You'll want 12 points in dexterity even as playing pyro just to use the bow to get the dragon tail sword.

I also went Thief initially for the Master Key in addition to another gift, not knowing it was the only gift item worth a damn.  Not sure what the deal is with how shitty that class is; you're much better off going as a Wanderer if you really want that early dexterity focus.  One of the best classes overall, and starts with a scimitar, too.

The early difference with the pyromancer build is incredibly pronounced. I'm chopping through guys with my big 'ol axe and then burning up the pieces with a fireball.

A powerful, ranged weapon [the fireball] really is a God-send. I took down that knight guy in Undead Berg] and I didn't even have to get within range of his massive sword. I'm basically rockin and rollin' now, can't nothin' stop me!

Okay, so, the sword you get from knocking off the dragon's tail is something that I really need, apparently, but I need a bow of some kind to get it. Unfortunately, I haven't found a bow lying around anywhere. Some help here?

Also, I've found some titanite ore and I know where the blacksmith is, should I upgrade any of my current equipment or save it for some of the good equipment?

save it. and if you have a halberd you dont need a bow for the dragon tail.

actually, if you are playing a pyromancer you might be able to do it with the starter axe. go to the stairs at the middle of the bridge, stick your head up so the dragon cooks all the zombies. He'll then walk a little back and forth on top and you can go up and take a few dual hand slashes at his butt and his tail will come off.

video giving you a general idea. you don't need to use the lightning juice tho. but it'll make it much easier.

I'll give it a shot. Also, I just now found the merchant in Undead Berg, so I don't need help finding the bow now.

I've really been tearing through the game over the past hour or two, with my knight shield and fabulous Boar Fang helmet. Even took down some of the bigger enemies that are out roaming around, just went at them head-on.

kill the black knight at the top of the tower when you first enter the parish (near the red dragon).  You'll get a better shield.

Also, got the drake sword, but my strength is only 13 at the moment. It said something about using the sword two-handed, but I can't figure out how to do that.

Oh the guy with the large club? awesome.

Now run to altar and you'll gain your first Firekeeper Soul. Don't use it, but take it to the Firelink shrine (the elevator in the church is a shortcut) and give it to the mute imprisoned lady, and she'll infuse it with your Estus Flasks which will give you a permanent bonus (+1) per use.

Dark Souls is definitely a different kind of experience. It's oppressive, it's intense, and every battle is a struggle. Like the name suggests, it's DARK. But I definitely appreciate it a lot more now that I actually have some idea of what I'm doing and have been able to acquire some decent equipment.

A 2-handed heavy attack with the Drake will destroy enemies with a lightning based special, iirc. But as result will shave 30 durability points per use, so keep an eye on it. #FYI

Ugh, my primary weapon first time around was a golem sword whose heavy attacks sapped durability. Absolutely useless.

Took down the two golems, rang the bell, went wandering around the Darkwater Basin because why not, ran from various unspeakable horrors, and then fled back to the relative safety of the Firelink Shrin.

there's a point in the game where you become pretty strong and you stop being afraid of enemies.... that point is when you stop being afraid of all enemies. even though you eventually come up against stronger enemies and that cycle begins again -- you never have that fear again.

at least i never did.

and if you're playing Pyromancer and relying on fireballs, well, enjoy fighting

You beat the Butterfly and you'll get an item or key from the tower, something that'll unlock a door at bridge where the Hellkite Dragon was frying people (next to where Solaire of Astora was standing). It'll take you down to a town street where you'll fight a couple of nasty hollow assassin and dogs. At the end of this area lies the Infamous Capra Demon. Once you kill him you'll get the key to the Depths, that's an ok area if it wasn't for the Basilisk. It inflicts curse, an ailment that halves your HP and can't be cured without a special expensive item, so beware. Unless it ambushes you, it'll go down easily. Clear the Depths and you'll face the Gaping Dragon, it'll drop the the 25k souls and I think the keys to Blighttown.

That is basically your itinerary for the next few hours. My personal advice is to buff your character in the forest, after you buy the crest, before heading into Blighttown if you feel you're under-leveled. The Spider Shied, which can be found in the Depths is a must (100% resistance to Poison and Toxic). A map of Blighttown wouldn't hurt as well. The first area can be confusing as hell.

Godspeed bro.

You don't have to beat the Butterfly.  You should naturally pick up the basement key lying out in the open in the Parish somewhere.  The new area has some annoying dogs and ninjas that will whoop your inept ass, no doubt, so make sure you find the shortcut back to the Undead Burg bonfire first.

You may also use the key acquired in the boss with with the Belfry Gargoyles to enter the lower levels of Undead Burg.

Yep, Robo is correct. I think the Butterfly is optional. The keys I was referring to at the beginning should be dropped by the Gargoyles.

butterfly is optional, and piss easy.

opening the door is nice to do if you have specific goals in mind for your souls. In the early game I was kinda just throwing souls into whatevs and not really caring.

I was just going to ask you whether you were summoning NPCs, players, or neither. As you have the benefit of playing post 1.05, so the game's online is somewhat functional.

Also, are did try or ever needed to Kindle?

One macho borito finished the game not realizing that kindling was possible before acquiring the Rite of Kindling. :salute
