Looks hot but I wonder how many characters with such detail could they simultaneously put on screen?

Good question. I'd imagine the ship setting answers that question though. Narrow corridors/rooms with a handful of stuff on screen

Capcom let it slip that if the 3D effect is turned off then the graphics quality is higher for their Resident Evil game (not sure if both are applicable).

so yeah, those could be real shots.

Mercenaries is the only product that fits the platform. Why anyone thinks these console efforts like Revelations and Snake Eater on a handheld are good sense is beyond me.

The future of handhelds is the apple model anyway, I don't want to see Nintendo crash and burn trying to make the 3ds pander to console style development.

I just think the priorities for the 3ds are severely out of whack.  What made the ds successful was NOT shoehorning console style games onto the platform.  That's why the psp is in the irrigation ditch of irrelevancy now.  It just so happens that I also see no value in playing console oriented games on a handheld device, and would rather have pick-up-play-put-down affairs.

edit: Which is why Mercenaries 'fits'. Hopefully its priced accordingly.

i think the psp is in the ditch because everyone just stole the games

in addition to full console-style games, i am sure that you will have plenty of bite sized downloadable games to play, all of which will be way overpriced in comparison to iphone games

DS is just as easy to pirate though.  And I don't mind spending a few more buck to play games with reliable input methods. I tried a few dual stick/virtual button apps for my Itouch and it was always terrible.

the reason why console style games were not "shoehorned" onto the DS was it's piss poor hardware, duh. Note that a lot of DS games are console style games, RPGs and 2d platformers, console style games FROM 1994 HAHAHA SHAME SHITHEAD

The only mistake the PSP made was its price and the janky proprietary media that Sony shoved in your face. Even today, PSP is way too expensive, both hardware and software.

This is a mistake the 3DS looks to be repeating, but with gusto.

what the fuck are you talking about? ds does not have a pick up and play mode. it is lacking in action and platforming. psp has an emphasis on action, puzzle, platformer, and strategy games which ARE pick up and play. psp's "failure" is not due to the games that are made for it, but the fact nobody BUYS the games.

If you put the same kind of psp support on a system where people WILL buy the games, what do you think the result will be?

In any case, 3ds has showcased multiple pick up and play gaming, "hardcore" gaming and casual gaming ALREADY. Beyond that, ds? A pick up and play system?

This isn't about controls. Its about what's appropriate for the platform. There's a lot of folks in denial cus I guess they like their PSPs enough, but the 'console games on the go' philosophy is what ultimately did the psp in.  Consumers want quick distractions with low barrier to entry i.e. the evergreen DS titles that began with Brain Training and is now at Tomodachi Collection- or the bulk of ios games.  Which makes sense when you consider what handheld gaming is practical for, killing time during downtime.  If Nintendo isn't careful to balance their output to serve the vapid app purchaser in addition to the nerd contingent, I could see 3ds sales tapering off. ESPECIALLY if Apple introduces an Iphone with a 3d display. Glassless 3d is not proprietary, if I'm not mistaken cell phones in japan already use it.

edit: I disagree Himuro, but I'm pretty sure I've dug a lot deeper into the DS catalouge than most people have. Meteos doesn't get enough love, for instance.  :'(

You are ignoring the fact that Nintendo ALREADY HAS A Nintendo Dogs + CATS IN DEVLEOPMENT.

By concentrating on both markets, and having the hardware power to do so they automatically kill ANY reason for the psp 2 to exist -- and I say this as someone who considers psp his favorite handheld system -- by stealing developer support that otherwise would have worked on psp (due to, once again, power) while shelling out casual games for twenty year old women and little girls.

Nintendo is so, very very obviously, trying to capture both markets.

If they have an app store with cheapo games they'll be able to fight both competitors at the same time.

edit: well, people like to say PSP IS FOR CONSOLE GAMES HYUCK HYUCK PS2 IN POCKET while ignoring Lumines, Practical Quotient 2, Crush or Gurumin. psp is the better handheld system, featuring more handheld appropriate games.

Emcee I don't think you understand that competing with iOS is impossible for gaming-only portable platforms. Apple won that handheld war, they beat Nintendo at their own game. The only future left for handheld gaming is doing full, console-style games.

PSP is the best system this gen for me. It has the perfect mix of bite sized strategy, puzzle, platformer, and action gaming and it has slowly stolen just about ALL of ds' rpg support making it the true rpg king of this generation.

I love both systems, but it's clearly the 16 bit wars all over again:

SNES - emphasis on "immersion", rpgs, storytelling, epicness, realism.
Genesis - emphasis on pick up and play, action gaming, platformers, lacking in rpg count.

SNES = ds (adventure games, rpgs, occasional casual game)
Genesis = psp (puzzle, platformer, action, strategy games, though it has the rpg output that ds lacks making it even more well-rounded)

As someone who was clearly in the Genesis camp, psp wins.

That makes no sense whatsoever.  Handheld gaming has been redefined, you don't ignore that and go in the other direction hoping to succeed. If there is anything that this gen has taught us, you must adapt to survive. Instead many publishers have stubbornly stuck to the blockbuster model. Money down the drain, studios gutted, tears cried.  Meanwhile, Popcap, Nintendo, Valve, Apple laughing all the way to bank.  Activision lucked out that Infinity Ward found a recipe for digital crack.

You are missing the point though: handheld gaming really is the future. I'm pretty sure in ten years time, you will be able to take your system anywhere, play it on the bus, broadcast it on your tv when you get home, and continue game.

idevices have shown that people are fine without discs for their handheld stuff, including games.

I think it's pretty clear Nintendo realizes this as well. When the handhelds get to look like the game in the first post, what reason is there to own a console that you can't take anywhere? It becomes an obsolete piece of tech.

Gesture based motion controls justify living room gaming enough and could not be replicated on a handheld. Nintendo's not going to abandon that assuming they can keep consumers interested in the long run.

1.  why would you want to

2.  hook it to your tv and connect the waggle wand via bluetooth

as for other motion control, you do realize there is a gyroscope in the 3ds and they are going to use it in games

i mean, you have read about the tech features in this system you are arguing about, haven't you

Not really. Maybe you all don't get the appeal, but motion controls can be good, but thats no the case when the thing your swinging/tilting/whatever is the same thing with your screen on it. Its one of the main reasons why Super Monkey Ball for the iphone is fucking unplayable.

Yes I have. Which is why I phrased it as 'gesture based motion controls'. Even tilt games are hit or miss on the iphone though.  The fact of the matter is, and ultimately my point, is that in no way is a handheld game system going to effectively be a catchall solution.  There will be needs for living room oriented consoles and a market to support them.
