I just played through this demo again and I can honestly say I haven't been this excited for a game since Gears of War. So ready. So, so ready.

What? I'm loving this game so far and everyone else I know who is playing it thinks it'll be a serious contender for GotY. I'm really happy with this game and its sales performance, because it did something different successfully. I think Japanese developers will look at this (at least Atlus will) and be more willing to do creative, new ideas. Even if this was really just a well-executed idea to get Atlus devs up to speed on next-gen hardware for the next Persona.

This, I can only hope you're right about. But sadly I believe the reality is nothing more than, as you said, a way to get Atlus devs familiarized with next-gen tech. I can see Japanese devs moving in this direction if Catherine becomes a smash hit, but a middling success cannot effect the winds of change.

EDIT: However, those PS3 numbers are pretty nice

It looks like Atlus is already working on a patch to make the game easier. Normally I'd be against this, but fubarduck is going on about how the game is horribly designed, so maybe not.

That having been said, the game design of Catherine is absolutely horrible.

You get only 5 continues -- for the whole game. Once you run out, you have to load from a save file.

What this means is that for a puzzle that takes 50 times to complete (and it will take you that many times for some of them), you would have to rewatch the same 2-3 minute cutscenes 49 times.

So, if you use several of your continues in the beginning stages (which you will) and then save with only one or two continues, you will literally spend more time watching the same cutscene over and over than playing the game.

That's the complaint about the game in Japan. Not that it's too hard, but that "5 continues" is completely arbitrary and forces you to unnecessarily waste hours of your life.

Ways this mechanic could be forgivable:

- Your 5 continues could be refreshed for each new level (they aren't)
- You could load a save file that puts you right at the beginning of the puzzle (you can't)
- You could just have infinite continues

I'm curious as to what Atlus intends to do with the patch. I don't want the game to be less difficult at all; the difficulty is just fine as-is. I simply want to actually play the game instead of watching the same cutscene for 2 hours in exchange for 5 minutes of gameplay.

That sounds awful. Why not allow the player to save AFTER the cutscenes and load screens, right before beginning a new puzzle? They did shit like this in their RPGs too, but I can see it being infinitely more annoying in a fast, skill-based, and apparently challenging game like Catherine. distinguished mentally-challenged.

Sounds pretty legit to me. One of my most frustrating peevs is unskippable cutscenes (no mention of it in that post). I dont even mind having to replay all over, but if you cant skip scenes I'll go Hulk.

In Persona 3 (and I guess 4), if you got killed by a boss after one of the story scenes just played out, you had to sit through allllllllll that crap again if you wanted to retry. Sounds like they're doing the same thing here because they don't know any better.

This. The cutscenes are skippable, right? Then I don't really see a problem. I hope this new patch doesn't affect the harder difficulties.
