I like that she's setup as this glory seeking preened girl that gets reality smacked into her

Don't know if it was the same for the other tomb raider games.  All I remember from those stories was like thor's hammer and angels and dinosaurs and clones...

well she was already established as a hardened adventurer at the start of the first game. In the instructional manual it explained that her parents died when she was young and she inherited a fortune (hence the Croft Manor training stage), but her thirst for adventure got her set-up in the situation we saw from this CG trailer. iirc this new adventure was hinted at back in the original TR manual.

It's hard to really gather anything from that demo which is mainly just a cinematic opening but I'm optimistic about this one.

Quote
“When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about,” said Gallagher in a message to the community. “The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.

“Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.”

If they can combine Uncharted scripted shit with some actual open gameplay and danger of exploration and puzzles we got a winner.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with some scripted scenes here and there, as long as the rest of the gameplay isn't solely comprised of shooting a thousand bullet-sponge bad guys in the face over and over. Puzzles, exploration, platforming, as long as those things are there this game's got a shot at being really, really good.

Obviously the cinematic stuff is what they're going to show off the most in that trailer.

The leaked video from last E3 showed more old Tomb Raider gameplay where you're exploring a large area, doing some platforming, and no one's trying to rape you.  Platforming looked more "realistic" than Legends-Anniversary-Underworld Tomb Raiders, more like Uncharted.

I enjoyed some of the previous games in the series, but it's not a series that I have any kind of real attachment to. I'd probably have this preordered already, but missing the mark so badly with Aliens: Colonial Marines has left me gun-shy and so I'll wait to see what the reviews/forum impressions say. None of the preorder stuff really sounds all that amazing anyway.

Quote
Tomb Raider has received its first review, courtesy of this month’s issue of GamesMaster.

Crystal Dynamics’ latest earned a 90% score. The magazine had high praise for Tomb Raider’s visuals – the title was given a 95% rating in the category.

Players can look forward to 10-15 hours for the main story, though GamesMaster notes that it’ll take 20 to fully explore the island.

The magazine also enjoyed the “vivid” hubs and final third of the game “with its spectacular bombast”. GamesMaster wished Tomb Raider included more side tombs, but the ones present in the game are a joy to discover. For those wondering: there aren’t many quick time events.

GamesMaster sums up:

“Sitting back exhausted we were left with just one question dribbling forth from our gaping jaws. How on earth are they going to top this in the sequel? Because of one thing there can be no doubt. Lara is back.”

Look out for a whole slew of Tomb Raider reviews early next week. Square Enix will be ending the game’s embargo on Monday – over a week before the game launches.

Thanks to joclo for the tip.

if they don't release a demo, the reviews at least got me to pirate-demo it.  i will dl and have a look!

I realize this is a bonafide reboot, but seriously, the past 3 or 4 TR games have had the buzz of "Lara's back!  The redesign gives her more personality, she's not just a sex symbol anymore."

Angel of Darkness was suuuuper bad, lol. The controls ruined that game completely.

The following trilogy (Legend -> Anniversary -> Underworld) was much much better.

That's the point where Crystal Dynamics took over control of the series from Core Designs.

Review stuff:

Quote from: The Escapist
This is the Tomb Raider you've wanted for years. It needs a few more puzzles, but that's a small gripe when cast against such a marvelous adventure. 5/5

Quote from: Game Informer
The lackluster multiplayer is absolutely no reason to avoid what is otherwise one of the best action adventures I’ve ever played. Crystal Dynamics has nailed a pitch-perfect new vision for one of gaming’s most recognizable characters, and revitalizes her for what I hope will be many more installments. Whether or not you’ve embraced the previous games that went by this moniker, this is the time to take another look at Lara Croft. 9.25/10

Quote from: IGN
Tomb Raider is well-written, sympathetic, exciting, beautiful and just incredibly well-made. The single-player rarely makes a mis-step, and though Lara's quick transformation into a hardened killer seems at odds with the narrative at first, the game quickly moves past it. It is a superb action game that brings a new emotional dimension to one of gaming's most enduring icons, and repositions her alongside Nathan Drake at the top of gaming's action-hero hierarchy. 9.1/10

Quote from: GameTrailers
The road to the triple-A summit hasn’t been reached in a single game, but there’s hope that Lara could reach greater heights in the inevitable sequel. 8.5/10

Quote from: EGM
Tomb Raider presents a conflict between what I expected and what I received, so to some degree, it’s hard not to be disappointed. However, even with its missteps and missed opportunities, the effort Crystal Dynamics presents here is a respectable first step in giving the Tomb Raider franchise a proper–and much-needed—reboot. 8/10

Quote from: Gamespot
But no matter; the single-player campaign here is the main attraction, and it is excellent. It doesn't try to rewrite the book on third-person action adventure games. But with its excellent controls, engaging heroine, thrilling combat, and fascinating setting, it doesn't need to. Lara may be covering some previously charted territory here, but Tomb Raider is so well-crafted, you won't mind at all. 8.5/10

Quote from: Destructoid
Tomb Raider could so easily have gone wrong, and its opening gambit looks like it's heading down a most erroneous path. It starts off with some ambushing QTEs and absolutely pummels Lara Croft into the dirt to such a degree, you'd almost suspect the developers were getting off on it. This first impression is an awkward obfuscation, however, one that soon erodes to reveal a savvy, thoughtful, and above all, immensely enjoyable game. In fact, I'm happy to go on record as saying this is the best Tomb Raider game I've played. Tightly produced, competent in both its puzzling and its combat, this is one reboot that manages to be unequivocally superior to its predecessors. 8.5/10

Quote from: OXM
But it’s all deftly anchored by a perceptive, nuanced narrative that helps fashion Croft into a convincing heroine who can weather extraordinary circumstances, while remaining convincingly human throughout. These quieter moments make what’s already a stunning ride even more worthwhile. 8.5/10
