Somebody on gaf posted some decent comparison shots.
photomode models:
http://i.imgur.com/1mDyt.jpg
gameplay models:
http://i.imgur.com/uGxnJ.jpg
Both games use higher poly meshes for the photomode/menu models while the poly count for the meshes that are used during gameplay and replays are a fraction of that.  I think both games basically look identical.
Then you have not played both games. Either that or you're playing in standard definition, because the premium models in GT5 look an entire generation ahead of anything on both Ps3 and 360.

In fact, it is only the shadow resolution (on the cars) and effect pixelation that remind you that you're playing on limited hardware. But to be fair to GT, there are still PC games that struggle like fuck with effects cranked up - so yeah.
If it looked an entire generation ahead then it wouldn't look the same in a side-by-side comparison shot.  Hell, the only difference I can see in any of the shots is the better tire texture on the evo in FM3.

Look at the wheel well and the tires on the Forza car -- perfectly smooth. There's visible geometry on the GT5 model.

Have you actually played both games? Because I have, and I can tell you right now: Nothing on either console can match the graphical fidelity of the premium models in GT5.

GT5 looks like driving games do on my PC (running @1080p with everything on high). And it's running on 6 year old hardware.

Makes you wonder what PC devs have been doing all this time.

First off the PS3 is 4 years old and second, maybe the lighting on the cars is more convincing.  When looking at extreme close up shots of gameplay/photomode models of both games, it's clear that there aint shit other than that that's different about the cars.

During gameplay, the games are basically indistinguishable except for different lighting and Forza's more stable framerate.

If anything it makes me wonder why it took Polyphony Digital so long to put this out....and in this state.

The technology behind the Ps3 is not 4 years old. In fact (and this may blow your mind) we first heard of the tech behind the Ps3 around the PS2 launch.

Look at what you just posted: "When looking at extreme close up shots...". How about you play it first before making such a crazy comment.

During gameplay GT5 looks light years ahead of the console competition.

Makes you wonder why Turn10 keep releasing Forza games.

You know now that you mention framerate (@hitler), I've only experienced framedrops when making that crazy turn on the tokyo course (nighttime with dynamic weather).

It was like a 15 frame drop (which would put it @45fps), so it didn't hinder my ability to annihilate the competition  :D

Shit that was fast. If this had been an MS game itd be stuck in cert for weeks.

Has MS released a game at retail that was this fucking broken and unfinished?

Lips. No joke, and I realize to no-one's tears. The game Was broken as hell at launch, was repeatedly patched, and still does not work. They ignored their own guidelines in several cases, things which would not have been tolerated in a 3rd party title. The game regularly eats its own save data, and has multiple grinding-based 'cheevs. I occasionally consider dropping by the INiS office with an EMP device to prevent them from inflicting more damage on the gaming population.

If people still care, that is a nice fair video that shows almost identical races for both games.  I only played Forza 3, but it looks too bright in that video than how I remembered it looking.  Gran Turismo 5 looks a bit dark and I have no idea if that's normal.

1) Agreed, Gran Turismo 5 looks waaaay too dark in that comparison.

2) You can see the shadow resolution issue (in GT5) that I posted in my previous post.

3) Forza's lighting is abysmal. It looks like a cartoon in comparison to actual simulators.

Hehe yep, FM3 lighting is pretty awful, especially in Nur GP which was a DLC track and they seem to have phoned that one in even more than the other ones. Track is more lowpoly and doesn't even have a skybox. lawl

But what that vid really showed for me is how bad the engine sound in GT5 is

One funny little bit I've noticed is that for hardcore Sony fanboys sales never mattered this gen. It was all about the reviews.

But now with GT 5 its all about the sales again.

It's almost as if they are making this shit up as they go along.
