is this game suppose to be a good disney game, or is it yet another victim of the hype?

rofl. I put maybe 40 minutes into a Wii game and never touch it again. If those 40 minutes dont grab me, then why bother. I'll waste my time on useless 360 games instead.

okay! i gave it a fair spin for some first impressions....

i'm not really sure what to think, the game pretty much starts in full tutorial mode

you jump with A (and double jump by pressing A twice)
waggling let you do a spin attack (suspiciously similiar to mario galaxy)
you control the camera with the digital buttons (it doesn't bother me much but i pretty much expect at least 2 reviews complaining about bad camera simply because of this)

pointing at the screen and pressing B or Z let you shoots paint or thinner... paint makes platform appear while thinner make platform disappear, this would have been a nice concept but you can only control certain platform so in the end it's more or less a "PRESS B TO CONTINUE" gimmick, for example a wall blocks your way but you can delete it with thinner! you have to cross a gap but you can make a platform with paint! rubble blocks your way but you can make it fall below by deleting the platform they stand on with thinner and then make it appear again with paint! you get the idea...

you get tutorialed by a little gremlin named gus (apparently related to this book) and he's pretty much what tvtropes calls an exposition fairy and oh boy it takes quite a while for him to shut up... i don't think i'm exagerating by saying he told me that waggling makes me spin at least in 4 different occasion, luckily he settles down after the first tutorialish level

the problem i have with the game is that... well for being a disney related game they sure fumbled the first bit,the only thing you get to see for the first part are pipe's,sluggage and cogs,it doesn't feel like "ruined disney world" it feels like "sewer level" actualy a fucked up sewer level because even then you get to see some theme park attraction, then you climb a mini japanese pagoda (because apparently it's the asia part) and near the end you climb a mini eifell tower (because it's the europe part) the music also sounds very sewerish

mmm... what else, hidden around the game there are pins, these are divided into bronze, silver and gold... i'm not sure what they do,so far they had no use, some of them are gotten trough doing some side-quest (for example when you reach the theme park bit,you can repair the attraction and doing so reward you with a gold pin) and other are just hidden in the level, breaking stuff around also gives you money which you can use to buy stuff

there also seems to be a morality system tough i don't really understand the reasoning behind it other than "I AM WARREN SPECTOR,I SHALL HAVE A MORAL SYSTEM!" for example on the first level, there is a catapult which holds a captive gremlin and a chest, you can decide to save the gremlin and leave the chest alone or open the chest and ignore the gremlin, machine can be repaired trough the use of paint or broken trough the use of thinner, the first boss of the game can be befriended trough the use of paint or killed trough the use of thinner and at a certain point you can skip a fetch quest by being a jerk (i did this unintentionally tough this came after a loooooooooooooong series of incredibly boring fetch quest so can't say i feel particulary sorry about it)

the point is that what you do doesn't seems to have any sort of impact (well befriending the boss gave me a paint powerup instead of a thinner powerup but that's about it) so other than a surprise ending where mickey mouse ends up murdering everybody because he broke down a machine i don't see what's the point

so far i haven't said anything good about the game but well there is some stuff i like about it,first of all... the cutscene are drawed like a cartoon and are really well done tough sadly there is no voice acting (mickey mouse speak in mickey mousish sounds...) plus i really like the plot about "sad forgotten disney character" in fact if you like disney you should give them a watch on youtube if someone ever decide to put them up

the second thing i do like a lot is that as you transiction between the 3D levels, you enter inside projector and play really shorts 2D level based on a mickey mouse cartoon, these level are awesome and i'm not sure why they are so short (we are talking 2 minute affairs at best) when the 3D part of the game is so damn happy to drag around forever and ever, cartoon used so far include

the last 3D level i played improved a little
spoiler (click to show/hide)
it was a mountain with mickey mouse related junk scattered all around
[close]
but the music still sucked a bit :-\

mmm... what else, what else... the game is ultra easy, mickey mouse takes 5 hits before biting the dust, health powerup are everywhere and dying just means starting from the last room you entered

the plot also involve HEARTSSSSSSSS so i can't wait for the tears of the kingdom hearts hater who wanted a matooooooooooooooor disney game :smug

i seems to have missed quite a lot of sidequests but i can still buy the reward in the shops.... if they had the insight to still let me get the reward, why they couldn't just let me repeat level and do sidequest at my own will?

also it seems that more often than not, when you are given the choice between playing nice and being a jerk the jerk way just solve what you need to do way much quicker and with lot less tedium... it's really suspicious

lastly
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the next level i played was just a generic futuristic looking place, again i'm not sure why the actual disney cartoon get used for 2 minute level while the rest of the game takes place in lame-o-landia

the second boss was a tron-ized version of pete,he throwed a tron disk and you had to spin to send it back to him... totaly different from the battle that a certain plumber had against a certain giant fire coconut spitting octopus!

seems the next boss is going to be a robo version of captain hook, that actualy sounds cool for once, tough i'm not sure why they picked him... i means the guy is a regular to KH so he's not really obscure...

oh and i got another classic 2D

this gamespot video shows one of the many cutscene and one of the 2D levels if you want to get an idea about what i consider good.....

meanwhile you can see here the incredible dullness of the 3D part (and also the first 2D level starting from minute 11 to minute 13 :-\) i think the biggest problem i have with the game is that everybody seems so damn happy to send you on a fetch quest "FIND THE 4 MACHINE'S,PAINT THE 30 PLANTS,FIND THE 3 HIDDEN BUNNIES"

anyway i got some extra 2D shorts these were

spoiler (click to show/hide)

game is also giving me some extra power,i can summon a tv to distract enemies and a watch to slow time but i haven't got much use out of them....

The game is really boring so far and the controls are so bad. The aiming doesn't always work well, and shaking the wiimote for the spin attack sucks. It was much more fluid in SMG/2
And don't get me started on the camera. Worst camera this gen.
The 2D segments can get frustrating because of the shitty controls.

What a dud.

edit: magus or anyone who's completed it. is the whole game completely linear stage after stage like the first couple of hours? always got the impression there would be more of a proper world feel to this and you'd jump into themed level zones from a hub and crap. only played the first boat ride levels and gnome crap. maybe two hours or something

after the first level you reach a hub world with several quest (that will disappear if you don't do them as soon as possible)

that hub world has only the entrance to the next level, you never get to pick, you have to do every sidequest related to that level before finishing it because you can't return to level (well you can return to the first bit of a level which usualy act as a mini-hub but that's about it) so if you don't do them on your first trip they are lost

after finishing a level you return to the hub world where you can get a new set of sidequest and that's about it...

i wouldn't lose a lot of sleep about the sidequest,a lot of them are incredibly tedious fetch quest or worse, scavenger hunt and the rewards are crap! it's just better to ignore them

I think Warren got too caught up in trying to provide fanservice instead of building a good game first. Its really like the difference between Smash Brothers and Kingdom Hearts. The gameplay of Smash Brothers was in development long before they decided to use Nintendo characters to help it sell, and it turned out to be highly addictive and fun.  Kingdom Hearts, on the other hand, was concerned with shoehorning final fantasy into disney and vice versa. Then they put a mediocre rpg/platformer/hackandslash on top of all that and it was a terrible game.

I don't think Warren Spector knows how to manage a project anymore. Between this and the last Deus Ex, that's two turkeys in a row. He's a great speaker. And intellectually a smart guy, but his days of creating the next big thing seem to be over. He struggles to make competent games now.

Wtf, Kingdom Hearts is an amazing game. Epic Mickey can't touch KH's awesomeness.

Epic Mickey's failure means no more Disney on the Wii. This automatically means that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released for the HD consoles.
