its technical shortcomings such as iffy frame rate at times and the screen tearing and the aliasing, sometimes its actually a really pretty game even on the consoles. There were a couple of times where I kinda just wanted to take a screen-cap because the world looked so cool and realized.

I don't know. A part of me can't help be disappointed and wish the game had a more realized world with stuff to do in it, but honestly I really enjoyed playing it and going from linear mission to linear mission because they told a really good story. Surprising game. After the first hour or two I was ready to call it a big disappointment and failure but the more I played the more immersed I got and the more I liked it. Finished it in about 12 hours which feels right. One of the better games I've played this year even with its faults.

Sadly I didn't get very many of the playboy collectibles.  :'(

I finished it earlier.  I really liked it.  I can't really compare it to Red Dead Redemption because I wasn't a fan of the main missions of that game; it was the hunting, saving women, and being a dude in a western world that made me really like that game.  If we were comparing the main story stuff only, I liked Mafia 2 more.  But I don't think it is really a fair comparison.  Mafia 2 hardly tries to be an open world game, even though it tries a hell of a lot more than Mafia 1, and it does some incredibly cool stuff that is ultimately pointless and shallow.  Things like if you rob a Diner, then return some time later, you'll see cops interviewing the people inside and they will point you out a the crook and have the cops chasing your ass.  It just never tries to be an open world game in the way that games following GTA are.  That and the ending were the two things I actually disliked about the game.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Really, there is no ending.  When the credits rolled, I expected "chapter 16" to appear.  The game just stopped.
[close]
I expect there will be lots of DLC eventually.

more about the ending
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I mean, if they wanted to end it on a low note and just make it seem like the cycle is repeating again, it didn't even feel like that happened.  If the credits didn't appear and there was just a black screen, I would have thought the game crashed.

They also didn't go anywhere with the idea of Vito becoming like his dad.

It feels like there is more that just isn't there.

I noticed complaints about the ending over at GAF and I just don't agree. I thought the ending was great. It basically ended like a good movie. Life goes on. But poor Joe is fucked even after he did the right thing. And Vito continues on in the life conflicted as he has always been. The real story of the game was Joe and Vito and their relationship.

I hope they don't fuck it up personally by adding some DLC or a sequel that has to "explain things" but I have a feeling they will because videogames never have any balls to leave some good questions.
