Oh yeah, that's out today isn't it?

In other creepiness, I did an observation of a middle school student the other day in art class... the back wall was plastered with pictures student had done of Sonic characters.... [shudders]

Demo is out on JPN PSN. It plays weird. I will probably buy it thanks to the rebate program they are doing this month.

I downloaded it but was too lazy to reach for my controller, so I just played it on the bluetooth remote.  All I really did was hold right and press the middle button so sonic would dash towards the enemies.  Demo is only like two minutes long.

Don't call me gay:

From the demo and from videos, it seems like the level design is pretty strong. The controls are NOT.

Just from my play:
-on the first little ledge in the game, as I run off the right I try to jump. For some reason the game thinks that I am not on the ledge so I do an air dash and it sucks all my momentum dry and looks stupid.
-if you EVER let go of right/left on the stick ALL MOMENTUM is instantly lost. It is very jarring and looks strange. Try spin dashing, jumping, and letting go off the stick. You will come to a dead halt instantly. Same goes for your standard jumping. It feels very strange and looks even worse, but I suppose it might allow for more accurate platforming than the older Sonic games.
-On 3 dfifferent occasions in the demo, I got stuck standing sideways on a wall. Once just from running at it too slow and experimenting, the prior times I was launched into a scooped wall from some other platform and just stuck to it sideways like Spiderman. Sonic will just stay there. You can even spindash from this position without sliding down.
-It is really annoying that they un-ball you when you launch off of an edge. This requires you to use the homing attack if they jam an enemy in someplace (which they do twice in the demo level). With the level of screen zoom and the time it takes for the game to 'lock on' for you, it's easy to accidentally air dash the enemy even if you aren't dumb enough to fly straight into him.
-Screen is kinda too zoomed in.

I don't know why they gave it R34L HD FIZZIX and then made them behave less naturally than games from 1991.

It's still fun to play though, I think I will buy it.

The physics and momentum in the game just seem completely off. Other than that, it wasn't horrible, which means its better than nearly every Sonic game released since 1995.

I woke up really early for some reason and tried the trial version. Rather than harping on this version which I found to be lacking, I would say that even if they made a perfect Sonic game that replicated those earlier ones, I still wouldn't have liked it. It's just not my thing at this stage in my life. It's like watching a Pokemon cartoon or something. It's not nostalgia for me anymore.

The older Sonic games [1-3 and Sonic and Knuckles] are still great fun and well-made in pretty much every way. Great, memorable music, huge, branching levels that usually have more than one way to get to the end, high-speed action that still requires platforming skill and quick reflexes, emphasis on momentum and physics, and all that. It's not like they're some fluff games where you press right on the D-pad and watch the pretty graphics go by.

Yup, totally agree with you. Some clever level designs (large, with multiple paths, tons of secret passages), fantastic music, tight controls and physics, great colorful graphics. Really great games and very 'pick up and play', as they're not nearly as long as the Mario games.

Yeah I won't overly get into an argument on this other than to say that while I agree those old sonic games were better than this, even back then they weren't especially impressive for me as purely games. They were fun very casual games that were good for that time and era of gaming. But then I feel the same way about space invaders. That doesn't mean I want to play Space Invaders nowadays in that same original form. Although if others are craving for that then more power to them I guess.

I still play the Genesis Sonic games, they're great even today. Sonic Adventure 1, however, not so much. Hasn't aged well at all, controls are way too floaty and collision detection is horrible. Camera is bad and the levels are way too linear and on-rails.

I liked them both when they came out, but one's an all-time classic and the other's just a passing fling.

This was my main problem with the demo. Who the hell actually thought that was a good idea for a platformer?

I also don't like his homing attack. Makes an already easy game even easier. Leave that in the 3D Sonics.

Sega has been doing a great job for years now, especially as a publisher. Plus they still have some great internal studios. AM2 is one of the best developers in the world, Overworks is good/great, and Amusement Vision pumps out so many [good] Yakuza games it would make Activision blush. Even Sonic Team has their moments.

I played the first level... and I wasnt offended. I mean. I was... the graphics are disgusting. Why do they have all these retro sprites when the game is gaudy nasty 3D. The special level was confusing to control.

But it was ok.

I would say Unleashed is still better.

Seeing as it would sell horribly on the Xbox in Japan, and the series already doesn't do very well in the west (it took a ton of complaining to get Sega to do a cheapass localization for Yakuza 3, although they were apparently happy with its sales - which I doubt were any more than 70-80k combined in the US & EU), probably not.

Everyone in this thread is wrong. Even classics like Sonic 2 are shit, so don't tell me Sonic 4 is even adequate. The only good sonic games are sonic3andknuckles and sonic 1.  Maybe if shallow trial and error gameplay injected with superfluous qte bullshit fills the void of your empty life then, sure, I see how you could pretend to like Unleashed or the Rush games.  Sonic Colors will be trash too.

Play more mario.

Also Square > BioWare. BioWare sure knows how to write a good story, but most of their games play like ass. The inverse is true of Square.

Sunshine wasn't even that bad, I don't blame that game. Galaxy 1 and 2 are too linear and piss-easy compared to SM64. Also NSMB Wii is :yuck

EDIT: That's not to say I didn't have fun with any of the above games ('cept NSMB Wii). I'm a die-hard platformer fan, I take what I can get.
