Forget everything you know about Lara Croft. Which may be difficult as the franchise was rebooted in 2006, had a well-received new game in 2008, and even a great download-only spinoff just a few weeks ago...anyway, forget it.

This is not your father's Lara Croft!

She's edgy and hip! She shops at American Apparel and checks in on FourSquare. She's 21 and looking for fun. But instead, she finds ... only death!

- Lara is 21 in this game.
- It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.
- They're doing performance capturing with this game.
- There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head.
- CD won't talk specifics on weapons but concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol
- The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.
- "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guide."
- "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes. As the game unfolds, Lara will scavenge new tools and gear that augment her abilities. Lara's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or scarce supplies. With the right skills and gear, however, the island is Lara's for the taking.
- There are base camps in the game. Here you can combine items to create something new and access a skill system to upgrade Lara's abilities. You'll also be able to use base camps to fast travel to different locations to minimize backtracking.
- You'll need to gather food and water in order to survive.
- There are humans in the game, including some of the crew members from the shipwreck off the coast of the island.

$10 on "no HUD for a more immersive experience." $20 on "meaningful moral choices."

From previous leaks:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103510-Rumor-Tomb-Raider-9-Sets-Lara-Free-on-Japanese-Island

Quote
Tomb Raider 9 would incorporate a sandbox/open world feel could be true after all. The Spy writes that the game will be set on a Japanese island; its only level. However, it'll be large enough so that Lara can make her own way around its puzzles and take multiple paths.

The Spy also says that it'll be a prequel to earlier Tomb Raider games and will explore Croft's origins. She'll be "younger and inexperienced" instead of the seasoned tomb pilferer seen in previous titles.

What killed console games? I think it should be pretty clear at this point that console games committed suicide.

My highlighting of that list was better.  My glass is half full.  Your glass was shattered and used to give a pregnant woman a caesarean section just punt a baby into a volcano.

Sounds like it's going to be open in the same way that Metroid, Castlevania, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc etc. games are 'open'.

I'm stoked for this game. Who gives a shit if they're rebooting it? If the game itself is good, reboot it 10,000 times. This isn't a TV show, nerds, it's video games.

I'm really stoked about this.  All the TR games since the reboot by Crystal Dynamics have been great (not counting underworld which I still can't play due to the spazzy camera in the first level).  So a new TR by these guys in lovely retail-game environments combined with the horror aspect of SILENT HILL my favorite spooky franchise and the gameplay of RE4 meets TR platforming/puzzles/exploration with JUST CAUSE freedom of full island to explore sounds like the best thing ever.

Might be let down when real footage comes out, but I'm hoping it lives up to my imagination.

All the dirt and grime plus that haircut make Lara look like a dude on the Game Informer cover.

Not sure how much I'm feeling the whole open-ended island design, though if it's set up like Arkham Asylum that could be good. I just hope they don't add a ton of needless combat to it, I just want puzzles and platforming and pretty environments. I'd be more than happy if it was set up like Underworld with a much better camera and more refined combat.

what?

TR games are some of the nicest looking games out there.  Guardian of Light is probably the best looking downloadable game you'll see this gen.  Legend had some really impressive stuff for its time on the X360 version.  Anniversary was silky smooth 60fps and looked great.  And Underworld looked fairly nice too.

Graphics have always been TR's strong point since the first game :P

I agree about the combat though.  It's pretty sucky in all of them except Guardian of Light.  The platforming/puzzles are why people play the games.

Koshiba Kroft: Electric Dudebrogaloo

- Koshiba is 21 in this game.
- It's not only a reboot of the poster but a reboot of the entire NeoGAF post-your-pic thread. As a result there will be no "real tits" on Koshiba
- Koshiba's performance of the year
- There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged stalker raping Koshiba and putting her to sleep when he finishes. Another includes Koshiba slipping on the dance floor and snapping her neck.
- "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Phoenix Dark, the studio head at Chubby Dynamics. "There was an illusion of real beauty because of streaming and loading that would pop you out, but this is absolutely fake. Anything that you see is probably fake and much uglier in person, without a guide."
- "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Koshiba emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a street hooker turning tricks for money," says experienced transsexual, Himumu. As the game unfolds, Koshiba will scavenge bits of dignity and empty attention-whoring that augment her abilities. Koshiba's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or a strict no-penis policy. With the right skills and gear, the island is Koshiba's for the taking.
- You'll need to gather trolls and nubs in order to survive.
- There are humans in the game, including some of the GAF members that fell for Koshiba's pity party.
