lawl IGN gives it a 7.5

a 7.5 from IGN is like 3/10 elsewhere

are you fucking joking?

http://gamejournos.tumblr.com/post/1222619641/ign-didnt-really-like-castlevania-lords-of-shadow

He cites the opening paragraph, which ends with:
Quote
there is definitely fun to be had with Lords of Shadow and it’s drop dead gorgeous at times, but Castlevania fans might be left in the dark.

Sounds pretty 7-ish to me.  And it didn't sound like the guy "really didn't like" it.  He didn't like that it's not a metroidvania game, that's about all that blog told me.  Slow news day for the dork who manages that blog, I guess.

I dunno if Daemon Hatfield is just a mopey bastard, but he doesn't really go out of his way to point out why the game is good other than mentioning that it's fun for seemingly indescribable reasons, that it's pretty, and apparently has lasting appeal (in spite of the mind-numbingly repetitive combat ???).  The rest of the review is spent highlighting the negatives.

I'm not gonna defend the blogger because it does seem like he actually liked it even if he wasn't motivated enough to articulate why.

Played it 5-6 hours,my final impressions...

It's average,it has the same old outdated GOW mechanic, outdated encounter design...it can be pretty frustrating at times, especially at titans, boss fights not because they require superhuman skills, but because game expects you to be patient and go through some predetermined hoops for like 5-10 minutes while almost randomly throwing QTEs at you.Checkpoints are usually after those QTEs,fail and back to the previous checkpoint. Not to mention that your health is ridiculously low,die and you start with half of it...
Some enemies can only be defeated through QTE...if you damage them enough they will be stunned for a brief period of time, apply QTE

Typical encounter is...bunch of minions(they can kill you in few hits) and a boss like creature...copy-paste that
Minions can be defeated easily if you grab(QTE) them(takes some time, but they can't hit you that way,you could easily defeat hundreds of them like that),boss requires running in circle for few minutes...

So yeah,decent game at best...

Surely no one expects a God of War clone to dethrone NG or DMC? It won't even have a chance at dethroning the second-tier action games like God Hand or Shinobi. It's going to be the same zzzzzzzzz God of War combat with Castlevania trappings. Maybe it will be a little heavier on platforming and puzzles.

Not trying to defend the game or anything, I'm just saying it's a western-developed action game... keep your expectations in check.

meh, internet gamers are easily swayed by trailers, graphics, and nostalgia. This game has all 3 going for it.  Those seem to be the key deciding points in a lot of people's purchases.  They buy it and they comment on the gameplay after the fact.  A bad demo = this is just the tutorial or some other excuse.  Even then, bad gameplay = but the graphics, music, and story are good.  lol story

I agree. The trailers sucked and always concentrated on a shitty story-based slant. Who gives a shit, show me gameplay.

But I disagree as a whole. I thought the 12 minute trailer was great in regards to showing off the gameplay. I personally think the gameplay elements in the trailer (puzzles, platforming) are enough to create an authentic 3d Castlevania experience.

So far this game is ok.  It makes you appreciate other games (like god of war, and in one case, sotc) because some really bad choices, but it is entertaining enough.

Like, even though the game looks nice and all, the frame rate is shit and there are times when the visuals get in the way.  In the last level I played, a web I needed to cross was hidden in a ray of light; I didn't notice it until I reached the other end from an alternate path.  Other times during combat the camera would pull out and I'm lost because it is just a lot of brown and warm colors.  There are these goblin (or troll, whatever) enemies that throw grenades at you and that gets really annoying because everything kinda blends; also because the camera is a mess.  You don't control the camera and it isn't like God of War where it is placed to give you a good view of the area.  Instead, the camera sorta follows your character around but also sorta gets locked in place.  What that means is that enemies attack you from off screen, and because it moves, it makes it hard to even remember the positions of things.

My favorite thing is the way the game is structured.  A few short levels in a chapter ending with a boss fight.  It's nice because you can revisit old levels whenever to do challenges, higher difficulty runs, or collect items you weren't able to get before.  Some of the levels feel different, like when you're on the magical fantasy horse or are doing a puzzle challenge.

Anyway,
So there is this magical fantasy horse that was in the demo that jumps out of a portal and tells Gabriel, the main character, to ride him (her? it?).  You think they would explain things like why there is a magical horse that flies out of a portal. What  was Gabriel was planning to do if the horse didn't show up? did he know a magic horse would fly out of a portal to help him?

The horse said that s/he/it heard that he was looking for the Lake Guardian, but Gabriel only told some random villager.   Is the villager friends with the magic horse? Is the villager secretly the horse? if the villager did know/was the horse, why did he wait an entire night to meet Gabriel, and by running out of a magical portal?

Then you ride the horse and have to fight various enemies on the ground and on the horse, but in the end, the horse magically pushes away four of them at once.  Earlier, you hit a tree and fall off the horse, but the horse was always looking forward and never told you about that tree even though he knew how to talk.  And after you hit the tree, the horse keeps running, so you're stuck to fight a few enemies; when the horse reappears, he is running from behind you.  Did the horse open another magical portal off screen and appear behind you? he does this twice.

Has it been explained in the main game or changed at all? nope! All they say is that Gabriel had no clue what was happening in the next level loading screen.  wait, the horse appears through a portal, but he disappeared by vaporizing into the air  ???

Prime isnt Metroidvania

Why not? You run around free to explore at your leisure, collect upgrades and get weapons/powerups which allow you to access new areas and continue with the game. Sounds like metroidvania.

If you're old enough to have had a NES and SNES before they were retro, you'll like this one. It's like the original Castlevanias.

If you started gaming with the PSX and SOTN was the first Castlevania you ever played, you'll hate this.

The old castlevania games for NES (and  SC4) were actually slick and fun. I hate to say it, but even the N64 Castlevania games resemble the old school CV more than this mess.

yeah, this game isn't good so far.  It's really boring and it feels like I've been playing for months and it is only the second chapter.  It's just drab and tiring to play.  Demo made me think enemies would be quick to kill, but they are bullet (chain whip) sponges.  Even if you turn on the dark magic, it still just feels like you're slashing away nonstop.  It isn't like the combat is fun.  The platforming sucks.  Bosses are terrible.

Bring Iga back
