I'm neutral on FF13. I like some parts and I find other parts boring. It's such a random mish mash of quality and pacing and the overall product is so average.

If I'm correct on FFXIII-2, it should kick 13's ass and be the game that 13 should have been.

The only reason I'm hard on FF13 is because it wasn't great or even awful. If it were awful, I'd just forget about it. But it wasn't. It was just mediocre, and a mediocre rpg is worse than an awful rpg, because mediocrity screams potential -- and in this case, wasted potential. I just couldn't believe that this game had been in the oven for what, 4-5 years? It is so devoid of everything I desire from rpgs (exploration, customization, dungeon design, getting absorbed in a fictional world, characters, battle systems, content, side quests, motivation, rewards) that I can't help but be hard on it.

I have never seen an rpg go so out of its way to rid itself of everything that makes the genre so fantastic. If you are capable of playing an rpg at its most barebones, which is only battling -- with zero cohesive dungeon design or anything like a real dungeon crawler -- and the "occasional" cutscene every 30 minutes, that's fine. But I just can't get into a game like that.

Sazh is widely considered the only good character in the game because he is the voice of reason and down to Earth, but even he turns into a laundry list of motivational speeches once you get to chapter 10/11.

Oh man, yesterday I wasted around one hour to beat one normal encounter.
I use Lighting, Fang and Hope as always. MED-SEN-MED when things are rough, RAV-COM-RAV to deal massive damage.

I simply could not win this fight.

Well there's your problem...
Seriously though you should have Vanille instead of Hope and she should be using an upgraded Belladonna Wand. Debuffs/Poisin make encounters much easier.

LOOOOOLLLLLLLL  :lol Read a guide on weapon upgrades bro, you're kinda right, but also completely not right as well. You should def be upgrading your weapons at least somewhat, and every weapon can be the ultimate weapon. You'll see what I mean once you understand the weapon upgrade process, some weapons ultimate weapons are better than others for sure, and some suit different playstyles, i.e. whether you play lightning as Rav mainly or Com

Heh...wait 'til you find out that your "Ultimate" weapons are actually UPGRADED versions of what you're probably carrying at the moment. There's some 'hardcore' irony  :P

You're hobbling yourself if you don't upgrade your stuff. That includes both weapons and accessories

There are some key strategies for getting the most out of you upgrade materials too so your hoarding could still be a boon for you, it boils down to beast materials like horns and hides and stuff raise the upgrade multiplier, so you get that to 3x then you burn some mechanical materials to pump up your weapons exp. iirc Sturdy Bones are boss, sell your beast materials that aren't Sturdy Bones and buy more Sturdy Bones, same goes with mechanical components, but theres a few that are most efficient depending on the level and amount of experience you want to put into your weapons. There's even some web apps you can use to help you maximise your output!

People suggest Vanille more? Lightning, Fang, Hope was pretty much considered the best team when it came out. What changed?

Hope has all the debuffs that are useful at that point.

FF13-2 is supposed to come out this year.

Hope has the worst HP total of any character. You complain about Vanille's health and ignore the fact that Hope's is lower? The reason Vanille>Hope is because she is head and shoulders above anyone else as SAB. Equip the Malboro Wand and be done with it. Her healing is as good as Hope's and her Strength is consistently higher which makes her a better damage dealer when your using her as RAV or COM. You can argue that Hope can "get the job done" as SAB but why would you drag out fights unnecessarily waiting for his stuff to stick (if it ever does, end game stuff can make even Vanille struggle a bit sometimes with debuffs)? Why not use Snow as MED since he can "get the job done" if you orchestrate paradigms to SEN/SEN/MED while he works HPs back up? There's zero reason to use Hope over Vanille from a technical standpoint. Zero. Ultimately the game isn't so challenging that there's no leeway about what party you use (I beat it on my first playthrough with Light/Sazh/Vanille almost exclusively excepting some of the Hunts) but if you're going to recommend "best" use then really Vanille is better than Hope

before unlocking secondary roles (that's it when everybody can be everything) sticking with lightining-fang-vanille means having no synergist and you don't want a team without synergist

so yeah,lightining-hope-fang is the beast team for the biggest chunk of the game,it's just the only party that lets you do everything

He gets haste, but he's worthless in all of his other roles. Hope gets magic, healing, and the support class.

Lightning/fang/hope has the best synergy for 95% of the game. And then Fang/Lightning/Hope is best when everyone is maxed out.

But since I barely remember anything about the game, even after completing it 100%, I have nothing else to add.

Sazh has good Chain abilities that make him a far better RAV than Hope. Recap: Sazh is a better SYN and better RAV. Hope is better MED than Sazh but Vanille can cover that role without breaking a sweat. Hope=superfluous

Hope has the least HPs (by a wide margin), the least Strength, and isn't a clear winner in "best of Role" for anything. You can claim his "utility" trumps those weaknesses but well...that's all it is to me, a claim. Let's agree to disagree

Also, none of them have build up. They are like,"kill this monster" whereas in FF12 it's usually revolved around a story or you have to complete specific tasks in order to fight it.

I don't see how what you described is even a bad thing if you remotely like rpgs. I'm starting to wonder what rpgs you even like and why you like them. Because you complain when games are "too easy" and "mindless" when you go out of your own way to grind and cheat (FF5 for instance) but also complain when the game expects you to use every resource available (FF12, SMT games).

MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

and when did i ever say anything bad about SMT?

The game didn't cheat you, the game forces you to change strategies. Even FF13 requires you to do so in the later marks. Long guis have like protect, shell, all that shit already casted on them don't they? Both FF12 and FF13 are games of debuff and buffing. One of the best things about them.

True enough. Upgrade system is even pretty good, now that I understand it :-[ Just that you need the Prima guide to "get it".

The upgrade system requires the biggest amount of grinding imaginable for small parts. How the hell is it "pretty good"? Even people I know who like FF13 think the upgrade system is shit. This is the first time I've seen anyone reference the upgrade system as good.
