Wow, 360 still on top.

That's only because the PS3 is having supply constraint problems...

Worst month for software I have ever seen... Mafia 2 has tanked but you can expect that from a crap game.

Good to see the XBEAST 360 is wiping the floor with PS3. That'll teach Sony for not coming up with achievements first

interesting how close madden 11 PS3 is to the 360 version this time around.

Quote
Perennial powerhouse Madden NFL 11 outran its competition in August.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the EA Sports title took No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on The NPD Group's monthly sales charts. Combined, Madden sold 1.8 million copies, outpacing the 1.75 million copies sold in its inaugural month last year (that total includes a PS2 version that sold 120,000).

However, sales were not enough to prevent the industry's fifth straight decline. Total sales of video games, systems and accessories amounted to about $819 million, 10% below August 2009, according to NPD's report. Hardware sales dropped 5%, while software sales dropped 14%.

"In fact, this month reflected the lowest sales for August since 2006," says NPD's Anita Frazier. "While all categories are down in both dollars and units, the portable portion of the industry is down to a greater extent than is the console portion."

Portable sales (hardware, software and accessories) is down 25%, compared to last August; console dollar sales are down 6%, she says. However, 2010 could still show top 2009's $19.66 billion total. "Factoring in seasonality and taking into account some of the incredible games and accessories (PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Kinect) that are coming out during the remainder of the year, new physical retail video game sales are likely to land in the range of $18.6 to $20 billion for the year."

interesting how close madden 11 PS3 is to the 360 version.

EA has been making a pretty aggressive effort in the last year or so on the PS3. A lot of things like advertising with Sony and offering betas first on the PS3. They probably feel they have a loyal audience there from the PS 2 era that is upgrading.

seems its paying off with Madden at least.

We'll see how the other EA games fare.

The more interesting bit to me is how the Wii has completely fallen off. It barely outsold the PS3. Seems like the fad (at least when it comes to hardware) is experiencing diminishing results finally. Maybe time for a price cut on it. I'm sure it will still have a big Xmas since its the safe console for parents but still it ain't what it used to be.

Software includes sales of new physical games sold at retail; does not include revenue from used, digital downloads, dlc, rental, subscription, mobile or social network games.
NPD will report on the total market, including these other forms of revenue, on a quarterly basis in the near future.

Seems NPD will be finally doing the whole shebang soon (so digital downloads may finally get some numbers now)

Yeah, I could definitely see the Wii spiking with a price drop. Hasn't it been a year since the drop to $200?

They could at LEAST be stingy and release a barebones package with just the console and wiimote for like 150- bucks.  I heard a rumor about that but I haven't really followed up on that.

edit

And stop me if I'm being an ignoramus on the economics of it all, but I think the one true barrier thats holding back the wii is that their audience isn't the obsessive nerds who will spend copious amounts of money on hardware and software.  I know tjhe 50 dollar price point has worked years and years for them, but sales are dwindling and now is the time to introduce a discount line of their most popular wii software attached to a big advertising push.  Wii Fit plus is really the only software still sticking around and thats like a 20 dollar disc to most people.  Mariokart, Wii Play, Animal Crossing, etc should not still be 50 dollars if you're trying to attract new customers this late in the game.

I like Mafia 2. A lot. But I doubt its ever going to be some mega franchise. It simply doesn't have enough wide spread appeal both with its content and its theme. Hell RDR isn't ever going to be as popular as GTA and it took a great fucking game to garner it the sales levels it did.

Also taking 8 years between iterations of your game probably isn't a great thing for consumer awareness. For what its worth those were like less than a week of sales as the game was released on the 24th of August but of course with games like that the sales are mostly front loaded so it evens out.  It's sold decently in Europe (England) also but yeah that's a series where the games need to be more cost efficient and it can't take forever between installments.

Well I love freedom fighters but it ain't ever gonna happen. But the silly thing was IO took out all the elements in K&L 2 that at least hark back to freedom fighters and just made it a really generic and bad third person shooter. At least the original K&L had a few original elements that started from freedom fighters like the squad control. K&L 2 has nothing.

You guys do realize that DQIX came out in July, right? That it already charted last month, sold about 130k. Or was everybody hoping that it was going to become a perennial powerhouse like NSMB DS and still be in the Top 10 after 5 years?
