I haven't done any kindling, each time I try it tells me I don't have the sacred rite. What does kindling even do?

And I got ride of my gold account, so no online for me.

You need to be Human.  It doubles the number of health flasks you carry after sitting at the bonfire.

Yeah, you need to reverse your hollowing first (1 humanity point), then kindle (another humanity point) to be able to restock 10 flasks from that specific bonfire. It can be a godsend in tough(er) or strategic places. The Rite of Kindling will allow you to kindle any bonfire up to 4 times later in the game, for a total of 20 Flasks per rest.

Yup, every time you rest at that rekindled bonfire, you'll get the maximum number of flasks; 10 if you rekindled once, 20 if done 4 times later. So always choose wisely.

Ah, actually I guess I did do that before, because the Firelink Shrine bonfire always gives me 10 flasks.

It does, but that's either because it always does, without the need of rekindling (unconfirmed), or because people people in a session have it rekindled. That's another feature, when someone rekindles the last bonfire you rested at you get +1 Flask wherever you are. Every time it happens, your character absorbs some sort of golden dust.

However since you're not a Gold Live member, that rules out the latter and confirms the former; that Firelink Shrine always gives 10 Flasks without rekindling, just like how the final bonfire gives 20 automatically.

I'm interested in why a few here think DeSo is harder than DaSo. Demon's Souls had harder and better bosses, but overall I found Dark Souls more difficult

If you're want to pick up every single loot that tree will make you rage. There's a Basilisk nest there as well, if you haven't stumbled on it already, beware.

(My favorite part about the nasty curse status is the replacement of blood stains with the stone statues of whoever succumbed to it. Too bad you can't see it)

Ended up getting myself cursed because I was careless. I can easily see how no one in their right mind would think this was a good idea.  >:(

However, it did give me a convenient excuse to leave the Great Hollow and go back to the Firelink Shrine [to collect the stuff left behind when the shrine maiden got killed and to talk to that weird serpent guy that took up residence]. Also, I can now fight ghosts, so I might go poke around a bit in New Londo before I uncurse myself and head back.

Finally took down Havel the Rock, then went on to fight hydra #2 and free that chick from the amber golem. Got my dragon sword and estus flask leveled up as well, for more better monster killing.

On a different note, Dark Souls really impresses. It doesn't feel like a Japanese game, or even a Western game for that matter. From Software has managed to inject the inventive weirdness of Japanese developers into the bland fantasy trappings of Western games, so you end up with the best of both worlds. It's not bland, but it's also not Power Rangers at Disney Land [see: FFXIII] or boring animu. They've also completely nailed the awe of exploring some truly amazing locations [through a combination of the massive scale and interesting and unique designs of each new area] and the thrill of finally fighting your way through an area that previously felt impossible. The various NPCs you come across also make things interesting, they're all different and many of them have their own goals and storylines that unfold over the course of the game. Even thought Skryim is still my GOTY, Dark Souls is even more impressive in many ways [not even counting things like animation and overall polish]. It's easily the best RPG I've played from out of Japan in years.

It's also interesting to note that, gameplaywise, Dark Souls actually has more in common with Euro RPGs [Two Worlds, Gothic, Risen, ect.].

I don't see how Dark/Demon's Souls gameplay has anything in common with any RPG that I've ever played. It's much, much closer to an action game like Ninja Gaiden, except simplified to the basics of hit-evade-block (ie. no real combos). Then it has all of the RPG stuff like leveling and loot thrown on top.

Single-character, third-person view, lots of rolling and dodging and blocking. It has a more similar feel to those games I mentioned than, say, Mass Effect or Skyrim.

I hope more RPGs take inspiration from Souls online implemention, not really into MMOs but Souls style of multi is great. I came into Demons late and after Darks 1.05 patch it feels so seamless and unobtrusive on top of the core experience and like an MMO makes the grind and thought put into your build feel so much more worth it. I've never played an MMO that grabbed me though, I prefer single player RPGs. Souls captures the best of both worlds for me

I really hope the online activity doesn't take a nosedive soon. I'll be abandoning my consoles for a few months, so I want it active when I play it again in the a future.

I, too, played Demon Souls for the first time in early 2010 (technically, "continued my old save") the online was active enough to offer the full experience. It really felt as alive as the first day I bought it.

Found a really awesome weapon today: the lightning spear. 160 physical damage and 160 electrical damage, nice. It does have the broad, sweeping arc of the drake sword, but it's really good for fighting in narrow place since it's just a straight thrust that won't bang off the walls.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Take that, iron golem. What a total puss. I would have beaten him on my first try by I accidentally fell off the ledge and died because the camera was being held by a cricket during that fight.

After slumming it through old, broken down castles and dank sewers for 15 hours, Anor Lando is AMAZING. Really nice change of pace there.

Lightning Spear is a turd, make a Lightning +5 version of your weapon of choice. Save up titanite chunkz and visit the Giant Smith in Anor Londo. Beat the Stray Demon in Undead Asylum for the titanite slab to get your weapon to Lightning +5. A lightning katana is a good choice if you got the DEX to wield one

The game does becoming much easier when you realize that the basic strategy for beating just about any enemy [even bosses] is to get a close as possible to them and then wait for a chance to attack.

Oh, you haven't done the Four Kings yet?

My route, iirc, was New Londo > Duke's Archives > Lost Izalith > Tomb of the Giants.

I did New Londo before the Archives because of the aforementioned Cursebite ring.

And I did Izalith before Tomb of the Giants to collect the Sunlight Maggot, instead of relying on the Skull Lantern.

Speaking of Izalith, if you have too many humanity points on your hand (30) and want to skip the terrible T-Rex section, complete the Chaos Servant's side-quest. The shortcut will open directly to where the maggots are. So you don't even need to complete Izalith to access them.

Yeah, you form a covenant with the weak spider lady, and feed her humanity points to advance through the covenant. 10 points will get you to level one (can't remember the gift), 20 more will give you a powerful Pyromancy plus it'll unlock the shortcut between Demon's Ruin and the inner part of Izalith, thus skipping the Lava pool where a dozen of incredibly annoying T-Rexes are roaming.
